DEFTONES at "Quest Club" Minneapolis, MN - USA 25 Oct 2004 www.deftonesworld.com i got to say DEFTONES are the most amazing band i have ever seen and heard. i just got back home from there show at the quest club in MINNESOTA and wow. my girlfriend and i got to the show at 5:15 the doors opened at 5, i sat there waiting forever for the DEFTONES to come on stage to start jamming but, then at 7:10 chino walked on stage from tthat point on thshow just begun. if i had a say in it i think CHINO should run for president.the DEFTONES pulled out a badass show once again. from the look and sound of the show the DEFTONES have something very good in store for us fans in the future. i cant wait to hear the new stuff they been working on in the lab.. p.s. MINNESOTA LOVES THE DEFTONES!!!!! come again real soon. deftones are gods in my book. VOTE CHINO FOR PRESIDENT 2004 AARON, AT SCREAMINGDEF1321@AOL.COM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ this was my forth time seeing the deftones and they didn't disappoint. i must say the security guys at the show were dicks. my friend got kicked out right when the tones got on for being a little too protective of his girlfriend and got a little aggressive with some dude. he doesn't know the minneapolis area very well and got lost trying to find my place. he had a very rough night. so anyways it was his girlfriend and i left at the concert. chino's voice sounded great. he was hitting the high notes and his screams were incredible as usual. i was towards the side and couldn't see abe which sucked, but i could see everyone else really well. they didn't talk very much at all, but they had a lot of energy and put on a great show. some of the highlights for me was the encore.(7 words then bloody cape) doesn't get much better than that. i was pretty fucked up so i can't remember all the songs but i know they rocked. peace out!!! -paul ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Having never seen the Deftones, I went to the Quest for the night's sold-out show along with many fellow fans, many donned in Tool or Deftones t-shirts. In line, I spotted the 'Tones tour bus parked adjacent to the venue but didn't see any of the band members. Doors finally opened at 5:05 P.M. as Dredg hit the stage about an hour later to open with "Tanbark." In addition to an interesting stage set-up (their drummer's kit was near the stage's edge in front of Abe's ), Dredg were an entertaining live act as their vocals were heavily influenced by Maynard James Keenan and their drums sounded much like the Deftones. After tearing through four new songs, Dredg's lead singer thanked the crowd stating that he was losing his voice but decided not to cancel the show. They ended their set with "Yatahaze" which caused at least one loyal Dredg fan to sing-along as an extended piano intro signaled Dredg's conclusion. Dredg's setlist (thanks to merkaba from a dredg board) Tanbark Bug Eyes Jamais Vu Hungover on a Tuesday Yatahaze Outro Shortly after Dredg left the stage, the Deftones' crew started to prepare their gear as one technician took a picture of the crowd. Each donned in black, the Deftones met a highly enthused audience before Stephen shredded the intro to "Feiticeira" as Abe soon pounded out a familiar beat. From the opening notes, chaos ensued as the crowd pushed and shoved in an attempt to attain a better spot or mosh. Amidst this calamity, the masses managed to sing-along as we also followed Chino's lead by throwing our middle fingers into the air during the "Fuck's!" As is the case with many Deftones concerts, "My Own Summer" was the second song in the set with the chorus was yelled at an incredible volume. "Nosebleed" maintained a similar level of intensity as Chino bounded about the stage, bended over, and screamed as a strobe light flashed. After a frenzied run through two intense oldies, there was a brief pause as Chino took a guitar to play "Change." The crowd began to calm, sing along or even record the song with their cell phones. Though I had heard allegations that Chino often performed drunk and couldn't sing live, I must say that he was spot on perfect for the song that first drew me to the Deftones. But keeping with the set's theme, the Deftones ripped through "Hexagram" as Chino stood on the barricade for the better part of the song then dashed around during an inspired run through "Around The Fur" and "Rickets." Just as "Change" signaled a respite from energetic classics, "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" caused the crowd to come to a still. "R.X. Queen" maintained a slower pace and was a bit of a surprise just as I was surprised to notice that Chino seemed to forget a few lyrics. In his defense though, he may have just been pausing to let the fans sing-along considering many belted out the chorus but failed to sing the verses. But in light of the recent Ashlee Simpson controversy, I'm glad a DAT didn't play in place of the vocals. Chi Cheng displayed his bass wizardry on "Minus Blindfold" before delving into a chaotic "Engine No. 9." "Digital Bath" was delivered with pristine vocal precision and another White Pony classic, "Knife Prty" was given the live treatment. A personal favorite of mine, I enjoyed the live performance with my fellow peers who sang along to a near perfect rendition. A slightly abbreviated "Be Quiet And Drive" received a warm welcome as 1700 some people jumped around before the band effortlessly segued into "MX" which would close the initial set. Though Stephen remained on stage, the rest of the Deftones left as the crowd began to chant "7 Words! 7 Words!" Sure enough, Chi, Abe, and Chino returned to run through the Adrenaline classic before closing with "Bloody Cape." Deftones 1) Feiticeira 2) My Own Summer (Shove It) 3) Nosebleed (with strobe light) 4) Change (In The House Of Flies) w/Chino on guitar 5) Hexagram (Chino sang on barricade) 6) Around The Fur 7) Rickets 8) If Only Tonight We Could Sleep (Cure Cover) w/Chino on guitar 9) RX Queen w/Chino on guitar 10) Minus Blindfold 11) Engine No. 9 (with Wicked) 12) Digital Bath w/Chino on guitar 13) Knife Prty 14) Be Quiet and Drive 15) MX Encore 16) 7 Words 17) Bloody Cape Overall the Deftones performed at an incredible level with very few errors as their live show has set them apart from their nu-metal peers. Though there was a bit of a lukewarm commercial reception to their 2003 self-titled release, possibly the reason why only two songs were drawn from it, it's nice to know that the Deftones are still a potent live act capable of selling out venues. The night was an eye opening experience to their proficiency and a reminder of the power of their stellar back catalog. From the raw intensity of Adrenaline and Around The Fur to the passionate, meditative White Pony, the Deftones managed to contrast moments of pure fury with serene, pensive detours proving their unique place in a homogenous, uninspired metal scene.
