Deftones @ "Mesa Amphitheatre"
Phoenix, AZ - U.S.A. 01/11/03
www.deftonesworld.com
The venue is supposedly in a "residential" area and all shows at this
amphitheatre must be over by 10:30 pm. Another reason why Mormons suck
(mormons run Mesa). So the show started promptly at 6:30 with the female
fronted Denali. This band kicks ass!!! Then came Poison The Well. Another
awesome hardcore set. If You've never heard of them check them out!!! For
some reason the crowd didn't get to crazy. A few pits here and there. then
came Deftones. They opened with Minerva and went into Bloody Cape. Chino
appeared to be wearing the same clothes as the night before. After a few
songs the crowd was going crazy. We decided to stay back this show and I'm
glad. This was probably the most intense crowd I've seen at a show. Then
they played Shove It and right before they ended the song they blew out the
power!! It was pretty funny but it also sucked because that cut their set at
least 2 songs short. Chino was in the crowd for a good portion of the set.
Didn't start talking towards the middle of the show. After Korea Chi said
some about Bel Biv Devoe and Chino sang a minute long interlude of "That
Girl Is Poison". Pretty funny!! After Poison the played The Chauffer. They
ended with Feiticiera?? Of all the Deftones shows I've been to (too many to
count), San Diego and Mesa were definitely the best and the strangest. I've
never seen them close with no encores and with oddball songs like Lotion and
Feiticiera...Anyways great show and here are all the songs they played!!

the frist band opening was deali they were ok but had zero energy and all there songs
sounded the same.I heard alot of people saying how there singer wasnt very good-looking
but I didn't see anything wrong with her. I do have to admit they kinda seem out of place.
One funny thing i noticed was that the singer of denali used the same guitar as the guitar
player as poison the well (and i don't mean same kind i mean same guitar) it was kindof funny
after denali got of then there singer took off her guitar and gives it to the guitar player of
poison the well and he holds on to it until they were ready and played. Poison the well
played a good set but I kinda though they played to long seining as how almost all there
songs go the same way. Like there heavy then emo heavy then emo it got annoying but when
they left I was OK. It seemed like forever for deftones to come out but when the lights
dimmed we knew they were coming. Right when chino hit the first note of minerva it was just
a giant rush of people fighting to get closer. Every one was so crushed together it was
crazy it turned into a pushing spree that went on the whole show.Usally the pushing stops
after the first couple songs but this one didnt.I was standing right near the stage, about 5
people up i had moved there after be quite and drive, and then chino comes over to us and
my own summer starts and he comes over to us and sings the chorus. Then he jumps of stage
and gets on the barricade and a giant rush of people come pushing there way threw everyone
so we push back at them then out of nowhere one person get pushed and lose his footing
puling the guy in front of him down with him and then that one falling dose the same thing
and so one and then a big ass person pulls me down and i get crushed buy a very fat guy.
When chino sees this he says to the band "hold up hold up stop for a second"then he says to
us "hey help them get up cmon we gotta work together here were all family".After we get up
he continues the song but by that time I was very tired so I went and got water. After a few
more songs chi talked to be about something then the played another song and chino said
something like "you mother fuckers are the most hard core fans we've seen all tour"i lost my
voice during hedup cause I was creaming so loud. Then during boys republic i did a crowd
surf which i had done before but this time it went different i gave everything in my pokets
to my friend and went up to 2 big ass guys and told them to lift me like i always do but
when i saw them moving me towards the most pit i thought o shit this is gonna hurt like a mo
fo.But when i got near it i landed on some kids who had no idea what was going on and they
didn't know that u push the person away thats crowd surfing so i fell on them and hit the
ground very hard but my head doesn't hurt that much. after the show me and my friends went
to the bus area and i got a back stage guest pass which but they didn't let me in so me and
10 other wait for the deftones to leave. After 30 minutes the limo finally comes out and when
it dose i lit up my lighter and saluted them and every ones else waved but the driver kept
going so all we saw was the limo stoped in frongt of us for about 10 seconds. i think i saw
somebody take pics of us from inside and i know i saw stef light up a joint but we couldnt
follow them casue they were gone so we all went home.

the only problem was they had to be off stage by 10:00 becuase there was a big hotel right
next to the place and the place was a open venu aimed right at the hotel so all the sound went
threw our ears and into there rooms so they got off stage at 9:00 and the show started at 6:15

