Deftones at The Ermal Festival, Portugal
August, 23rd 2000

It was night already, and I was freaking out...Then I finally saw Stef Carpenter entering on stage, then Chino with Chi ( I hardly saw Abe 'cause the stage was damn high) And I was like closing my eyes and saying 'Thanks God!' then Chino said something like 'Hello Portugal!' and one second after that, Stef started 'Root'...When Abe started the drums, I can't describe what happened on that place, it was like heaven... Chino was two feet away from me, singing in my face. It was a dream. People were bouncing like never! It was impossible to stay indifferent to the Deftones' power. Rumors were saying that Chino was old and he was softer on stage... Softer my ass! He was running from left to right, from front to back...God he couldn't stop! He was so electric! Right now he was on the top of the inner speakers, and the second after that he was jumping like a child on stage. 'Engine#9' came next and it started with Chino pointing the mic to the crowd, and during a minute or so everyone was like 'Wipe! Did! Wipe! Did!' Photographers were taking pictures at me on that moment I don't know why, I guess it was because I was with the Deftones' feeling and I was screaming like a bitch! The band made an interlude for 'Wicked', so Korn's fans were delighted with that... It was time for the White Pony and then Chino came on saying in Portuguese 'Cavalo Branco' that means 'White Pony'. And then they played 'Feiticeira' and 'Change', with Chino on guitar. The crowd was singing it heavenly, just like an orchestra. 'This one goes to someone very special' Chino said before 'Be Quiet And Drive', maybe it was for his wife, we'll never know... After that the impossible happened. Everyone knew that Chino likes to involve into the crowd, but when we saw that stage we were like 'oh man he wont come down' cause the stage was so high, but Chino went down! Then he climbed the crowd's fence and he grabbed my hand (or I grabbed his, still don't know) then he started 'My Own Summer' I was with Chino during that song, singing along with him, and he was like 'the shade...' and I 'is a tool!!!'... then he 'is a tool...' and I 'a device!!!' and he look at me with a big smile, I guess he was thinking something like 'hey man nice voice! wanna join me on my next album?'...course not, just kidding. Anyways he stopped that song on the beginning cause one fan was bleeding out of control. And I just loved that attitude. He was like 'hey! stop the music! help this people up' he showed that he worries about fans and that's good! After he finished the song he climbed the stage and then they played more 'White Pony' with 'Korea', 'Digital Bath' and 'Elite'. Oh I forget the rest of the band. Chi was amazing with his dreads flying around. Stef was on the right mood, always smiling to the crowd. Abe and Frank I hardly saw, because of that stage! Before they played 'Bored', Chino went into a corner and said 'this is the most beautiful crowd we've ever played in the front of ever...beautiful people here in Portugal.' and then he asked 'are you guys ready for Limp Bizkit?'... Yeah we were, but no one was expecting what happened, after 'Bored'. I just saw Fred Durst entering on stage after Chino said 'this song is called 7words'. And there they were. Chino and Fred on the same stage. Chino sang the slow parts and Fred just sang the 'suck!' part, with all his power, and on '7words' break they traded lines saying 'shut up you don't know me!' a few times against each other. As the same way Fred went on stage he just flew out on the end. And the gig was on the end. It was time for 'Headup'. The band gave their maximum in here, just great. Before the show I was expecting for the best show of all times, but it was even more than that... I can't find a single word to describe what happened 'cause I would have to use an entire dictionary to describe it! Imagine yourself on paradise and that's it.

