I'll only accept reviews from recent shows!
Seeing the Deftones for the first time blew me away, just
seeing how intense these five guys could play together made
me forget about any other band at the BDO and made the three
days wait for their solo show a very long time.
Arriving on Thursday at the Palace I couldn't wait to
see how the Deftones would sound in a confined space with their
true fans. And boy was I not disappointed one bit. Coming out to
a huge roar I knew it was going to be loud but I didn't think that
loud, little did I know that my ears would still be ringing as I
write this review. Opening with Lotion was just about the heaviest
thing I had ever heard. The guitar cut through you, with Abe
hitting his drums as hard as possible. Then came My Own Summer
which if Lotion wasn't heavy enough for you then this sure was.
Next came an unexpected live song, Lhabia was played and boy didn't
it rock. With the crowd going crazy Chino announced that they weren't
fucking around tonight repeatedly to the joy of the crowd.
Then followed Feiticeira and Bored, this song was never my favourite
but to hear it live just blew me away. The inclusion of Gorillaz's
Clint Eastwood bought a wry smile to the face of everyone in the crowd
and to Chino. Although there was a problem with the guitar in Bored the
band didn't even seem to care and just went about their business like
true professionals. With no sign of anymore technical problems the band
ripped into Be Quiet and Drive. From here I can't really remember the
order of the songs however these are all the songs they played. They
then launched into Korea, Around The Fur and a welcome surprise being
Nosebleed. Followed quickly be Change, Mascara (seemed to hit that much
harder live, it was quite amazing) and Lifter closed out their set.
The amazing thing was that the songs that were played off White Pony
worked so well I was astonished at how heavy and intense they sounded live.
With the crowd cheering for an encore on came the Deftones to the chants
of 'Headup' and 'Soulfly', finally came Headup. This was very cool with
the crowd doing their part by singing the 'Soulfly' part with Chi.
Leaving again we all hoped that this wasn't it.
Luckily they came out one last time. Chino asked the question 'How many
people came and saw us when we were here for Adrenaline?', not many
people raised their hands. Then Chino said 'I thought so, well here's a
look at it, very quickly' with Stef bursting into the riff that is
Engine No. 9, the Deftones then lift to the almighty applause of a very
impressed crowd.
As the lights came on I realised just how good a show I had seen, I
returned home a happy man to have finally seen the Deftones unbelievable
live show.

On the 30th of January 2003 I got to see Deftones play live at the Palace in
Melbourne. I had been wanting to see them at this particular venue because
when I saw SOAD play there I realised how of its tits Deftones would be at
the Palace. I was wanting to see 'Sparta' open for the Deftones, because
they played good at the Big Day Out in Melbourne, but some shitty band
called 'Brace' opened for them instead which was a bit of a let down. But
everything made up for it when Deftones came out on stage. By now I was
hyped as and for them to open with Lotion got me so much more psyched. Chino
was on the barrier singing in nearly all of the songs, which made all of the
people in the pit go even more nuts. Chino was saying stuff to the crowd
that he was sorry that they hadn't been to Melbourne in ages and that they
will be back real soon.
The set list when something like this:
Lotion
My own summer
Lhabia
Bored (with 'Gorillaz' cover) (Stef's guitar stuffed up at the end)
-----------------------------------------
5. Feiticeira
6. BQ&D
7. Korea
8. Around the fur
9. Nosebleed
10. Change
11. Mascara
12. Birthmark
-----------------------------------------
Headup
Engine No. 9 (with 'Wicked' in the middle)
At the end of the concert I found a guitar pic on the ground, but I'm not
too sure if it's the Stef's or if it's the shit band that opened for them.
One of my mates got a chunk of the set list and it had Root and Lifter
written down, but I don't know why they didn't play those two songs. Any
way, seeing them live for the second time has made me even more keen for
their new album due out in May.
