Deftones @ Lowlands Festival 25/08/2000 - Holland Diary Entry from Cypress Hill's B-Real Comin into Holland we were all kinda disappointed, only because we had planned to come into Amsterdam right after our show at Lowlands. But to our dismay, our hotel was actually 2 hours away from Amsterdam and all if its glorious coffee shops, sad but true. But the show was incredible. We caught up with Chino from the Deftones early. Sen Dogıs band SX10 was performing on the same stage as the Deftones were, so Bobo and I went to check out there show. I wanted to get some good shot to post on the site. As we were walkin in the back stage area we ran into Chino and Abe. Stef, my Kush partner hadnıt gotten to the gig. So after we checked out Senıs set which was a very good set Chino, Bobo, and Abe, and I headed to our side where we were going to be doin our show. It was really early so we had much time to get a lil loaded. Right when we got to our dressing room, Chino immediately asked ³So whereıs the Vodka?² And I said, ³right in the fuckin corner letıs get it started². So as were starting the head correction, one of the guyıs from Blink 182 comes up and starts hangin out with us. We were all talking about how they should have put all three of our band on the same stage. Because the Deftones were on the second stage, while Blink and Cypress was on stage one. But it all worked out, cuz we got to see Blinkıs set even though Iım not into their shit too much I can appreciate a good show. They rocked it. For a minute I was lil nervous. I thought damn! We have to follow that. All the while I had a fuckin Sony rep buggin the shit out of me to do some fuckin interview. Man they never stop. But I set his ass straight. He kept hounding me, so I to be the asshole for once in a long time. He comes up for the last time askin me ³can we go now?² After I had made it clear I was going to finish watching the show. So I got rude on his ass and told him ³No!!!!!!! When they are done, now leave me alone or I wonıt do it at all. So he left me alone for a while. (hehe) There was like 30,000 people in the big tent buggin out hard to Blinkıs shit, and we had to top that. Damn, the pressure. After the were finished, we headed back to our dressing room again where Stef from the Deftones was waiting on me with a big fat fuckin joint of the Green Houseıs finest herb. It was a great reunion. I hadnıt seen them since the show in Jacksonville. Theyıve been doin shows with Bizkit out here, so it was good to finally run into our partners in crime. As we were chillin before we were to go on, Stef pulls out a bag of E that someone from Hightimes gave him. Chino, Bobo, and Stef had already taken some so they were poking at me to take some and complete the circle. And form the E brothers. So I thought about it for a second, took in the fact that Iıve only done it once before with the Ex-lady Carmen, and I said, ³fuck it, lets handle it. So by the time we went on stage to do the Cypress set we were all feelin good. At least the four of us were. They show was off the hook, it was better than I thought it was gonna be. Any worry I had about being able to top Blink quickly faded as we kept playin. We had a more powerful response from the crowd than they did. And if you had seen the crowd youıd think shit! How can you top that crazy shit? But we did. My voice sounded like I had swallowed a cheese grater but as it warmed up it started sound a lil decent. I was overwhelming the response we had gotten and I felt really good. Holland's always live and we always see the same friends that we made thru out the years weıve been comin here. And they always look out for us. Like my man Mark that tattoos at Hanky Pankyıs in the Redlight District in Amsterdam. And this other dude whose name escapes me, works at the place called the Grey Area. He always kicks us down herb. And our friends at the Green House always hook us up as well. Peace to all of them. Oh before I forget I gotta give props to Chino for performing Rock Super Star with us at the festival. When he came on people went crazy. He sung the whole song with us. It came out dope and it was a good surprise to all our mutual fans. So like I was getting to, after our set we headed over to the Deftones side to watch them deliver one of the dopest shows Iıve seen in a long time. Limps show was good but so was the Deftones. They are my favorite rock band right now. They have been for a while, it good to see them rippin shows. Chino at one point went all the way out deep in the crowd. People were lovin it. I was front row checkin shit out so I didnıt miss a thing. The whole band is just dope. Eventually I want to get a tour with them goin on. Keep your fingers crossed. So after their show, we started correcting the head once again. But this time I was introduced to something I had never seen or smoke before. I guess today was a day of new experiences. Stef introduces me to this guy who invented or so he say the art of rollin weed with hash as the actually skin you roll the weed with. Iıll explain a lil further. You see, he makeıs the hash, the some how he flattens out, the rolls it like dough into a shape of a rollin paper. Then you heat the hash up paper by breathin on it for a while cuz it might be a lil stiff, then when it get a lil softer you put the weed in the roll it up. Let me tell you the high is strong like a fuckin donkey kick. It knocked us all on our asses. It was the highest time I had in a long time. I will never forget this day, it started shitty but it turned out well. We came with no herb and left with an abundance. And we didnıt even have to go to the Redlight District. Thanks to Steff for hookin shit up. Peace to all those in attendance. Peace and on the next one. by B Real (thanks to Sly) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Where: The Lowlands festival, Holland (August 25th, 2000) The Lowlands festival is a 3-day festival in Holland (near Amsterdam). The first day (friday) at the Dommelsch stage: DEFTONES They played for about an hour and my god, they rocked.... Probably the best act of this festival. Starting with Feiticeira the crowd went crazy. Especially the white pony songs gave me the creeps. Like the adrenaline is driving through your body with 120 miles/hour. Seriously. The songs from around the fur just blew everyone away. I've never seen so many people jumping up and down. The lights were pretty cool by the way...kinda mysterious. I have to mention '7 words'. I always considered 7 words to be 'another' deftones song. Cool but not my favorite or something. Well, that changed after today. They played this song so damn cool. With the stop in the middle. Amazing! Conclusion: one of the best performances I've ever seen, if not 'the' best. Playlist: - Feiticeira - Change - Be quite and drive - My own summer - knife party - bored - 7words - digital bath - Lotion - nosebleed (that's what I remember...) By Gerard van der Voort
