DEFTONES @ "Arrow Hall" Toronto, ONT - Canada 27 Nov 2003 © www.deftonesworld.com First of all, I don't think that i have ever been so moved or blown away by a performance that a group of people has put on for me (and about 6000 other people). The show that i saw at the Arrow Hall in T.O., November 27th, 2003, was too much for the english language to describe. This was my first deftones concert and i really didn't know what to expect of them from a live perspective. I went there to see my two favorite bands at the time, Thrice and Thursday. Thrice played first and played an amazing set. I almost died during this set. The crowd was being retarded and were moving back and forth, side to side, over and over again, and there was no where to put your feet so you couldn't step anywhere to gain balance. Then this person grabbed me and pulled me to the ground with them and as i was laying on the ground with like 5 people standing on my back, I thought i was going die and i thoguht that at the end of the night when everyone would be clearing out of the huge venue, i would be laying there dead. But for some reason my friend saw me laying there in a fucking haystack of people and pulled me up. I thought i broke both of my legs. But once i got over the shock, we went back in the pit for some more. After that death set of glory, Thursday came on. Thursday is astonishing. They make music that boggles my mind. I found myself trying to get my aggression out on the crowd during their performance. I think i was just mad at them as a whole for almost killing me. After Thursday, my friends and i were almost going to leave, but two friends and i wanted to see the deftones play, That was the greatest idea i have ever had. So my two friends and i made it up pretty close, but far enough away so we could just enjoy it and not have to worry about our lives. It began with thte lights going out and then all of a sudden everything was red. There was only red in the room with the silhouettes of the band members. Then all you could hear was the chords that begin Minerva. I can honestly say that at this point the anticipation of what was going to happen next was making me shake. I had sort of a perma-smile on my face all night. From start to finish. From Minerva to the fucking amazing cover of Weezer's, Say it ain't so. I can remember that during this set, my friends and i just kept looking at eachother in awe. We were wondering how Chino could be so powerful with his built-in instrument, his voice. The notes that he was hitting i didn't even know existed. After the show the three of us felt like we experienced something so breath taking and insane together, and we still have lengthy conversations about it. The mention of that night, or the breath of the deftones' name sends shivers through my body until goosebumps begin to show. I thought it was good when Chino stopped in the middle of Be quiet and drive, i think it was, to tell people that are crowd surfing to be careful of who they are on top of. If my friend hadn't saved me, i might not have ever seen what the deftones bring to the world. This explanation of what happened may seem a little fucked and weird, but i find that there is no other way to describe the musically arousing events of that night. I think that anyone else that was there that night may have similar things to say about it. I can't imagine what it would be like to meet such people, to dig deep in their minds to find out what exactly goes on there so maybe i can someday possess that kind of talent, but it isn't possible. The on;y way i can be close to doing that is to listen. sarah -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What can I really say? The show was fucking awesome. Today is the day after and every muscle in my body is sore. The crowd was so intense at International Center, which is basically just an old revamped airplane hanger. I started my night off in the beer gardens, but rushed to the pit, where I stayed for the whole night. After the first song, Minerva, my mouth was severely dry, and I was drenched in sweat. Chino seemed pretty talkative, he kept asking how the people in the beer gardens were.He stopped the show early on for about 30 seconds to tell body surfers to watch where their feet are kicking. I think Chino and the band were impressed with the crowds energy, because we got 4 fuckin dope encore songs! All in all it was a cool night, definitely the best concert of my life. Korn/ limp bizkit are playing the same venue one day later, and i was hoping to see some guest appearances, but that didn't happen. It's probably just a pipe dream anyway. So here's the set list in no real order, to the best of my drug influenced memory: Minerva Be Quiet And Drive My Own Summer Digital Bath Hexagram MX Elite Nosebleed Mascara Around the Fur Feitceira Bloody Cape The Chauffeur Head Up ---encore--- Bored 7 Words Change Say it Aint So ------------------------------------------------------------------------ No band in my opinion is better to go see live then the Deftones. Last night was the third time I have witnessed the beautiful mayhem that they create, and left feeling so rejuvenated. I wasn't sure if they could top their performance at the ACC three years back, which has still left me shaking in my work boots, but last night blew my mind open. An awesome setlist, much different from what they have played most of this tour, and a general feeling of respect towards the fans, especially those who have been there