My meeting with the Deftones at Madrid, Spain
September, 6th 2000
The first thing I have to say is that I know I'm gonna forget a lot of stuff while I'm writing this, 'cause something different was happening every second. I went to Madrid, just to see the Deftones live. But during the concert everything was suddenly changed. All because of Chino and my necklace...I still don't know how to describe what happened. It was one hundred times better than our first meeting. And sincerely I wasn't expecting to meet them like I met. But thanks to Chino and his gratitude to me I was able to hang with them more than one hour. We were like best friends...me and the five band members. During that time I wasn't a fan. I was a friend...But as I said, I went Madrid just to see them live, I wasn't expecting to meet them again. After all I had met them two weeks ago...I couldn't be that lucky...
The concert started at 10pm or so, I can't remember, I just know I had to listen to three spanish bands 'cause I wanted the first row, and I got it. Once again there I was, two feet from Chino...And thanks God this stage was much smaller and I could see them all. The concert started with that 'Twin Peaks' theme. And right after that Chino ran into the stage to start 'Be Quiet And Drive'. And he climbed the inner speaker that was in the front of me and he stared me. I guess he was like 'what is he doing here?' You guys had to see his face, it was like he had seen a monster or something like that! But then he started 'ohh..this town...' and he finally smiled, 'cause he recognized me from our first meeting, and that first meeting moved them because all the effort me and friend had with all those gifts. But during the all concert until 'Lotion' Chino was giving me a special treatment...just like if I disserved that. He was singing every song and on some chorus he was pointing the mic at me and looking at me smiling a lot of times, ohh I was completely out of this world and I knew that something special was about to happen. He started 'Lotion' and when he sang 'I feel sick right here' he stared me once again and I saw that he was holding the mic with his right hand and with the left one he was doing something like 'come on' I didn't get it at first but then I realized that he was asking for my necklace (it was a necklace with the deftones' star). I wasn't believing on that, but I just removed the necklace and I threw it to his left hand, and he just grabbed it! And he put it around his neck...I can't describe what I felt, Chino using something that I gave him!!! Then he sang 'Lotion', 'Mascara' and 'Digital Bath' with my necklace. In the end of 'Digital Bath' he removed the necklace and came straight to me and said 'hey man thanks for this' and I just freaked out...I was totally out of words the only thing I remembered to say was 'I meet you backstage' and he said 'ok!'. So there you have my free-pass to the backstage! Then he went to Abe's drums and hung my necklace on the drums, then he grabbed a broken stick and gave it to me. The crowd was perplexed seeing that. And everyone was asking me 'do you know him?' and I said 'yeah...we are like...best friends, he talks with me everyday.' Then Chino jumped into the crowd and started 'Korea', in the end he grabbed one of his guitar's pick and said to the security man 'hey give this to the white shirt guy'. That was me. God! Chino was giving me everything! On '7words' break he stopped, and said 'speak fast you don't know me...' Then he pointed the mic to a fan, hopping he could say the rest, but he didn't know the rest of the song, then he came to me and I said 'what about fred?' and he laugh so much. Then I said 'squeal like a pig...' and he ended 'when you big fuckin, big fuckin ape!' Believe it or not. I wished to have this recorded so you could all see what happened. I saw some guys filming that. And if you're the guy who filmed that please tell me cause I need that tape plsss!!! On the end they did an encore with 'Engine#9' mixed with 'Wicked' and 'Subliminal', and then they said goodbyes to Europe cause this was their last time here (this year). After they leave the stage, Mike Pipper (deftones' tour monitor) came to me and said 'hey Chino send you this'...Unbelievable!!! It was the setlist of that night.
To went backstage was so easy cause I had Chino's word already. So I went their room, but they were all naked and Chino said 'hey man wait a sec ok?' and I apologize him and waited near the fans that were waiting for the band. Then the band came and I just took some pics with each one and on the end they went their room again and I asked Frank if I could go so I could talk with them, and he said that was ok. So I went the Deftones' room. It was me and they alone. There was food flying around, cause Abe was eating and spiting food everywhere, then he offered me pizza and right after that yogurt and cookies, and I said no! Then he just swallowed everything just like a machine. The band thanked me for all the gifts I offered them in Portugal. And then Abe asked me 'do you have more?' and I said 'no, all I have are some pics of my deftones' graffiti, some drawings and some printings of defmorphations'. They all said 'hey show us that'. Ok I started with the drawings my brother has made and they all enjoyed that, specially Chi. Oh I was so bad with him, cause he wanted one of the drawings and I said no. Sorry Chi!!! Then they all signed the drawings saying greetings to Portugal (Chi's drawing is the only without the greetings, I guess he was upset with me) Then I showed them the graffiti stuff and they were all perplexed seeing that shit, Frank asked me if I was busted and stuff cause he was a 'graffer' and he was busted a lot. Stef was damn serious seeing that and they all just loved. Then I said 'Chino, about the defmorphations I don't know if you guys gonna approve that...' then he 'ohh, now I wanna see that shit!' So I showed them some printings of my defmorphaionsI wasn't expecting for what happening...Chino was laughing so much that he couldn't even breathe, Abe was joking with Chi's face, Stef was like 'what's this shit?!' Chi was just laughing at Stef's face. And Frank was always asking me 'hey man how did you made these?' Then Chino grabbed the Chi vs. Frank morphation and said 'hey this one looks like a chick with a beard...hey Stef we gotta make some shirts out of these!' They were so happy seeing that. And then I asked Chino if I could make some questions and record that. He said 'that's fine man!' So I recorded it. I asked some stuff like song meanings, new projects and I even asked him if he could give me a welcome message for my website and he agreed! So I'm hopping to put it right here. After we end this 'interview' (i'll put it later) I asked Abe and Stef for a song, and that was tha shit! Stef was opening his mouth but nothing was comin out, and Abe was with food all around his body and all he could say was 'Yeahhhhhh! Oohhhh! Ahhhhhhhhhh!' So I said that was enough and I turned off my tape recorder. And I asked for one last thing...I wanted a pic of everyone's tattoos. And they agreed with it. I took pics at every tattoos, Frank is the clean one, he doesn't have tattoos. Then me and Chino we went backdoors and I got scared cause when he opened the door there was hundred of fans waiting for the band. I thought I was already alone but fuck no! Hundreds and hundreds of crazy fans out there! So Chino said goodbye to me till March or June in Portugal and he went the fans fence and started to sign stuff. I saw a little space in the fence and I needed to rest so I sat there but one second after that I just looked back and hundreds of girls were coming at me and then they all grabbed me and they were like 'mi firma! mi firma' they were asking me to sign their stuff and was saying in portuguese that I wasn't from the Deftones but they don't listened to me and I hardly could escape from there, so I signed 4 girls' tickets then I looked to my left side and saw Chino doing the same and I though 'oh he's gonna get pissed off if he sees me doing this' so I found a way to escape to those crazy girls and went backstage again, and stayed there talking with Chi. After they all signed fans bodies, underwear, faces... I said goodbye to the biggest band in the world, and wished to see them again next year. When the driver was about to drive them to the hotel, I guess it was Chino (because of the voice) cause it was so dark, gave me a Rock am See free pass and the official Deftones European Tour Book. I guess they all loved the time we spent backstage as I loved it too. Thanks guys!!!