We got to Mesa Amphitheater around 5pm and I was able
to get my tickets on will-call pretty quickly. There
was already a pretty big line to get in, and the first
band, Denali, was scheduled to go on at 6:30pm.
We did not see Denali but only heard them from the
parking lot. Poison the Well was a great band, let me
tell you. I saw them open up for Kittie once, but
tonight they were on fire--very good opening band for
the Deftones.
Now to the Deftones. I won't put up the setlist,
since I forgot the order--but they did play the
Chauffeur again, and the song from the first White
Pony release, not available on the regular CD. It was
a great show let me tell you. This was my fourth time
seeing them live, but actually, I think it was the
weakest performance. Firstly because I think Chino
was not hitting the notes on most of the tunes, and, I
think the he was tired from playing three shows in a
row (San Diego and Vegas, before Phoenix). Also, I
think he was kinda fucked up, probably had a little
too much too drink or something...and he was not
moving around so much (too fat to move around now
compared to the White Pony tours?). I don't know. I
know it sounds harsh, but its true--him and Chi have
pot bellys now, ha ha.
The sound sucked tonight also--in fact, after the
second song, Abe started playing, and the sound was
off, so he got pissed and slammed his sticks down.
Chino said something later about how cute Abe looked
when he was angry. That was funny.
Don't get me wrong, it was a great show. The crowd
was going fucking nuts, even though it wasn't sold out
or anything. The weather was great, it was an outdoor
gig, and I noticed that Chino also must have a few
pairs of the same shorts, or similarly colored blue
shirts, since he was wearing the same thing as the LA
shows. It was a great show, but I've seen the
Deftones in better form.
Love,
Walter (revolution_1977_m@yahoo.com).

First, I want to thank Hoobastank for dropping off the tour. Thanks to that, I got to see
Denali. I listed to a song or two once I heard the Deftones handpicked them to go on tour.
Now, they are easily in my top ten list of all time favorite bands. They're really great
musically, but the singers voice is FUCKING INCREDIBLE. They kinda sound like Beth Gibbons
from Portishead singing for Mogwai. They're not hard by any means, but they are an incredible
band. If you like Team Sleep material, you'll like them. They don't disappoint live.
If you're into really good music, regardless of genre, you'll like them. If you're a fan of
GREAT music, you'll fall in love with them like I have.
Poison the Well was next. I suggest using their time to go get a beer, check out the merch
booth, or do anything but watch them. They're not the worst band in the world, but they're
nothing great. If you want to check out hardcore bands, check out Dillinger Escape Plan or
Botch (RIP) or Fall Silent. Poison the Well has nothing on those guys.
Finally, Deftones. This was my 9th time seeing them and this was probably the 2nd best show
of theirs that I'd seen. Here's the highlights.
--At the end of My Own Summer, something blew, and all the audio went out, right as the song
was ending. Really dramatic. It took a while to get it fixed, and Abe got pissed and broke
a drumstick on his set. When everything got fixed, Chino made fun of Abe, saying how cute he
was when he's pissed, and how he looked so glamorous with his hair blowing in the fan.
--Bloody Cape is so much better live. Chino screams nearly the whole song
--Chino climbed on top of the speakers for the end of Around the Fur. Then, either before
Girls Telephone Boys or during it, he started doing the crane like in Karate Kid, and Chi
started doing it back. It was really funny. Oh yeah, they played Girls Telephone Boys. Ha
ha ha to all that haven't seen it. Wait, it gets better.
--After that, Chino and Chi started talking back and forth about the names Jesus and George,
and how George and Jorge are the same, and then they started playing part of Bell Biv Devoe's
"Poison". You know, "never trust a big butt and a smile." Somewhere in there, they were
talking, and they said something like " how blah blah blah is just like Duran Duran." What
does this mean?
--It means they played The Chauffeur. I saw that they played it in LA, and I was so pissed that
I didn't see it. Now I have, and it is by far my greatest Deftones concert moment. They were
AMAZING. It sounded like they played it every night. I could have died a happy man at this
point. Good thing I didn't.
--When they came back for the encore, the played Change. Then, Chino says something like "For
those of you who bought White Pony when it first came out, the smart ones, you got this song
with it." They then played Boy's Republic. So, not only did we get to see Girls Telephone Boys
and The Chauffeur, but we also got to see Boys Republic. After seeing the Deftones so many
times, one could criticize them for not changing up their setlists enough. They completely
redeemed themselves for that tonight. This was one of the best setlists I've ever seen them
play, not just in terms of variety, but also in performance. Here's the setlist; forgive me
if it's slightly out of order.

Forgive my if I omitted anything. Oh yeah, if the dude who was was limping and then fell to
the ground later read this, I hope you didn't break your leg and that it's nothing serious.
Fuck you to all those who were right by him and within 10 feet of security, yet took 5 minutes
to actually go get them. I hope you all actually do break your leg someday. Finally, go to
the shows early, go see Denali, and then go thank the Deftones for inviting them out.

first off let me start by saying this was not the best show deftones have played. denali is a good
band but they are boring as hell live and all there songs sounded the same and the only one i knew
they didn't play. then poison the well,an excelent band, only played about 6 songs and i was there
for them just as much as i was for DEFTONES.they didn't play any of there older stuff though and that
was very disapointing. then the best band in the world came on. they started with minerva which is an
incredible song but its not an opener. the rest of the show was pretty good and they played for about
an hour and a half they had some technical diffuculties with chinos guitar taking away from there set
time. the most disappointing thing about this show was the lack of songs they played they didn't play
anything off adreanline, which in my opion was there best album, except bored. which means no 7 words,
no root, and no engine # 09. then they must of forgot the fact that lotion is the best song in the
world and forgot to play it. not to mention elite teething and can't even breathe would of been nice.
another dissappointing thing was there was no encore. after waiting about ten minutes and chanting for
the them the whole time i left kinda happy but filled with dissapointment. so all and all it was
something to do not quite worth my money and disapointing. i am a huge fan and always will be but
this show was not the best thing in the world.

