Deftones live
October 16th 2004 "House of Blues"
Myrtle Beach, SC - USA
http://www.deftonesworld.com/
Dredg opened up---great set, drummer plays keyboard while drumming, quite
impressive.
Deftones came out without much waiting, sold out show, tight crowd,
expensive beer. They didn't talk much to the audience, didn't miss a beat,
everything sounded fucking awesome. Go see them, pit was agressive but
non-violent, nobody broke their face or left covered in blood (that I saw),
great vibe, crowd were almost all fans, new every word to nearly every song.
Long line for ticketholders, metal detectors, cell phone cameras can get in.
Set list (close to the order, not exact):

Damone
Root
Nosebleed
If Only Tonight we Could Sleep
My Own Summer
Around the Fur

The opening band, Dredg, was one of the most original bands you could
hear. The drummer played keyboard while still playing drums; go see it to
believe it. The singer had a good clear, strong voice and would sometimes
lean down and play an instrument when he wasn't singing; not sure what it
was but it was orchestral. The bassist would sometimes go and hit the crash
cymbal with his hand for the drummer, while he was still playing his bass;
he'd just play a note and let it ring and then hit the cymbal before going
back to his bass. The guitarist had some of the most original sounds and
effects as well. They sounded sort of like Coldplay but more of a rocky
edge to them so it was good to hear; they were a great band. The first
few songs they played were good but the crowd wasn't really into it yet,
or so it seemed, but by the end of the show, they had the crowd going and
it was obvious they had at least made a dent.
Afterwards, the stage crew came to remove Dredg's equipment and the crowd
waited in excitement for the Deftones. After not so long of a wait,
the band walk onto the stage and started into "Hexagram." I don't remember
most of the show because the crowd was incredibly CRAZY but from what I do
remember, they put on an awesome show. Chino stepped up on top of Chi's
bass cabinets and it was awesome to look so high up and see him standing
there singing right in front of me. His voice sounded really good; it
seemed to have actually gotten better. After Hexagram, they started into
"My Own Summer" and the crowd screamed the "Shove it, shove it, shove it!"
as Chino and Chi did their parts. The crowd screamed it so loud that Chi
didn't even have to scream the "Shove it, shove it, shove it!" if he had
chosen not to. During "Digital Bath," Chino seemed to be having trouble
with his guitar and it seemed as if he were playing but no sound was
coming from the speakers, but it was hard to tell with the crowd being
so loud. I do not remember the entire set list in any
order but I do know they played these songs:
Hexagram
My Own Summer
Change
Digital Bath
Nosebleed
Root
If Only Tonight We Could Sleep
Bored
Knife Party
7 words (sounded better live than I thought it would; Abe is great)
Around The Fur
I know they played more songs than that before the encore, maybe 3 or 4 more,
actually, but I'm not clear on what they were. They walked off stage, but then
Stephen returned with a cigarette and just stood on stage, smoking, while looking
out at the crowd in the darkness. Then Chino walked out with a guitar, looked out
into the crowd and started the intro to "Minerva." It felt as if he wasn't just
singing the song but actually singing it TO us; maybe I'm wrong but thats
how it felt at the time. Afterwards, Stephen started the opening riff to
"Bloody Cape" and the crowd was excited once again and I worked to move
closer to the stage but without being a jerk about it (I hate it when you
are close to the stage and then some jerk comes and pushes past you, not caring
about you or the people around you. They could at least be nice about it if they
want to be closer so badly; I don't mind letting someone ahead *sometimes* if they're
nice about it.) seeing as how this is my favorite song by the Deftones. Chino squatted
down at the front of the stage and looked down into the crowd where I was and we said the
words along with him. Kind of funny how at the end, when he screamed the "God help me!"
part, the crowd got so crazy that it seemed as if we would all collapse onto eachother
and it was pretty scary, actually. The crowd was one of craziest I've ever
experienced and at times it actually got plain rediculous; to the point of not being
able to even watch the show! But the Deftones gave us all an awesome show and
before long, they walked off stage and it was over.
