Deftones at "Jannus Landing"
Tampa, FL - USA
14 Oct 2004
I'm a big Deftones fan so the thought of them being in my state and me not seeing
them live was killling me. Anyways my friend Michael surprised me when he told me
that he was hooking me up with some VIP passes and tix to the Tampa show as a birthday
gift. I was so damn happy and I immediately made plans to rent a car and drive up
there for my 9th Deftones show ever.
I took my homie Luis with me for his first Deftones show ever. It was our first road
trip and it was definitely worthwhile. We got a cherry red PT Cruiser for the 4:30
hour drive. The drive across Alligator Alley can be extremely boring. On the way over
there we passed by Port Charlotte which was one of the cities hit by Hurricane Charley.
It was a sad site to see. It had been 2 months and the devastation was still evident.
Beach sand on the highway, metal lamp post snapped in 2 like toothpicks, roofs missing
from buildings and fire stations. That was just depressing to see.
We got to St. Petersburg around 6 PM and headed immediately to the venue. It was my
first time there. Jannus Landing is the oldest open air venue in Florida. It's like
from the late 1800s. Anyways the place was small. I mean it's a courtyard basically
surrounded by old buildings. There I met Amy from Deftones board for the first time.
I met her friend Connie too. Both of them were hotties
When it was time to go in I got to meet Steven Kidd (the Deftones tour manager) who
made sure that we got in ok. He told me to hang out after the show so I could meet
the band. I thought that was cool. The opening band was Dredg and it was my first
time seeing them live. They put on a hell of a show and many of those around me were
impressed. Many didn't know who they were but all cheered and gave the band a well
deserved applause. I like the fact that Deftones always has some kick ass opening bands.
All very different.
When the time came for Deftones to come on people really started pushing. I was all
the way at the front and center. Like every Deftones show if you're in the front be
ready for all the flying bodies that happen with all the crowd surfing. Chino came out
and the place went nuts. The whole band joined in and one of the best Deftones shows
I've ever seen started. Chino didn't waste any time and immediately climbed down from
the stage and stood up on the barricade. The crush was on as everyone tried to touch
a piece of Chino. He came out with great charisma and was high fiving people, shaking
hands all the while trying to keep his balance and singing HEXAGRAM as loud as possible.
The crowd kept pushing forward, it was hot as fuck, people kept crowd surfing.
Something I can say however, is that the security crew who worked the show were
the nicest I've ever seen. They would go by with bottles of water and pour water in
the mouths of fans. They were courteous and on top of their game. Definitely the best
I've ever seen. They handled the crowd surfers well. I never got hit and I was all the
way up front. Songs that were highlights for me were Can't Even Breathe, Change, Digital
Bath. They also played their Cure cover for If Only Tonight We Could Sleep. It was so
sweet. I absolutely loved it. They didn't play anything new but what did they play,
they were on top of their game. Chino played around with the crowd and the whole band
was just in an excellent mood.
I don't remember the exact setlist but it was pretty much the same one that's been played
for the whole tour. This is the Orlando setlist and it was pretty much the same as this one:
Hexagram
Feiticeira
Change (In the House of Flies)
My Own Summer (Shove It)
Bored
Birthmark

When the show was finished, Luis and I went outside the gate to wait where Steven Kidd
told us to wait. My homie Luis was so excited. It was his first show ever and he
absolutely fell head over heels for the band. Deftones always convince you with their
live shows. They didn't disappoint and it was one of my favorite shows. So after the
show we waited as kids left. Outside the venue there were a group of about 20 idiots,
I mean ICP fans, pretending to rap. How fuckin' lame. As the place was being emptied
out, we made time for the band. Juan, their roadie, also came by and said to hold up for
them. Anyways after about half and hour, I got to see Chino. We started having a
conversation and then he told me that he remembered me (which I thought was cool) but
that he couldn't remember my name. He apologized as well because he was on some medicine
because he had a cold. We talked for a little bit and as soon as someone caught a
glimpse of him, like 30 odd peeps swarmed him with the typical, "Chino I love you",
"Chino sign this for me", "Chino you're a god", etc. He was sick and bothered but he
was also very warm and receptive and he just tried to keep everyone calm. He looked at
me and told me to follow him while he signed. I wanted to take a pic wth him but I
waited for everyone else who kept bumping and fighting with each other for a piece of
Chino. 3 security guards had to come out to protect him and to help control the situation.
Juan was very nice but people kept pissing him off until he started making people move away.
Chino and I started to talk again and then another swarm of people came by and I just gave up.
As Chino made his way to his bus, I was finally able to get a pic with him. I was the last
one to get one and he thanked me for being patient. He didn't have to but he did and I
thought that was cool. He did sign a CD for me. He also coughed on me and would eventually
give me his cold He went in his bus and a bunch of kids left. Steven was busy working but he
saw me and Luis and told me to stick around so we could meet the other guys. And it happened.
