Deftones @ "Memorial Auditorium" Kansas City, MO - U.S.A. 06 Dec 2003 www.deftonesworld.com So this was the night I have been waiting for for months on end, three of my very favorite bands all united under one roof. We made the three hour drive and arrived at about 5:45. Thursday is probably my favorite band and Deftones is top 5 easily, and put on the best live show and Thrice is amazing as well, put on one of the best shows ever.....heres my band by band review..... Thursday-4th Time-BY FAR the best time Ive seen them. Geoff's vocals were actually really close to perfect. They didnt have the energy they usually do, it was their last night on the tour. I screamed with Geoff tons he kept giving me the mic seeing as I was the only one there going insane on the rail, however more people were singing along than I expected. Despite the really really short set time they were amazing, and I thought they wouldnt be topped. SET LIST For The Workforce. Drowning. Paris In Flames Understanding Between Rapture and Rupture Division Street Jet Black New Year Thrice-7th Time-Opposite of Thursday, definetly the worst time Ive seen them. Not just the dissapointing set list but Dustin fucked up like 4 times, afterwards at the meet and greet (more at the bottom) they apologized tons but it was alright I know how amazing they are from previous performances but they were still awesome, Ive never seen "Paper Tigers" live so that was highlight as was "Deadbolt" as always but It just didnt feel like a Thrice show without "To Awake and Avenge The Dead", ehh playign Stare at the Sun over that MEH. SET LIST Under A Killing Moon Sillhoutte Kill Me Quickly Stare at the Sun Abolition Of Man Paper Tigers Deadbolt Cold Cash, Colder Hearts Deftones-3rd Time-HOLY SHIT. Ive never seen them indoors and I must say this was by far the best performance I HAVE EVER seen. I cant see why anyone can complain about Deftones live, Ive heard negative things about Chino's voice lately but it was perfect, the whole set was perfect. Words cant describe how great they were. They played BQAD, Digital Bath, Feiteciera, and Nosebleed right in a row, that was the best 4 song strecth ever. It was insane at times of course and just orgasmic and overwhelming at others. At the end I was like one person away from Chino and he handed me his set list which was awesome. Every song was a highlight, it was absolutley perfect, Im seriously speechless. SET LIST Minerva Hexagram My Own Summer Be Quiet and Drive Digital Bath Feitiera Nosebleed Mascara Around The Fur Lotion Death Blow Bloody Cape Headup ------ Change / Lucky You Bored 7 Words Ok then came afterwards...I had a Thrice backstage pass for being on the "Thrice Alliance" however I wasnt that excited to meet them since I have 4 times already but I was dying to meet Thursday...I did get to talk to Tucker and Steve for 30 minutes before Thrice came out...awesome awesome guys...told me in February-April AFI/THURSDAY tour and then after that headlining (prob w/ Death By Stereo) thenWarped Tour. Then Thrice came out and me, my friend and 4 other people got to ahng out with them for 2 HOURS. It was awesome, we talked abut everything.... heres tour news----in March when they get back from Europe THRICE/POISON THE WELL/DARKEST HOUR will hit the road for 4 weeks in places that hold less than 1,000 people man that will be awesome, including an OKC date...this tour is to warm up for their summer tour with DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL, THE GET UP KIDS, and DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE. Man Thrice is going to sound extreme there, oh well not the best tour but not bad.....so thats about it.. xkee60x@excite.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know if anyone remembers my review this past summer of the Sanitarium show in St. Louis. It was pretty nasty on my part, because I was frustrated with the deftones performance. The show was short and the deftones didn't seem like they wanted to be there anyway. I read every review that is posted on this site, and I can't help but notice that half of the reviews are written by some 16 year old who said it was the best concert they have ever seen, just because Chino looked at them, or because Chi signed their CD cover. Its very confusing when I read reviews because some people say the shows are great, and others say they are terrible. Just like any other presentation of art, it just a matter of interpretation. So I was going into the Kansas City show on December. 12, expecting a mediocre show at best. After St. Louis I was hoping the Deftones wouldn't let me down. I can honestly tell you, this was by far the best show I have seen in years. Everything about the show was top notch. I have seen lots of concerts over the years, and sitting here at my desk all day gives me plenty of time to roam the net and look for new music. But the Deftones have totally redeemed themselves, at least in my eyes. Yes they might be a little thicker that they used to be 5 years ago...so what? If that's what you basing your judgment on, then maybe you should wait to see what you look like after your 30. Chino screams were perfect, every high note was hit with perfection. Nobody seemed drunk or on drugs, and the sound was great. The show was sold out or close to it, and the pits were huge. It was good to see all the people rush the floor when the lights went down, it reminded me of being in high school, and thinking I was some big rebel running past security. Anyway, the show was by far the best deftones show I have seen, absolutely stunning. The set list was pretty standard, so I won't give it to you. Some highlights were Bloody Cape, and one of my all time favorites, nosebleed. So anybody debating whether or not to go see them, please do, it was the best 30 dollars I have spent all year, well I should say 40 bucks if you count the cab ride home. Sorry if I offended any 16 year olds, but just because you go to touch Chino's arm, doesn't make it a great show... Thanks, Nick
