ROCK AM RING - NURBURGRING, GERMANY, JUNE 8th 2003
wow, someone i know arranged passes for rock am ring so i decided to drvie
there with my brother to see deftones again.
we arrived early to see boysetsfire, after them disturbed and queens of the
stone age played. we saw the guys walking around backstage a few times but
since i already talked to them in england i decided to just let them do their
thing instead of being a annoying fan again hahah! they were watching queens
of the stone age from the stage, well i saw chi, stef, abe and tourmanager
steve kidd.
deftones came on after manson. really relaxed and stef started 'headup'. after
that they played 'my own summer'. during 'summer' chino went down to the crowd
and at some point he was standing really high in front of them against the fence
and he let himself fall into the crowd. that looked really cool and it was fun to
watch that. 'hexagram' was next and then they played birthmark which was a nice
surprise. 'minerva' was played after 'bqad' and chino had some technical problems
with his guitar. the sound came out really soft and only during the outro of the
song it got fixed. after bloddy cape chino started to make some jokes about hiphop.
he didn't do the 50 cent lines this time but sang some part of another r'n'b
hiphop song... he was making fun of it a bit.
after a few songs chino walked up holding a drink in his hand. he said: 'this
one is to you' and took a sip from his drink. then he said: 'this one is to us'
and did the same... then he said: 'this one is to everyone' and took another
sip. 'this one is to metallica', and they are 2!!! and he took 2 sips..
he fooled around som more till his glass was empty and said something about
drinking. he said: 'stephan doesn't like drinking. he likes to smoke weed'!
everyone laughed and they were joking around. then chino
said: 'do you like to hear another song?' one which nobody really responded
that much so he said it again: 'do you like to hear another song?, what about
root!' and stef started out root.
right after that they played nosebleed, it was really adrenaline time! setcloser
7 words was done and me and my brother walked behind the stage to catch the band
leaving the stage but strange enough we didn't see anyone leave! maybe they
stayed on till marilyn manson came on.

later, just before metallica were about to go on, i ran into abe who
recognized me and we talked for a while. i brought my shocking 'waldrock cd
sleeve' pictur. i made this cd sleeve with a pic of chino with his pants down
and i wanted to see what the band would think of it now. abe laughed out loud.
he said that show was funny and that he wanted to forget about it in a good way.
he said he and chino downloaded the show from the internet to experience again
what happened! i know chino doesn't like to get asked about it all the time
cuz all is said and done now after that show. abe was cool and he said he was
going to watch metallica so did me and my brother. i also saw chino walking to
the bus, seemd like he was in a hurry, i heard he was in a bad mood but during
their show it didn't seem like that at all.

So actually I went to see my three most favourite bands in the world: Metallica,
Iron Maiden and of course... DEFTONES!
It was the first time i have seen then live and actually i didn't enjoyed the gig
too much because I was extremely tired, half drunk from last night party, and i
nearly passed out because of the heat. I waited for deftones like from 14.00 to 18.15
when they began their set. I couldn't believe as stef began with the riff of Headup,
it was a little slower but cool, and then the action started, I moshed a little bit
but I was fisically so bad that i'd rather stayed a little bit back (10 meters from
the stage) so it was cool because i've seen everything.
Something i found really funny was the fact that stef smoked weed during the whole
show between almost every song. hehe. he is the man...
After Headup came my own summer. Chino went down to the crowd and it began the madness.
Hexagram was a great song and during the chorus (workship-play workship-play) he did
it so well, and he moved like a robot or something during the chorus parts worship
playyyplaaayyy... totally cool.
Birthmark was the best surprise for all of us. It was amazing!
Then came BQAD and it was really cool, althought i felt it was (once again) a little
slower as usual, but it was cool.
During Minerva something happened I think whit the turntables or keyboards from frank,
or maybe chino's guitar. The thing is it sounded awfull almost the hole song, but at
the end the problem was fixed.
He did a lot of hip hop jokes, he talked about metallica, and talked about how much
weed stef smoke. Then he said that the sun good was... i think maybe chino was a
little high.
The riff of bloody cape is the bomb live. It push you to the limit, it makes you jump
like a maniac...it was cool.
Change was a good time for chillin a little bit and to sing along. Is good that deftones
has such beautiful slow songs, because it is good live as an energy recharge...and i
love all the slow songs from deftones.
Feticeira put the madness back, althougt the crowd was not so wild (i think after 2 days
of camping party everybody was in the same fysical state as I : Totally fucked up.)
Around the fur was really powerfull and chino always does really cool sounds at the
beginning of the song. This time he threw the mic at the floor a couple of times.. and
believe or not.. it sounded good.
My favorite song of the deftones album is battle axe and it was almost religious when
chino picked up the guitar and began with that song. I sang it so loud that a couple of
girls next to me told me I shouldn't be so excited about deftones...I said nothing but I
wanted to said, DEFTONES IS THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD .. and you are telling me to
behave? fuck that... I mean, I was like a maniac when most of the crowd was quiet and
loose. It was the best song of the show for me.. it sounded perfect.
Root brought back the madnes to the people. And then nosebleed and 7 words were perfect
as set closers.
After deftones came manson and then metallica. Rock am ring is the best. If anyone has
the oportunity to go in a next time, don't waste the chance...
The deftones concert was my first, and i am not dissapointed, althought , as I already
said, I didn't enjoyed that well because of my body, but I will see the guys in berlin
on september with a perfect circle...
