DEFTONES @ 30 Oct 2004
"Webster Theatre" Hartford, CT - USA
www.deftonesworld.com
I drove down from Beantown to see the Deftones @
Webster Theatre, CT. Well worth the miles I put on my
lease!
This was only my second time seeing them live and I
must say it was the best live performance I have ever witnessed.
But before I give props to Deftones I will say this....Dredg was
impressive. The drummer was off the hook and the vocals were tight.
They had a real good sound in all. Just before their last song the
Deftones came on stage to salute the band.
Chi held up a brew and acknowledged the crowd
( eveybody went crazy ). Deftones opened up w/
Feticeira and the everyone went nutz!
At one point during a break in the action Chino was
messing with Abe and Chino acted like he was going to
jump over is drumset and
Chino ended up bustin' his ass after he stepped on the
monitor speaker. I don't think the fall was staged
because the speaker had a big dent in it.
That was funy shit!!! Hexagram was tight and so was
Nosebleed. The Cure cover was done nicely and it was a
good breather for the crowd.
Steph a had a cool solo just before the encore.
Chino's vocals were tight and the light show was cool
through the whole show.
As far as I could tell there were only a couple of
mistakes ( very minor )
...a dead gap during My Own Summer and at the end of
Bloody Cape....Steph kept playing a little after the
band stopped ( both were hardly noticeable )
Although it was a treat to hear Rx Queen Minus
Blindfold and Rickets I was kind of bummed they didn't
play One Weak, Knife Party, Elite and BQAD.
Especially Elite because I think Steph totally rips it
with the guitar play. But I guess there's only so many
songs you can play in a setlist.
Can't wait for the new material and the next tour.
Keep supporting the best band in the world
'yall...PEACE!
DunnPedro.

Just got back from the last stop of the tour. The show was incredible as always,
the setlist was pretty much identical as it has been the last few dates. It seemed
like they oversold the show, there was barely any room to walk anywhere, and the crowd
was intense. To anyone familiar with the Hartford area, the Webster Theater is
located in the f**king ghetto!! I didn't realize this until after when we were
waiting by the tourbus for the band to come out. Noticed lots of gang member looking
dudes walking around in groups, looking like they didn't like the 20 or so of us
hanging around in thier neighborhood. Got lots of dirty looks, watched a couple of
cars get breaked into, and my buddy sam noticed them throwing rocks at our direction!
Anyway, we ended up getting the hell oughta there before we got killed, but infortunately
before the band came out which really sucked. But I did make it up to the front row
during the show in front of Chi and got a lot of awesome pictures of him and Chino.
Heres the setlist in just about exact order.
1.) Feit.
2.) Change
3.) My Own Summer
4.) Around the Fur
5.) Rickets (never heard that live before)
6.) Hexagram
7.) If Only Tonight We Could Sleep
8.) RX Queen (first time too)
9.) Nosebleed
10.) Minus Blindfold
11.) Bored
12.) Engine No. 9 (with wicked)
13.) Root (fucking awesome!!)
14.) 7 Words.
Encore:
15.) Minerva
16.) Bloody Cape
- I was kind of hoping they might have played more songs, or played some different
songs because of it being the last show, but they didn't. Interesting how they played
6 Adrenaline songs in a row! During the encore, Stef stayed out like he always does, smoking
butt after butt. The band was cool during the show, Chino was laying on the stage, jumping
around, going into the crowd. And he and Abe did thier little rap solo "bitches ain't shit
but hoes and tricks" Stef was laughing his ass off at this, and chain smoked throughout the
whole show. This was my 5th time seeing them, can't wait for the upcoming tour for the new CD.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, the trip from three locations in Massachusetts to Hartford, CT began
around 2:30. Two of my friends (Rob, Brandy) and I "officially" left at
about 4:30 and arrived at 6:30. After about twenty minutes we knew something
was wrong with the directions because we could not find Webster Street. We
ended up asking a Mini-Mart guy and he said that it was torn down but that
the Webster Theater was right near us. We parked and got in line by 7:00.
The Webster Theater has some interesting rules and I guess there is a 21+
line and an under 21 line. Brandy and I went over there. I am not sure what
the other people did but we went into a smaller club. Well, that was all
right.I guess, Rob ended up coming with us (and still beat the system
getting his wristband to drink). A little local band came on that was pretty
mediocre, but whatever.
The little holding room we were in finally opened up around 8:05 and we made
our way in. The actual place was pretty small, definitely comparable to the
Palladium in Worcester. The place has a dedicated section for drinkers and
no one with a beer can get out of there. Although it is kind of weird, it
was nice knowing there was no way I was going to get beer spilled on me.
Smoking is also not allowed, so it was pretty strict on rules. Whatever, not
smelling like smoke does not really bother me either.
The merchandise was nothing special; the only shirt I kind of liked was not
on sale. I saw a couple of the new flats taped on the wall and a decently
sized banner up also (I only ended up getting two different flats). Dredg came
on around five past 9:00 and sounded very good. I only knew Dredg
by a song or two and heard that they were terrible live but I really enjoyed
it. Although by three songs you pretty much know who they are and what they
are like, they put a lot of passion into their show. Their drummer beat the
hell out of his drums and the singer really reminded me of low-key Daryl
from Glassjaw with some of his on stage movements. Before their last song,
the Deftones all came out and gave them drinks and everyone was yelling and
smiling. Good times.
Okay, the Deftones. They came on at about 10:20. At first the guitar was
really quiet, but it was turned up before the end of Feiticeira. The set
list was (I believe this is in the correct order):
Feiticeira
Change (in the house of flies)
My Own Summer (shove it)
Hexagram
Nosebleed
Around the Fur
Rickets
If Only Tonight We Could Sleep
RX Queen
Minus Blindfold
Root
7 Words
Engine No. 9 (with Wicked rap)
Bored
- - encore - -
Minerva
Bloody Cape
My dilemma was this: the band sounded better than almost any recording I
have heard and both shows I previously attended but the set list did not
feel complete (only sixteen songs, usually there was one or two more).
Because I have only seen them twice, there were a few songs I had not seen
live (Minus Blindfold, Rickets, RX Queen, Nosebleed, Engine No. 9 and of
course, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep) and that was awesome, but I read in
past reviews of this tour that they playing Damone, MX, Can't Even Breathe,
Knife Prty and even Teenager at one show. I was really looking forward to
hearing Damone and Knife Prty (I would say Teenager too, but I had a feeling
they would not play it again). MX and Can't Even Breathe would have been
spectacular also. Oh well, life goes on. Once again, no new songs. I was
almost positive that because it was the last night of the tour, there would
be one but that did not happen. I am also surprised they did not play
Digital Bath nor Be Quiet and Drive (far away) because they practically
always do.
The best songs of the night were Minus Blindfold, Root, Rickets, Hexagram
and If Only Tonight We Could Sleep. As I said, every song was awesome, but
those were some of the highlights. Some people around me looked like they
had no idea what was going on when some of the Adrenaline songs came on
which is a shame. The band was great as always, but Chino was surprisingly
good. He hit almost every high note (end of Root, Bored chorus,
Minerva..etc) and if he did not have it in him, he had a scream that would
make you forget all about that high note.
The band, as always, was funny as hell. Chino and Abe were going at it the
whole night. At one point, Chi thanked the crowd and said "if it wasn't for
you, none of this would be happening right now so give yourself a round of
applause" and Chino came back with "of course, without Chi Cheng, none of
this would be happening either.so give Chi a round of applause too." All in
all, it was a great show that I am glad I attended despite the lack of new
songs and some of the ones they played earlier in the tour.

