Deftones at Wembley Arena, London 19/09/03
One word. Wow. This was my first time seeing Deftones, and it made them even
more my favourite band than before. They were supported by A Perfect Circle,
who I also love, and they were gr8 too, but not as good as The Greatest Band
In The World. Their set was about 45 mins long, and Deftones' was about 1
and a half hours. What an amazing set too.
Here is the set list, altho I cant remember the order after the first 4
songs....
Minerva
Bloody Cape
My Own Summer (wow)
Digital Bath
Be Quiet And Drive
Bored
Feiticeira
Hexagram
Around The Fur
Battle-Axe
Headup(oh my god!)
Mascara
Lifter(?)
Lotion
7 Words (oh my God!!!!)
Engine No 9 (oh my God!!!!!!!!!!!)
Encore: Change (amazing)
Covers: Clint Eastwood, Say It Aint So
Deftones played so aggressively last night. Chi's bass was soooo loud and
deep that it went right through me and everyone, especially on Battle-Axe,
Lotion and Engine No 9. Chino was just as cool as I imagined, and really
funny. A couple of times he had a little go at Abe for sounding like Dr
Dre's beats when he was telling a story. He got pissed off once at the
couple of dicks who were crowd surfing at the beginning, because he didnt
want anyone to get hurt. Oh yeah, he downed a big glass of weird punch stuff
halfway through, to cheers from the crowd.
Stef was puffing away on his blunts between songs. Chi was thrashing and
jumping around like a guy possessed, and Frank was chillin, headbanging to
some songs. Abe was drumming insanely. I was so overwhelmed at the whole
thing, seeing as it was my first time seeing them and I was right at the
front. It was amazing. The crowd got into it so much, we were all singing
along as loud as we could, and especially on BQAD, my favourite song.
The mosh pit got so intense for Engine No 9, 7 Words and My Own Summer it
was unreal. At the end, Chino chucked his guitar into the crowd, and
everyone fought over it. I got to touch it at least. There was just so much
happening at the gig I cant fit it all in here. What an amazing night.
DEFTONES F**KING RULE!!!! I'm definitely going to see them again. I just
hope my photos come out ok. LONG LIVE DEFTONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was the 2nd time i saw Deftones. I saw them back at Brixton in June and the
Performance was easily matched. A Perfect Circle and The Revoloution Smile were the
support acts. Havnt herd anything by The Revolution Smile so i cant say if they were
any good or not. They seemed to put on a good act.
A Perfect Circled played well with Maynard in a box which had a bright light shone apon.
All the crowd could see was his shadow (Only for the first song). He played with his
back/side to the crowd for the rest of the act.
Deftones played well. I was a bit apprehensive after reading a review of them at the
Nottingham gig where they olny played six songs.
The show opened up well with a long intro to 'Minerva' and the show ended with 'Change'
(in the house of flies). There were a few disapointments. The crowd chanted for Maynard
to come onto the stage and sing Passenger but nothing happened. Also Knife Party and
Nosebleed didnt appear in the set list.
I dont know the order of play but i know it started with 'Minerva' and ended with 'Change
(in the house of files)

wasn't too impressed tonight for some reason. firstly, i only had seated
tickets because i hadn't known if i would be around for this gig or not, but
i was near the front so i still had a good view. then, thanks to theawful
organisation at wembley, i managed to miss the support band once again - i
only got in at about 10 past 8 (doors opened at half 7) and revolution smile
had already played, which was a shame because i had wanted to hear them. i
did however manage to catch a perfect circle, who were quite simply
fantastic - you wouldn't know that james iha has only been in the band for a
month or so, judging by the tightness of their set - and maynards voice! it
has to be heard to be believed, especially when he gives out that scream at
the end of "judith".
against a red curtain, we see two guitar-holding silhouettes, which turn out
to be steph and chino on a riser jamming out some team sleep-esque chords
before the rest of the band come on - abe on the same riser as stef but on
the other side of the stage, chino and chi down front, frank virtually
hidden at the side. they start with "minerva", the sound is abysmal and
chino's voice is wrecked. luckily though, by next song "bloody cape" the
problems seemed to have ironed themselves out, although compared to apc's
sound the deftones were muddy. chino was his usual self - although it seemed
that he was talking even more shit than usual - at one point he went into a
big arnie impression skit that was kinda silly.
setlist: (from memory)
minerva
bloody cape
bqad
my own summer
bored/clint eastwood
feiticeira
digital bath
around the fur
headup
mascara
birthmark
hexagram
battle-ax
7 words/tired of sex
engine no.9

my main gripe, apart from the sound, was the lack of surprises in the
setlist. i could have told you the songs they were gonna play in my sleep -
the lack of rare tracks - especially at such a special gig, as this was
deftones' biggest uk headlining song - was in my view unforgivable.
"teething", "knife prty", even "lotion" - tracks lilke this were conspicous
by their absence, while the band's reluctance to play a great deal of new
material, even now, annoyed. "when girls telephone boys" or "good morning
beautiful" would have fitted right in to the set they played, and a bigger
role for frank could well have helped. ulitmately thought, the biggest
disappointment was that the band didnt take advantage of having maynard
around, and attempt "passenger". chino hinted that they might play it
halfway through the set, so to leave the crowd wanting when it would have
been easy to bring him out (especially when they managed to get yet another
fan to try and scream through headup - i've seen this twice now and it hasnt
worked) was not a good choice on the bands part.
no-one could accuse the band of not having their hearts in it - "hexagram"
in particular was stunning, far better than at brixton back in may - but by
sticking to virtually the same setlist as they played on their list visit
before the summer, it's hard not to question why i spent 20 quid on a
ticket.

hi ya! i was at the wembley arena concert on the 19th of september and it rocked!
the lights dimmed down and they played the opening chords to MINERVA, the place
went mad! they played my own summer (which was stopped half way through because
someone fell over in the pit and chino said he wouldnt continue if the injured person
wasnt picked up) minerva, be quiet and drive, hexagram, bloody cape, engine number #9,
7 words, bored, change, around the fur, and i think there was some others but i
really cant remember...overall the concert was excellent! oh and after they played
change, which was the last song chino passed his guitar into the crowd and one
lucky dude got to keep it!
