Deftones @ "Stone Pony" Asbury Park, NJ  - U.S.A. 21 Nov 2003 www.deftonesworld.com HOLY FUCKING SHIT! That's pretty much all I have to say right now. Tonight's Deftones performance blew the NYC performance out of the fucking water. First of all the best part was THERE WERE NO OPENING ACTS...Yup, for whatever reason, Denali and Poison the Well did not play...So it was pure fucking deftones....I got there late and the place was fucking packed and the place is literally like 1/4th the size of the Hammerstein Ballroom, so it was nuts. I found a weird spot right up at the side of the stage near all the deftones equipment and shit but a perfect spot to view the performance from the side...Well that was the best move i could make! Not only did i see the whole performance from the side but I got to chat with Chino's right hand man (Monkey) and he was absolutely awesome. He even gave me a setlist and a guitar pick. In fact, not only are the Deftones themselves fucking awesome people so are their roadies and crew! Well they opened with Hexagram this time instead of Minerva and the roof was instantly blown the fuck off! They played a lot of songs and all of them were intense and powerful as hell. They played Rickets!!! Abe kept starting the song a little offbeat and Chino was like STOP! He kept making a Silence of the Lambs Reference saying "It puts the rickets on it's bones!"..haha nuts Second best deftones show I've ever seen second only to May 5th, 2003 at Webster Hall, NYC... Here is the setlist as it was handed to me... 1. Hexagram 2. Bloody Cape 3. Fietciera 4. Elite (Not Played) 5. Korea 6. Battle-Axe 7. Root 8. Nosebleed 9. RICKETS 10. My Own Summer 11. Around the Fur 12. Minerva 13. When Girls Telephone Boys 14. Lotion 15. Headup ------ENCORE---------------------------- 16. Change (listed last but played before E No 9) 17. Fireal (Not Played) 18. Engine No. 9 (Listed before Fireal) ELITE was not played because Stef started playing Korea right after Fietciera. I think it was def supposed to be played cause Chi started gesturing at Stef to tell him to stop and pointed down at the setlist but you know how Stef is!! He's in his own world so it was skipped...Fireal was skipped because it was hot as hell in that place and they needed to skip it and get off stage. Right before Engine No. 9 chino jumps up and says, "Do you guys remember THIS SHIT?" They played it and took off! Awesome...until next time...peace. ~Erik (in #deftones - Iqueue) - (fireal574@hotmail.com) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.Hexagram 2.Bloody Cape 3.Fietciera 4.Bored 5.Korea 6.Battleaxe 7.Root 8.Nosebleed 9.Rickets 10.Summer 11.Around The Fur 12.Minerva 13.When Girls Telephone Boys {Chino took a nap, smoked pot and talked about drugs, NJ and lotion in a bucket} 14.Lotion 15.Headup ----------------------------------------------- 16.Engine # 9 17.Change 18.Seven Words Asbury Park was out of a Stephen King novel, deserted and absolutely scary. The tickets said "Convention Hall" but nobody was there, only some strange guy on the beach telling us to go to "Stone Pony"... which was more like it. The place was an oversized bar, small, smokey and hot. We got there at 8 expecting PTW but it turned out they were playing a free show somewhere else and that this was an "intimate evening with The Deftones". Ironically, on the back of the stage was a banner for Stone Pony with a "white" pony on it. Anyhow the setlist was banging. The band played practically every heavy song they own in the tiny venue. People were nuts and tore the place up, there were three pits across the whole place. It was a great show, Chino was very active and jumping all over, on the floor, etc... it was a great live Deftones show reminiscent of earlier days. indigo394@optonline.net
