DEFTONES @ Estadio Alvalade, Lisbon - Portugal (May 29th 2003)
This was my 5th Deftones show, and once again they didn't disappoint
the Portuguese crowd. The band entered the stage in a different way.
They all entered at the same time, Chino picked up the microphone and
greeted the crowd (about 20,000 fans). The show started off with
"Feiticeira", no one was expecting that, but that's what happened.
"Elite" came next, and for someone like me, who is used to see them
opening up with other songs, that was such a nice surprise.
They rarely play this one live. During "My Own Summer" Chino was in
the crowd and asked if the fans were ok, and now I start to think that
he does that on purpose, to show fans that a Deftones concert isn't a
battle ground or something like that. The news songs came right after
BQAD; "Hexagram", "Minerva" and "Bloody Cape" were just splendid. After
"Around the Fur" Chino silenced the crowd and then said "I'm leaving the
stage", everybody was like 'what tha fuck' and then he finished saying
"The stage is for losers. I'm a winner." and he jumped off the stage.
"Lotion" started. Some fan gave Chino a hair-band from the show's promoters.
Chino used it as a blindfold all the way till the end of "Lotion".
Are you imagining Chino singing "Lotion" in the crowd with a blindfold?
Well that's what happened. Chino climbed up the stage and then Stef
started "Root" and Chino, once again, put the blindfold and sang all
fuckin "Root" with that blindfold. Dancing and rocking like if he had
nothing covering his eyes. He kept that blindfold until "Engine #9".
"Headup" came right after it, and a lucky bastard got the chance to
sing the last part of this song on stage. Chino was completely off the
hook this night, Stef and Chi were like always, headbanging. I could
hardly see the rest of the band since this concert was played in a huge
football stadium. Before they ended up the show "Battle-axe" was played,
and in my opinion this was my favourite one, it sounds amazing live.
The show ended up with "7 Words", I only had the time to see half of it,
since the backstage was waiting for me.