My meeting with the Deftones

This was the night I was expecting for years, and it finally happened. Before the show began it wasn't confirmed if I could meet the Deftones personally or not. So hours before it get started I tried everything to meet them before they start to play. But no one was helping me, and I was totally frustrated 'cause people promised me but... Fuckin' liars!!! So all I had to do was to find the best place near the stage and watch my favorite band as near as possible. And I get the first row, right on Chino's front. I was like crazy during the all show. And after it ended I was almost the happiest man in this world! Almost cause at that moment I hadn't met the band personally. But on that night I was able to do all the shit you could imagine to meet them. I even lost the Limp Bizkit gig. So I went backstage for the last time. And I asked if I could meet the band. Then an angel called Marisa gave me the chance to make that. I was like...still don't know, I was feeling like a child with his favorite candy. So on that moment a friend of mine (miguel wax) appeared and she gave him the chance too. We went on one room, but upss, sorry it was Limp Bizkit room. I saw them and I dind't gave a damn cause all I wanted was the Deftones. And finally she drove us to their room. Well the first thing I saw was Chino and Frank sitting on a table eating chips. And I was like 'oh God what should I say' I shook hands with Chino first then with Frank. And I was like 'well, I'm..ahh...humm..I...you...' and they were staring at me and I couldn't say anything during the first minute. But then Frank helped me... and I told him about this website, and he was like 'really? that's great man' Chino was a bit tired so all I said him was that they were the great, blah blah blah...they asked me 'what's your site name?', and I said DEFTONES//the biggest band in the world, and they all laughed, and I said 'really you are!' ok they accepted. I gave my URL address. Then Frank and Chino asked me about the Deftones board and about some websites, like defjeffrey website. Finally I was up with this two, and the woman who drove us there was about to take us out of there...but no! What about Chi and the others, she said ok just a couple of minutes cause they have to go straight to an interview. Then I met Stef Carpenter he was completely out of this world, all he could say was 'ok, no, yeah, ok...' I said once again thanks to him and then I saw this person on this room looking at the wonderful landscape. It was Chi Cheng! Let me tell you guys, he's the sweetest person on this world! He was with a towel around his head, and I greeted him for his work on the Bamboo Parachute and he was always smiling at me and saying 'really man? thats great!' he was so nice to me during these moments, and after I left the place I told him about the gifts I had for them and specially about his gift, a book from a portuguese nobel prize. And he said 'really bring it man, come on hurry!' but the gifts were 6km from there and I needed 30minutes or so to get all that stuff, and they were about to fly away. So me and my friend we ran all that 6km until we reached my car, but I was so unlucky cause I forgot my car keys on my tent. So I asked some cops if I could drive my car until the backstage and they said no, I had to do all that way on my feet. So I ran until my tent and grab the keys and then ran back to my car. The police captain saw me exhausted and he asked me 'are you the gifts' guy?' and I said yeah!. Then he said 'bring the gifts and I'll give you a ride' And I was perplexed cause cops never gave me nothing, so I grab the gifts and went on the cops car with my friend. There we were on the police car with the emergency lights on! Then my friend received a message on his mobile phone saying that the Deftones had left the backstage and were already on their van. Then we were so frustrated! All that running for nothing, but suddenly I remembered that they arrived in a Mercedes van, and then I asked the cop if he could ask his mates to stop the car on the festival's exit, he said ok. And there I was giving orders to a cop! He asked his mate 'hey the deltomes went out?' I said no! That is Deftones!!! 'and he ahh sorry...the destones...' and I was furious he didn't even knew how to spell it...But like a vision I saw, a Mercedes van, but I looked inside and I couldn't see shit, but my friend said 'look it's stef!' So I asked the cop 'please stop that white van' And he thought me has his captain and he made what I asked, he just opened the car's door and said 'stop the van! this guys have some gifts' Could you imagine? The Deftones stopped in the middle of nowhere because of me and wax (my friend)? But then the guys remembered us and they accepted the gifts and Chino said 'oh man, bad ass fans we have in here' I was delighted with that, and then we talked for more 10 minutes or so. They all signed my shirt and gave some gifts to my friend (like stef's lighter, chi's beer) Then I asked some stuff about songs I had in mind, and I'm hopping to put all that on the respective sections on this website. And some other things I'm hopping to put in here like weird questions I made and weird stuff like: chino's shorts that he gave to my friend's girlfriend, stef's lighter (it's written LINUS on it) and some rare stuff from that day....

It was my day dudes! I'm infinitely happy, thanks God I met them, and let me tell you how great and simple persons they are.
They aren't superstars, they are people like you and me!
They are definitely THE BIGGEST BAND IN THE WORLD!!!
