live @ Lisbon, Coliseum – 26th February 2001 Six months after their last performance here in Portugal, the Deftones showed once again that they are definitely the best live band in the whole world. Two concerts were scheduled and this was the first one. Chino went up on stage singing “Bored” in a slow motion way…word after word… ”Hear…me…spit…” The Coliseum was so packed in and everyone was singing heavenly…but when Chino screamed: “sun!”…Oh my God!!! Hundreds of bodies were flying above my head, thousands of souls were pushing me backwards…Physically I wasn’t prepared I have to admit, I’ve been really tired lately, but I had to be there…All I remember is that they played “Engine #9” and “Around the Fur” and during this song I couldn’t even breathe…Chino tried to help us out but he knew if he did that, all those fans would "eat" him. Suddenly I fell along with 10 guys or something like that, Chino didn’t sing in that part he was worried and he asked if the crowd was ok…everyone said “yeah!” - fuck no! We were not ok! I never felt like that, I swear, and I’ve been in lots of front rows. I almost fainted and I remember that I held on the wire of his mic. I know that I held that really badly to try not to fall, Chino asked if the front row was ok, I said “no”…but I don’t know what he thought cause after I said “no” he started like that “Speak I don’t get it…” part…so people got nuts again. I asked everyone who were beside me to help me out but no one did. Then one guy decided to help me out, he grabbed my right foot and elevated me and I crowd-surfed too, otherwise I wouldn’t reach the security zone. To that guy: you don’t know me and I don’t know you, but you kinda saved my life, and I mean it! Much thanks fella! The
Deftones played “Feiticeira” and I just didn’t see, cause I was
tired as hell. I had to breathe. So after “Feiticeira”, I heard Stef
playing “Back to School” and that gave me such energy…I got up
really quickly and I don’t know how I did but I entered the VIP’s
skybox…and shit! That’s the best place to see a concert. I was right
above the band, I could see everything, even Stef’s setlist and
Frank’s mixing table. From this moment I enjoyed the whole concert and
that was enjoying during an hour and a half cause they played something
like eighteen songs. I took some neat pics thanks to some guys who were
in this same skybox… Chino was singing just great, no laryngitis! One song he was on stage the other one he was in the crowd, he didn’t dive though. There was one time, I think it was during “Headup” that he went into the crowd and fans were asphyxiating him so much even guys from the sitting rows were flying just to touch his face or hair, that was something unbelievable. I think that he didn’t dive in Lisbon cause this was a “hungry crowd”. Every time he was near them he had to be helped out by their tour manager – Steven Kidd – otherwise something really bad could have happened. I do understand these “hungry fans” cause Chino is their idol or something like that, and they really want to touch him, but they have to understand that he’s not a Teletubbie or a Pikatchu. He’s a man, and scratching his face, pulling his hair and grabbing his neck will not turn him in a happier person, try to smile at his face I bet with you that he will be a happier person. However it was a great show! The best I had seen till the day after… LISBON SETLIST # BQAD, Lotion, Digital Bath, Teenager, Root, Headup, Unknown (Stef played it alone), 7 Words (Say It Ain't So). by Nuno Rolinho
