DEFTONES @ "The Trocadero" Philadelphia, PA - USA 28 Oct 2004 www.deftonesworld.com I've seen Deftones five times before, this makes six, and after leaving the show with no voice and very sore i thought about all the other shows and how they matched up with this one. My conclusion was this was definately the best show they have played that i have seen, they all sounded great, including chino who couldnt stop smiling the entire night. I got there with my friend mike, we took a look at the merchandise which i wasnt impressed in, i brought money for that purpose and coulda left it at home, the only two things i liked was the 'tones original' which looked like the coors light logo, but it was a gray shirt and gray is cheesy, and they had a 40oz deftones holder, three yrs ago i woulda bought it cuz i drank forties like crazy but now i dont as much, if they had just a bottle or can one for regular size beer i woulda bought one for sure. Then i noticed those postcards for the new cd, only they were huge and laminated on the wall, i took two of them down and hid them because i knew i wasnt gonna wanna hold them the whole show, and they were huge and didnt fit in my pocket. the funny thing was after the show alot were still on the walls, i dont think alot of people knew what they were, after i got outside at least five people were asking me what they were, and this one chinese kid saw one of em and was like 'thats gay' and then he realized it was for deftones and changed his mind real quick.Anyway we saw Dredg begin their set, i went upstairs to the bar leaving my under age friend for a brief time. i've been to the troc several times and this time the alcohol intake seemed like it was higher than usual, and there seemed to be alot of weed being passed around cuz thats all i smelled all night, and went i went to the pisser before deftones came on this chick and dude were in the mens room doing mushroom caps. Anyway i got two miller lights, a jack and coke, and a shot of jager all in enough time to get back downstairs as dredg left the stage. now as for dredg, i downloaded a handful of their songs about two weeks ago i wanted to get familiar with them before the show, but i honestly never got around to listening to any of them. But judging by their live show, i think they are a band i'd need to hear on cd to make my final decision because the live show was just OK. we all waited, the crowd was pretty hot after Dredg left the stage, i began to lose my voice as i and other chanted for deftones, someone started a 'fuck bush' chant (im not political both of them can go to hell, arm wrestle and whoever wins is president they both lie and are gonna fuck up the country anyway so who cares)i didnt see any chicks flashing which surprised and disappointed me. anyway the tones took the stage and the place went crazy, they opened with 'FEITICEIRA' which i think was a pretty strong opener, my fav opening song by them was 'MASCARA' like three years ago but this wasnt bad by any means. They proceeded through a seventeen song setlist which was very good, songs i hadnt ever heard live were played and made this concert my personal best, my friend mike agreed on it being their best. 'RICKETS' and 'MINUS BLINDFOLD' were two of my fav songs by the tones and were played for my first time, as was 'RX QUEEN'. The pit wasn't bad, in that i mean i only saw like one fight, (given i was looking back and fourth from stage to pit) during the songs i was in it people weren't looking like they were out for intentional blood, people picked each other up and there wasnt a whole lot of that queer slam dance shit either which was nice. Chino didnt seem to go in the crowd as much as he has in the past, and crowd surfing was pretty much non exsistent everyone seemed to be in their own little 'tones world' and were loving it. everyone (including me) was singing and screaming along, it was a good show with genuine fans (it was sold out weeks before so it wasnt like any joe smo asshole could buy a ticket at the door and ruin it for the other true fans) and a band who seems to be like wine in that they get better with age. setlist:(first song and encore are in order, that's it) feiticeira BQAD bored my own summer change if only tonight (cure cover) rx queen seven words minus blindfold rickets hexagram around the fur nosebleed engine #9 (plus a verse from 'wicked') root encore: minerva bloody cape by xlhabiax ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the sixth time I've seen deftones. Each time better than the last, and this time on Oct 28, 04 was no exception. They came to Philly ready to tear the Troc down. The band seemed to have a lot of energy tonight. Chino was looking good since he lost a lil weight, I'm glad cuz I think that weight was hurting his performance. Unfortunitally