Deftones @ "Lupo's" Providence, RI - U.S.A. 22 Nov 2003 www.deftonesworld.com Where do I begin? Seeing the deftones live is just an amazing experience. Screaming along to every word of every song, jumping, pushing, I was drenched in sweat when I walked out of there, my ears were ringing, I felt like I had just run a marathon. And I fucking loved it. First off, Lupos is tiny. It was like seeing them on the Guerilla Club Tour, about the same size as the Avalon in Boston that they played at in May. The show started late, the doors didn't even open until 8:00, and Denali didn't start playing until almost 9:00. They pretty much sucked, the chick singer just sang the same way on every song. Crowd didn't really like them. Then Poison The Well came on, they were OK, the singer just yells the whole time and the band just jumps around, seems like they're trying too hard to be hard core. When they were done, I headed toward the front for the deftones, and I almost made it to the barricade in front of Chi. Then the lights went out and it was on! They opened with Minerva (again) and went into Hexagram, instead of Bloody Cape. The crowd was fucking crazy, I'm pretty big, and I even almost fell down a few times. They were in a pretty joking mood, and had a lot of energy for playing a fourth night in a row. Some highlights: A chick right in the front showing her tits, Chino, being the gentleman that he is, covered his eyes, it was funny. Then Chi passed one of his vodka drinks in the crowd to give to her, then made an announcement that he sees chicks flash every night, and a dude should get on somebodys shoulders and flash his dick, that the girls would like it. Luckily, this didn't happen, but a guy did get up on someones shoulders and "flashed" his chest, and he also got a vodka/Gatorade drink. Another part of the show, Chino crawled out on the PA speakers and just laid on them, announcing that the vibrations "felt good on his genitals, especially when theres bass." So Chi started plucking his strings, then told Chino to show the crowd how he fucked by humping the speakers, which he didn't do. Then Chino stood up on the speakers like he was gonna jump into the crowd and was like "this ain't 1994, we're not Pearl Jam", and ended up hopping down onto the stage. After this, Chi told Chino that the chick who flashed wanted to hear 7 Words, but Chino was like "man, that song is loud" but they ended up playing it, Chino got talked into it, it was sick. The set list really had no surprises, except for The Boys Republic, which was cool to hear. Otherwise, the same songs they've been playing on the tour. At the end when they were exiting the stage, Abe tripped and accidentally fell into his drumset, knocking it all over. That was funny, I think he felt stupid and just laid there for a while. Thats about it, another incredible show, but I wished they would have played some different songs, like pins and needles, WGTB, Lotion, and Engine #9. Sorry if this is long, but I know I like to hear details of shows I wasn't at, so I assume you guys do too. I took a whole role of film and I'll have the pics on here soon.. Heres the setlist in rough order, Peace. Minerva Hexagram BGAD Fietacera Korea My Own Summer Bored 7 Words (fucking awesome) Digital Bath Mascara Around The Fur Boys Republic (very cool) Battle Axe Bloody Cape Head Up encore - Change pdfuller@metrocast.net --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- hey guys This shows took place at a club in providence, RI called Lupos, which started at 8p.m.. It was an interesting settings, having the club be extremely wide instead of long. The balcongies were also open to the general public as well. Denali was nothing different than what I expected; A chick singer in an very moody band, vocals somewhat reminscent of chino's moody side and team sleep. They had no energy, but you can't ask much for the 1st band. Poison the well pretty good, crowd seemed to enjoy them and get into their music. Deftones took the stage at like 10:40 p.m. Opened up with minerva, and played it a little slower than on the record. They then cut right into hexagram. Later on, Chino had a girl flash him, and she told Chi that she wanted to hear 7 words, so they played that in the middle of the set. Chino also laid down on top of the speaker cabinet on the left side of the stage for the entirety of feitciera. The crowd then begged him to jump, but I don't think we could've handled his fat ass. He then grabed his guitar and got right into the Boys Republic. I started screaming the second I heard those few intro notes on his guitar, but the rest of the crowd seemed like they didn't know what song it was. I'm from Long Island and go to NYC deftones shows, and I have to say that the Providence crowd let me down. Maybe they got a little tired, but no one even reacted that much to Korea, Bloody Cape, or even Head Up. The set list was also very predicatble, which got me down. I was hoping to be surprised, but nothing new. Boys republic wasn't much of a surprise, seeing how they played it at a handful of other shows on this recent tour. They also neglected much of the adrenaline album which was a bummer. Change as a closer is also not a very good idea. Here's the setlist in the order I can best remember. -Minerva -Hexagram -Be Quiet and Drive -My own Summer -digital bath -mascara -around the fur -bored -7 words -feiticera -the boys republic -korea -bloody cape -headup encore -change That was my fifth time seeing them. I was the dude wearing a white 311 shirt to the left of the stage. I helped this same girl crowd surf a bunch of times during the show. It ended around 12:10 a.m. The deftones need to lay off the "white pony" and start working out. ThaVWplaYa@aol.