DEFTONES @ "Roy Wilkins" Saint Paul, MN - U.S.A. 02 Dec 2003 © www.deftonesworld.com Where do I begin...This was my first Deftones show ever in my entire life and I have been waiting for a long time to see them since 1995..I've never had the chance to see them because it never would have worked out..Finally it did...The opening bands, Thrice and Thursday were alright, Thrice had a decent heavy sound to them and got the crowd moshing....Thursday I didn't really care for, the lead singer liked to swing his microphone around alot..Also I was just so exicted to see the Deftones..After Thursday got off the stage it took the sound checkers about 35 minutes to make sure everything was in good condition...Remey Maxwell from Minneapolis Minnesota's 93X radio station came on and toasted a beer to all the fans and asked us "Are we ready for the F*cking Deftones" and the fans screamed and yelled..He got off stage and then finally the lights dimmed...... The Deftones came out and i couldn't believe my eyes, just the sight to see the band that saved my life was great..I loved it...They opened up with Minerva and the whole place sang along and it was so amazing and beauitful to me...They went on to play My Own Summer, Be Quiet And Drive, Hexagram..Not in any particular order, I cant even remember what songs they played i was so exicted, i loved it all..Deftones thanked us all for being with the band and those from the beginning and played BORED and then hit it hard with 7 words...the crowd went insane through the whole show...I crowd surfed too much which was great but the security guys told me if i did it again i would be kicked out...But i did it again and i went right up next to Chino and grabbed a hold of his arm and then reached and grabbed his hand and tears came to my eyes...After that i crowd surfed and moshed and sang and screamed... What a show, Thank you Deftones for such a great inspiration in my life and a great show.. If you haven't seen the Deftones live...Your missing out... DJ Jones Hudson Wisconsin ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WoW and oh yeah..... WoW! This is my third time seeing the deftones and probably my favorite performance. Well... the back to school tour was good too, but Chino sounded amazing last night! I was impressed. He didn't appear to be that drunk which was nice and he hit his high notes! He hit them on digital bath (when he actually sang the chorus) and he hit them on bored. His screams sounded incredible and were full of energy and strength the whole night. Steph was smoking his joints as usual. Chi had his bottle out and was rockin, and Abe was doing his thing with the fan blowin his hair. Thrice and Thursday were alright, but sucked compared to the deftones. The deftones played a pretty good setlist. I heard most the songs that I wanted to hear anyways. They played a cover but I can't remember the name. I can't remember all the songs but maybe someone will post it. The crowd was crazy! I was right by the rail in the beginning, but when chino came in the crowd for my own summer the crowd went crazy and i some how ended up in the middle. I had a camera and got some pretty phat pics. well.. i hope i did anyways. I body surfed during 7 words (my fav song). Over all it was a phat concert and can't wait to see them again! Paul DeMars rocknrolln02@hotmail.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- My first Deftones concert, at the Roy Wilkins auditorium in Minneapolis/St. Paul was an experience for me. The night did start off rather rough though, because I believe thrice and thursday have no place with the Deftones on tour. All the lead singer for thursday did was twirl his mic around and try to act cool. However, the only singer of the night with any stage presence at all was Chino, who knows how to use the stage to his advantage. The wait for the Deftones to come on stage was excruciating, because we got shut out during the Summer Sanitarium Tour in the twin cities and I was definitely ready to hear a longer set or a special song from the Deftones because of that reason. Then the lights dimmed and the red backround appeared while they proceeded to play Minerva. Then they played another song off their new album (bloody cape I think) and after that they finally played some old school Deftones that everyone should know them for with One Weak. After those songs, my mind is fuzzy, but I believe the Deftones played a setlist very close to the one that they played in Chicago a couple nights before. The only addition that I can recall is a cover song that was very slow and seemed to take the energy right out of the crowd (it could have been a depeche mode tune, not quite sure). A couple of other songs that stood out were Headup and Korea, which are staples of Deftones. Also played were My own Summer and BQAD which were enjoyable. One of the very disapointing parts of the night was during Digital Bath when Chino didn't sing 1/2 of the song. (Even Chi said, "good one..." into the microphone after the song) and later in the night, not singing to another song. Also, I don't think Chino was on top of it's game, because some songs sounded off-pitch and muffled with so much distortion on his voice. At some points during the show, he seemed lost and said, "it must have been that weed cookie I ate." After about 13 or 14 songs, they played Bored and 7 words (no Weezer this time) to close out the show (which was great). All in all, seeing The Deftones was a breath of fresh air. I do wish they played some more songs like Elite, Rickets, Lotion, When Girls Telephone Boys, or Lifter, because they passed us by on Summer Sanitarium, but we weren't quite lucky enough to receive that royal treatment. I plan to see the Deftones again soon and urge anyone else to see them as well.