the show was cut short cuz some no name band was booked after them. How can you cut the Deftones short?! Well after the show 3 of the 5 memebers came out to meet fans. I was lucky enough to meet Chino, Frank, and Abe. They were cool enough to take pics and sign shit. Abe was cool as shit, he came out and hung with fans for about 15 mins. Steph and Chi were still partying in the upstairs bar. I waited for about 2 hrs. for them to come out and I had to wake up for work at 3am but it was well worth it. But as for the Deftones as long as they make music I will buy their shit and go see them. Can't wait for the next show! Frank ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I knew this was going to be a great night when just moments before I was set to leave for the show I got a phone call informing me that due to an early dissmissal in Philly public schools I would not have to student teach on Friday October 29th. This meant that I could go to the show and go nuts like I wanted to. So I threw on my ADrenaline t-shirt (worn for deftones concerts only) and headed out the door. The doors opened up at 6pm so I got there around 5:50 and had to wait in a long line for about 45 minutes. Once inside though, it was all worth it. I hit the t-shirt stand and grabbed the "pistols" t-shirt to add to my collection. I theh headed upstairs to leave the underaged behind and to grab the best spot I could on the balcony. I was able to grab a spot on the left side (Steph's side) almost directly above the stage. Dredg came on at about 7:15 and played for about a half hour. They were okay, or as a guy behind me said, they sounded like U2 on steroids. I thought it was pretty cool how the drummer played the drums and piano at the same time. They were done and we all waited somewhat patiently for the deftones to take the stage. It didnt take long for the stage to be changed over, but it seemed to take a while for the 'tones to take the stage. This just helped to build the hype and anticipation. The crowd began to start a pit to the PA music. Suddenly, the crowd began cheering and I looked up and the Steph was walking onto the stage. The crwod got louder as the rest of the band emerged. As Chino stood in the middle of the stage, the band began playing "Feiticera" and the crowd went nutsand it was follwed by Change. The setlist was full of old favorites. It was great to hear alot of songs from "Adrenaline" which last year at the Factory they only played one song from Adrenaline. Two definite highlights from the set were "rickets" and "Rx Queen", Hexagram was also a really good. It was the first time I heard those songs live and they sounded really good. Chino included Wicked during the break in Engine #9 and it was funny cause as I rapped along with him I looked around the crowd and mostly people in the balcony knew what he was doing. I also noticed that the balcony went more crazy for the old songs then the floor did....I guess this seperates us old school fans from the new ones. The band seemed to be in a great mood and really seemed to be having fun, enjoying themselves. The encore was "MInerva" and it was fitting, the crowd almost seemed to embrace each other after a night of beating each other up in the pits. The closer was "Bloody Cape" which sent the crowd home happy. As soon as the show was over people began fighting for the banners that were hangin' up on the balcony. One girl on the floor flashed to get hers, it was nice. Seven years ago, I saw my first deftones show at the Troc just weeks after "Around The Fur" was released. The ticket was $10 and the opening act was some band named "Limp Bizkit", I didnt realize then that LImp Bizkit would become the sellouts that they are now. I am so happy that the tones have remained true to their fans, they truely are one of the most underrated bands in the world. They deserve so much credit for staying with what made them famous and changing for airplay. I kept looking up to the balcony to right of stage where at that show 7 years ago Chino climbed onto the balcony during "7 Words" and dived into the pit. I kept hoping he would talk about that tonight, but he didn't. This was my 9th time seeing the tones and they really do just keep getting better and better. I was hoping that I would finally get to hear my alltime favorite song, "One Weak", but I'll hear it next time, maybe They are one of the best live bands out there and their shows truly are something to behold. Here is the setlist as best as I can remember and in no exact order. Bored, Minus Blindfold, NoseBleed, 7 Words, Root, Engine #9 (wicked), My Own Summer, Around THe Fur, Rickets, Be Quiet And DRive, Feitecera, RX Queen, Change, Hexagram, Minerva, Bloody Cape, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep, Brian Cavanaugh