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "These are not the droids you're looking for." Hot damn, what a night. Another incredible show from the Deftones. I got there around 8:30, a half hour after the doors open. Boy, that was a mistake, I was all the way in the back. I have never seen Lupo's that crowded before. Anyway, Denali came on around 9:00, and I must say, they put on a great set. A lot of people thought they did not work with the show, but I thought they were excellent openers. They had about a five song set, and got off at 9:30. They were much better live then the few mp3s I have. I love the singer's voice. A truly beautiful band. Then Poison the Well came on at about 9:45. Pretty much the same set list as the Palladium show, but a good performance. I believe their set list was: Zombies are Good for Your Health Parks and What You Meant to Me The Realist Botchla My Mirror No Longer Reflects For a Bandaged Iris Apathy is a Cold Body Ghostchant The new songs do not sound half as boring live as they do on the new album. Oh well, they sounded very good and finished up at 9:15. Ah, and then the anticipation for the Deftones. They came on at about 9:50. It probably would of been earlier if Stephen did not have so many guitars to tune, haha. I thought they were not going to be that good considering this was their fourth show in a row and also I heard they had almost the same set list as last time at the previous shows. But nope, they switched it around an played some things they did not. The beginning was like single mayhem. Almost every single they released was played right at the beginning. They played: Minerva Hexagram Be Quiet and Drive (far away) (with extended ending) My Own Summer (shove it) Digital Bath Korea Bored (w/ Clint Eastwood) Feiticeira Chino asked if anyone could do a Prince impersonation and one kid sang When Doves Cry. Then Chino sang the rest, it was quite awesome Mascara Around the Fur Bloody Cape The Boy's Republic 7 Words Battle-Axe Headup (with Jeff from Poison the Well) Encore: Change Most of that is not in order, because I completely forget what the order was, but that is every song they played. Anyways, an incredible show. It really blew me away, it was better than the Palladium show, and I did not think that was possible. My only disappointments were the fact that I never got to hear MX or Fireal and those are two of my favorite songs. I made quiet a sigh considering I had seen them both on numerous other sets. But oh well, The Boy's Republic helped bring some points back. The set list was pretty predictable, but it made me happy it was at least changed around from the Palladium show. And of course, even though I knew they would never play these, I still felt a litle let down they did not play Teenager nor Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event. I have only heard Teenager once and I do not believe they have ever played Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event. Oh well, that is just me being picky. Hopefully they will come around again after the next tour, with a break of course. I do not want them to kill themselves. Yeah, but I could not get my hoody, I was very sad. All they had was XL and those are way too big on me. I got a free Poison the Well DVD, though. I will watch that later on. Hopefully it is somewhat good. Chino seemed very happy after he layed down on the one of the big amps and Chi played bass. Man, it was funny. "Hey, I just realized, that if you just, uh, just lay down with your genitals on an amp, and the bass plays..well, it feels pretty good." Chi played the bass a bit and Chino made some orgasmic sounds. Awesome. I stuck around after the show and talked to Chris of Poison the Well. I was going to talk to Jeff and their bassist but they were talking to other people and this guy told me I had to leave, so I just gave a wave and left. Too bad. Moral of the story is, the Deftones still reign as one my all time favorite bands, they put on an insane live show and everyone should go see them and rock out. And I want to give a "thank you" to Nuno for all of this, you are the man, thank you so much. vowsinashes@hotmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i went to the lupos show on friday. the deftones were amazing. it was my first show and i was really excited that it would be for the best band in the world and not some crappy free punk rock band (am only 15). the openers of the show were denali and poison the well. i didnt even arrive in time to see denali, but i didnt mind, i wanted to see the other bands. right when i got inside, poison the well came on. they were good, which is what i expected. they did about 7 or 8 songs and the crowd seemed it like them. after they finished up, theytold us it was their last night on the tour and left the stage. there was about a 20 minute/half hour break before the deftones. over that time i met a few strange but fun people. one was the girl that flashed the band (you have probably heard from the other reviews). she was surprised to see someone as young as me at a deftones show i guess. finally, the lights dimmed and chino started to play the opening riff to minerva, the crowd went wild. when the music started, it was incredibly loud, much louder than poison the well had been. i slowly moved towards the front. after minerva , they jumped straight into hexagram, chino went into the crowd, but not near me. i was next to the subwoofer, and thats why my ears are still ringing 2 days later. after hexagram, my own summer came on, the crowd was electric. following was BQAD and digital bath. eventualy, they did korea, bored, and mascara. the crowd was quiet after that song until around the fur. i was suprised at how many songs the band did. they continued with boys republic and feiticera. i was not surpirsed that no one recognized the boys republic. me and only a few others were singing along as far as i could tell. next, chi said that the girl i had met earlier flashed them shouting "7 WORDS!!" so they did that song, which i was thinking may be their last, but they went into battleaxe and bloody cape, then they said they had one last song to play, HEADUP. they went into it and the crowd went wild. at the end, chino was looking at the crowd, as tho about to pick someone to sing the rest of the song when none other than Jeff from poison the well came up and sang max cavalera's part, and did a damn good job of it. after this song, the deftones started to leave the stage, when there was an encore. they came back up, practically dragging chino, and finished off the night with a peaceful CHANGE. the song went very well. after this i ran over towards the back under the balcony and got to shake abe's hand, it was pretty cool. all in all, it was the best i could have imagined. sorry if this was long, but i like to get a thurough review from othere so i gave you one. heres the songlist (16): minerva hexagram my own summer BQAD digital bath korea bored mascara around the fur boys republic feiticeira 7 words battle-axe bloody cape headup encore-change Shaydeftones@aol.com