We met Chi and he was pissed because Chino gave him a cold so he was feeling really sick
but he's so awesome that he signed CDs and took pics with us. Some people mobbed him as he
left but it wasn't as many as when Chino went to his bus. Anyways as we waited for the
other band members I met 2 kids from Miami who had come to the show via Greyhound. That
was hardcore. What's funny is that I recognized the one dude I met from the Pompano Beach
show in 2003. We became friends and we hung out next to the bus. There were some crazy
homeless people there who kept trying to get money from us and also touching the bus.
Next to the venue there's a pub and there was this idiot who had gotten drunk who kept
coming out of the pub and banging on the side of the bus. He was this idiot kid that
was so annoying. Their tour bus driver came out and got pissed. The kid wanted to start
a fight and the homeless peeps also were giving him shit.
About an hour later Abe came out and he was funny. He walked by and the few that were
asked to be there were able to meet him and he took pics. While he was signing autographs
the bus door was open and the crazy homeless lady who was one of the those bothering
snuck onto the bus. By the way, Juan had told her that it the bus was Judas Priest's
tour bus when she kept nagging him about what band was in the bus. Anyways she snuck in
and the driver noticed after she was on the bus. He ran in after her and was trying to
get her off the bus. She throw herself on the ground and he had to literally drag her off
the bus. She was screaming like a little kid. The idiot drunken kid then came out and
accused the bus driver of assaulting her and egged the old lady on and she started
bitching that her knee was busted because of the driver. Abe was just laughing at the
situation. The driver went back on the bus and closed the door. The lady stopped bitching
and got up and walked away normally.
Stef and Frank finally came out and they were blitzed. Frank saw me and he totally
remembered who I was. He even remembered my name. I thought that was fuckin' awesome.
He wanted my t-shirt too. He was happy that I was there and he was like, "you really
are a fan, you came all the way from Miami for this show?" Then he started laughing
in his raspy voice. He took pics with us and he introduced me to Stef whom I had never
met. Stef was hella cool. We took a pic together. 3 fat hispanics in one pic. That
was gold. We hung out for a bit until we finally called it a night and went to eat
with our 2 new friends.
The way home totally sucked because the drive at night from Tampa to Miami is horrible.
Luis was able to drive about 20 minutes before I had to take over. We were falling asleep.
I drove all the way to about the middle of Alligator Alley. I finally couldn't drive
anymore and Luis drove the rest of the way home. Anyways the road trip was totally worth
it as this band is totally worth my time, money, and effort. They're down to Earth and
appreciate their fans. I'm happy that I was able to go see them.

Alright, me and my buddy Richard were waiting outside the gate about 45
minutes before the gates were to open for the crowd. Surprisingly enough,
the line formed just before the show was to start. Because of our spot in line,
we started the show in damn good spots according to the stage, wow, ONE DUDE
between me and the barricade. We ended up waiting about an hour for Dredg to come
out. Their set was about a half hour, and then came another cluster of wait.. agh.
Their roadies came onstage and tested out the gear, I heard the guitar techie playin'
something all Stef style and was like "damn, your not Stef.. don't fucking copy the
guy.." About 20 years pass, and I see Abe and Frank cross the stage, I was already
yelling my ass off. Stef shows the crowd a likable grin, and gets into position.
Ofcourse, Chino comes on last.. hmm, big ego Camillo? And Hexagram gets under way.
The pit was just insane, damn. Chino gets off the stage and onto the railing. Some
supportive fans holding him up so he can keep balance on the thin pole.. It was
incredible, he was about 4 feet away from me with a nonstop repetitive delivery of
camera flashes all over him. I was so pissed I didn't buy a camera before hand. I
gotta admit, it was hard to enjoy the performance while being at the heart of the pit.
I'm somewhat of a small guy, 5'9, 136 lbs. Next comes "Shove It", and I recall during
the lyrics, "I try, to look up, to the sky, but my eyes burn.." I was looking up to
the tent ceiling, and reaching up with my arm, with a crazy look on my face, during
the "eyes burn" part..Heh, I acted out all the words, it was kinda lame, but still
cool cuz it was Deftones damnit. Things got a little bit shitty for me during Feiticeira,
I lost BOTH my shoes somehow, the layer of people in front me had all fallen over at
the same time?.. wtf.. they had stepped on the edges of my feet while I fell over too..
This was when I retreated the pit so I can enjoy the show a bit better.. During "Change",
the crowd feedback was incredible!! Not one person in the venue DID NOT sing along! I
was struggling at first with finding a good spot where I can see the band clearly, but
found a decent spot on the left side, about 30 feet from Stef. I was only wearing my
socks for the rest of the show but I didn't care TOO much, old ass shoes.. I ended up
finding them post-show after the pit broke up and people calmed down, WOO! A night I'll
never forget, thank you Chi, Stef, Abe, Frank, and Chino for a night I'll keep in my
heart forever.. - Nelson Chavez