since day one. Of course when onstage Deftones look like a series of awesome live posters that you could take of a band, but a feeling of arrogance or cockiness that some bands give off is not present. Chino even remarked in the encore that the band thanks those who have been with them since the days of Adrenaline before playing Bored and the closer 7 words. Deftones redeem themselves constantly with me, I have liked each album just a little less since Adrenaline, but must say even the new album blows what most bands are doing out of the water. I was most interested to hear the new material live, because on the album it sounds like the music was crafted to be heard in a live setting. Personal song highlights were Hexagram, Nosebleed and of course 7 words. I must say even though there are a lot of songs I would have loved to have heard of course, this is close to a perfect setlist, encompassing so much material with several pleasant surprises. Anyways thank you Deftones for such an uplifting experience and there is no question that I will see you every time that I possibly can in the future. Thanks for a long setlist, with a lot of surprises, and the respect you show us Canadians. It means a lot. Especially when a band is willing to stop mid song (my own summer) to tell crowd surfers to take it easy and watch out for those underneath them. I feel like barriers were lifted in my head last night that now allow for a new kind of happiness to be felt. Here is the Setlist, from memory, I think I got most of it right, maybe one or two songs out of place though Minerva Be Quiet and Drive My Own Summer Digital Bath Bloody Cape MX Around the Fur Mascara Elite! Needles and Pins Hexagram The Chauffer Nosebleed Head Up Encore Change Feitirceria Bored 7words with Say it Aint So and a bit of Lucky You thanks again- Robby --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Holy Fuckin Shit!.....I don't even know where to begin. This was my first time seeing Deftones live, and it was fuckin unreal!!...First off, the Arrow Hall is a fairly large venue, probably holding 6,000 people. The doors opened at 5:30, and even then, you could feel the anxiety in the crowd. At one point everyone started yelling "Deftones! Deftones!". Around 6:30, Thrice came on, and everyone went fuckin crazy. They sounded amazing. They sort of have a Metallica thing going on, but the lead singer has a better voice. Then Thursday came on, they were fuckin great too. I have their latest album "War all the time", and it's awesome. They sounded amazing live. Then the Deftones walked on, the stage was black, all you could see was their silouettes. I had a spot right in front of Stef. They started with this beautiful intro to Minerva, the crowd was fuckin insane. After Minerva they jumped into BQAD!...it sounded so good live...then My Own Summer started. Like usual, Chino got right into the crowd and started singing. Halfway into the song Chino stopped the music because the crowd was so wild. He's like "You motherfuckers better pay attention to who's underneath you when your crowd surfing!" The fourth song was Digital Bath. I fuckin love this song. I read a review on here by some Deftones fan who said Chino could not hit the high notes in Digital Bath. Well let me tell you this....fear not about Chino's abilities. He can hit the fuckin high notes. It sounded like he was in his prime. Here's the setlist in no particular order after #5. Minerva Be Quiet and Drive My Own Summer Digital Bath Bloody Cape Elite (fuckin crazy) MX Around the Fur Mascara Nosebleed !!!! (awesome live) Needles and Pins!! 7 Words!!!!!! (unreal) Say it Ain't So!!! Hexagram The Chauffeur!! (Chino plays the guitar) Headup ( with singer from Thrice) Change Bored Feiticeira/Swords Chino was in a joking mood the whole concert. At one point he's like "Where's all the drunk people? Where's all the high people? Where's all the randy folks?" The whole band was fuckin cool. Stef had a smile on his face the whole time, and Chi was playing all over the stage. The sound was also prime. All in all, best fuckin night ever!!! chino3113@hotmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Before i start i just wanna say that was an AMAZING fuckin show! it was my first deftones cancert and it was more than what i expected. ok well anyways that doors opend at 5:30pm and i got there at like 5:00pm and there i was with my girlfriend freezing my ass of for 30 minutes in the rain ..... it felt longer than a 30 min wait. then the doors opend and they were letting people in little by little. we got in and made our way to the stage. 2 other bands were gonna play before them Tursday and Thrice.I think thrice went first they put on a pretty good show, everybody was moshing for the whole set. they went off then like 20 mins later thursday came on they were ok too. finaly after like 30 more mins of moshing and being kicked in the head then thursday left the stage. deftones took like 30 mins to get started but it was worth the wait, as soon as they came out everybody went crazy. They opend up with Minerva i didnt think that crowd would be so agressive durring that song. After minerva they played Be Quiet And Drive once again the crowd went crazy during that song i was punched and kicked in the face so after that i was pretty much half dead so i just crowd surfed and watched the rest of the show from the side.Chino stoped the song half way to calm down the crowd i cant really remember the order of the songs but i know they ended it with seven words.Chino was really interactive with the crowd that was pretty cool. Chi and Chino were calling each other names ,including everyone else in the band, that was funny. But that was an amazing fuckin show anybody who hasn'st seen them yet , U SHOULD because ....DEFTONES ARE THE BEST FUCKIN BAND IN THE WORLD!!!. here are the songs they played: ARENALINE: Bored (with Lucky You in the middle of the song) Nosedbleed ( I was surprised to hear this one, and it was awsome!!!) 