Well first off got ther early and Denali was playing. Boring. I know a lot
of people ther liked them but I wasn't one of them. Poison the Well wan
next, and they were really good. First time to see those guys and they were
good. Deftones hit the stage next and they started off with Minerva. I
won't be able to tell you the entire set list, but I will give you some
highlights. They did play my favorite BQAD, that I do remember. At one
point Chino climbed on the speakers and finished Around the Fur. He then
yelled at Frank to tell him what was next "when girls telephone boys"
finished that song then came down to finish the rest of the show. During my
onw summer Chino told the rest of the band to stop the music, because
someone in the pit was getting getting hurt. The band never really did
stop, just kept the beat going and when the came back in it sounded awesome.
At the end of the same song I belive the power cut out. Took them about 5
minutes to get going again. They played the Chauffer, which I have never
heard them play live. Some of the other highlights. The freaks come out at
night by Houdini, and a quick version of Poison by Bell Biv Devoe. Remember
kids never trust a girl witha big butt and a smile. Knowing that Max from
Soulfly lives in the Phoenix area, I was thinking that when they did headup
he would run onto the stage. Didn't happen , but the song rocked none the
less. Chino did however dedicate the song to Max's son Dana. Overall the
show rocked. I have now seen the 'tones in a outdoor arena, a shed and 2
small clubs. This show is probaoly top 2 or 3 for sure. For those of you
people who are waiting to see them. The wait is well worth it. Being that
this was My wife's first Deftones experience( I have corrupted her), she
said she loved it. Oh yeah the 4 hour drive down to Phoenix and back
home(New Mexico) was well worth it. Have fun kids and enjoy the show when
you get the chance

saw the Deftones show in Phoenix AZ on saturday
Novemeber 1st and i must say it was the best i've ever seem them play.
to make it short and sweet Denali opened the show and it was horrible.
Denali is great on cd but live theirs just no energy there very, very boring
live plus the singer sounds just like the girl from Portishead. next up
was poison the well and they were fucking sick, they only played like
6 songs and were done but they sounded good. Then came the Deftones
they blew fucking mind and i dont need to say anymore.

Well first off I hate the fact that Mesa has a silly ordenience about shows ending before
10:30pm. I honestly didn't think the show would start at 6:30pm, but I was wrong, hence
the reason that I was late and missed both opening bands and the first couple of songs from
Deftones Set. Which sucks. But then again if it was up to me I would have been there at
5pm but one of chicks I was with had to work until 6pm. Plus we live in Fucking Surprise
which is like 2 hours away. And to make matters worse I had the fucking flu. Ok anyways
enough bitching. hehe.
The show was good, I have seen better deftones shows but the drive over was well worth it and
being with my old Deftones friends was great! My friend Kari and I started on the left side
of the stage and some how ended up in the middle with a bunch of crazy ass motherfuckers. But
I had fun and ended up with 5 or 6 burises most of them from my friend going crazy. haha.
(Kudos to the dude in the Red shirt in front me, you know who you are remember the blond haired
chick who hit you and the black/red streak haired chick who was trying apologize for my
drunkerd friend. Thanks for helping me regain my footing again and again)
Chino is fucking crazy dude he was all over.. on top of the speakers, in the crowd..teasing
his bandmates. He's a funny dude.
Deftones played all the songs I wanted to hear plus more I haven't heard in a very long time.
The setting was great, the weather was wonderful, I lost my voice mid-mascara.
Its now Tuesday and my brusies are healing, I'm still coughing my lungs out, and I can't help
but wish I was back at the show.

Me and my bro-in-law sat out in the parking lot before the show to chow on some fillibirtos
and some beer, knowing inside the beer would cost some big bucks. Well, we went in and still
paid 8 bucks for two beers (profits went to the boyscouts?!). Finally, Denali played and they
had a few decent moments but mostly sucked. They just droned on and on with the same damn sound
for a long time. Poison the well was ok. God, it took forever to get to the deftones... We were
about 4 rows from the front and got absoloutly crushed when the show started. It was STUPID!!!
Ya'll hear that?! People who were trying to enjoy the show couldn't because they were just trying
to survive. I saw a few girls crying in pain just trying to get out of the crowd. It continued that
way for the whole rest of the show. Me and my bro were just trying to enjoy a close view show
and were constantly getting caught in the pit. We spent more time defending ourselves then
getting to enjoy the show. Some of ya'll may be proud of being the 'most hardcore fans' but
geez... Sorry to the people I stuck a hard elbow in but, get the FUK off me!!! It seems
towards the last 30 minutes everyone started to chill some. As far as the show, well, as usual,
voice was mixed way to low. I could barely hear the vocals over the instruments, that sucked!!!
The vocals are what make the music damnit! Anyways, overall it wasn't the best show. Next time,
I hope I can actually hear Chino sing and I hope the dumbass moshers stay home so I can
enjoy the show instead of shoveing people off me.
