My 2nd Deftones show (1st was 3 1/2 years ago at the Melbourne Palace in Jan 2003!)...twas quite nice to
seeing them again. Rock-im-Park was definitely better than the Big Day Out in Aus, at least in terms of sound..
and definitely in terms of the lineup. I chose to attend the 2nd day, as the bands I planned to see pretty much
consisted of the Center Stage lineup--Alice in Chains, Deftones, and TOOL (who I would be seeing for the 1st time!).
The guys certainly seemed in better form compared to the last time I saw em, and they played a wider variety
of material across all albums...though not as long as I thought they would, given they were one of the main acts
in the lineup for the day! Their set lasted just
1 hour (give or take a few min)...
They should've played a few more songs for sure...as I was really looking forward to them playing Digital Bath,
Passenger (this is a realistic hope to have since Tool and Deftones are playing alot of festivals together!) or
Minerva (the roadie played the intro riff to it during soundcheck and it got everyone excited!).
At least they seemed to be having fun out there, Chino and Chi talked to the crowd...saying we were louder than
the Rock-am-Ring the day before...Chino sang all of Hexagram on top of the pit--quite fitting given the song--which
was awesome and gave me a chance to grab some great pics! The new track Beware of the Water sounded great...
and reminded us that their new album is LONG overdue, but that when it does come out it should kick major ass.
They dedicated 7 Words to all the deftones fans out there who had supported them over the years..
The crowd was alright, apart from the stupid fucking retards who were essentially there so they could smash their
skulls apart in circle-pits...by the end of it, I found myself in the small section up front where people did not feel the
need to act like retards...but to my immediate left and immediate right there were pits going. I wonder if this is a
particularly German or european thing to do...in Australia it's not that common (and i've been to some pretty heavy
concerts), so I was perplexed by the stupidity I witnessed. Overall it was not enough to ruin my experience, though.
They have pretty decent merch for the tour...I made the mistake of not buying my shirt when I arrived in the afternoon
because it had sold out by the end of the night..oh well, will not repeat that mistake next time..See you all at Roskilde
(where they will hopefully play a longer set...and where we might get to see Passenger performed again after 5 years)!
Peace out,
Deep