7 words (with Say It Ain't So in the middle of the song) AROUND THE FUR: My Own Summer (shove it) Mascara Around The Fur Be Quiet And Drive (far away) Headup (sounds fuckin amazing live) Mx WHITE PONY: Feiticeria Digital Bath ELITE!!! (HOLY SHIT THIS SONG WAS CRAZY LIVE!) Change (In the House Of Flies) DEFTONES: Hexagram Needles And Pins (chino went cazy during this song) Minerva Bloody Cape (the end screams are fuckin awsome) And they played THE CHAUFFEUR!!!!...(this song was awsome because i've never herd it live before) ~ JoHnNy HeNrIqUeZ ~ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- first i gotta say that this was by far the best show I've ever been to!!! the deftones are raising the bar for all the half-assed copy-paste bands out there, and by the looks of it, they still got alot of years ahead of them.the band was fuckin awesome, they are definitely a band you gotta see live, i thought their songs all sounded better than they do recorded! the set was really intense and the selection of songs was great... it played out like a "best of deftones".(w/o damone and root) other than that they pretty much gave the audience everything they wanted to hear and everybody was just going crazy.the T.O. crowd definitely did a good job representin! (and it was def. one of the most diverse crowds i've seen) the band looked like they were having a great time on stage and they were really appreciative of the crowd..i love that they acknowledged their old fans from back in the day..my fav's were around the fur, needles and pins and bored. chino's voice sounded amazing, the pit was good times and everything was just fuckin great.can't wait till the next time!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Awesome show...Just want to clear up that the guest singer on "Head-Up" was NOT the singer of Thrice. It was Jon from Snapcase. Don't know how people are getting it confused...they look NOTHING alike. great show though! tre924@excite.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- by Megan O'Toole It's not often that a crowd's level of enthusiasm is almost as high for the opening bands as it is for the headliners. Such was the case at the recent Deftones concert, which took place at Arrow Hall in Mississauga. This is not to say that The 'Tones received a paltry response; rather, quite the opposite. But the shaggy-haired skater punks and emo kids who dominated the crowd were also super stoked for the two opening sets. Thrice hit the stage around 7 p.m. to an eager crowd that was already chanting their name. Thrice kicked off the night with an energetic half-hour set that charged up the audience, with peppy hardcore stylings that had the crowd wildly moshing. Thursday followed this with a powerful, emotionally-driven set that demonstrated why they have earned such a devoted cult following within the screamo scene. The band had the crowd in the palm of their hand for the duration of their half-hour set. And then it was time for The Deftones, who were returning to Toronto for the first time since the Summer Sanitarium tour with Metallica. This time, the crowd had the 'Tones for a full hour and a half, and the band did not disappoint. They kicked off their set with the first single off their latest self-titled disc, "Minerva," and then went immediately into "Be Quiet And Drive." Following this, the band started into "My Own Summer (Shove It)," which was abruptly cut off in the middle by vocalist Chino Moreno. After signaling his fellow bandmates to stop the music, he looked out at the overly-enthused moshpit and told the crowd to respect each other and refrain from kicking and injuring fellow concert-goers. It was obvious throughout the night that Chino was putting his heart and soul into the music. After the first couple of songs, he jumped offstage and climbed onto the barrier that separated the crowd from the stage. Supported by fans and security guards, he was attuned to the beating pulse of the audience as he delivered the next few songs. On stage, Chino was just as into the music. Convulsing and jumping wildly, he would be on his knees on the floor one minute and in mid-air the next as the music drove him on. The band played a number of songs from their latest album, including "Needles And Pins" and the deliciously uplifting strains of "Hexagram." But this show was not solely about promoting the new disc - it was about delivering the music that fans wanted to hear, including a number of tracks off of White Pony ("Digital Bath," "Feiticiera"), Around The Fur ("Mascara," "Headup," "MX") and Adrenaline ("Nosebleed," "Bored"). There was a short break in the show following "Headup," after which the band charged right into their encore with "Change (In The House of Flies)" and the crowd favourite, "Bored." The Deftones closed on a high note with an extended version of "7 Words" melded with Weezer's "Say It Ain't So" - an appropriate ending for the eager crowd who, when the final notes faded away, wished that it wasn't so.