All I can say is WOW!!!!, this show was absollutley incredible. This was my
third time seeing the deftones and hands down the best. The show was at the
Webster Theater in Hartford, CT, practically in my backyard which made it
all the more better. Smaller venue, about 1200 people, and it was sold out,
which was awesome for the deftones cause we all know they deserve it.
The opening band Dredg impressed me very much. I knew nothing of the band
before seeing them on this tour. They reminded me slightly of Incubus, as
the lead singers vocals crooned over a mix of hip hop and hardcore beats.
Alot of ambient textures and nu-wave type guitar riffs. Very reminiscent of
Interpol. All in all a soid performance. They were very well received by the
crowd and very appreciative too. They are going on tour with Chevelle soon,
I highly reccommend you check out the show. The show was sponsered by Jim
Bean, so, during Dredg's set the deftones came out to do a shot with them.
The place erupted, you could see by the look on Chino's face that he was
definitely drunk, but lookin' at the crowd like "you better expect to get
your socks blown off tonight!!!"
And Chino and the boys certainly lived up to this promise. The show was
absolutley awesome!!!! Props to the crowd too. They were wild, but
thankfully no meat head idiots who just wanted to hurt people. Everyone you
could tell was a true deftones fan and was there to appreciate the music.
Chino was in all his glory. Tube socks, converse all stars, and shorts
sagged down to his knees practically, he was all over the stage. Crowd
interaction was phenominal too. He came out into the crowd, about 2 ft from
me for Hexagram. Made sure that all sides of the audience were into the
show. The rest of the band was tight too, Steph was high as usual, and Chi
was solid, abe and frank were in sync the whole night. Chino sang a little
bit from atop the speakers which was cool too. Set list was ok. I wouldn't
say great but good none the less. it went something like this
*not in correct order*
Feitecera
Change
Shove it
Hexagram
Around the Fur
Rickets
Minus Blindfold
Nosebleed
Bored
If Only Tonight We Could Sleep
RX Queen
Root
7 Words
Engine #9 (with rap from Wicked)
Encore:
Minerva
Bloody Cape
BQAD (not played)
Afterward about 20 of us waited around to meet the band, after about an hour
and a half Chino finally came out to talk to the crowd. All i have to say is
this guy is the nicest rock star i've ever met. I told him that, saying
simply "thanks for being cool, cuase most rock stars aren't like that" . He
took the time to sign everyone's stuff and take pictures with everyone. He
even just talked to kids about their bands, and about recording, and old
tours. He seriously is wicked nice and cares about his fans. He looked good,
looked like he slimmed down a little bit, cut his hair too. Just an all
around cool character and a wicked appreciative guy. Great show, props to
chino and the boys for rockin out. Im sending some pictures within the week
from the show

Show was great. Chino was the most focused on singing well that I have ever seen...it was
like they were taping last night's show for a dvd release...that's how straight to the
records they played.
My Own Summer took the energy of the pit and threw it on it's ass...basically forcing the
entire crowd into one large swirling pit. that was Insane...And outside of Change and
Bloody Cape...the highlight as far as Chino's energy level.
Birthmark and rx Queen were really nice to hear at a show, they sounded great...Stef's rift
on Bored was insane...it was probably the one sound that was really distinct and sharp during
the whole show (overall the sound level was great...but it was tough to make out different
notes...you almost had to rely on Chino's singing to orientate yourself at times)
Overall...it was sad not to hear Korea or Damone (which they had apparently been playing)
but everything they played was really tight, focused...almost like a prep for recording their
new album (Nuno..do you know where in CT they're recording with bob Ezrin?...any projected
team sleep release date from maverick?).
Oh, by the way, dredg sucks...the kid in the boston uniform with a ponytail is useless and
should not be allowed into shows where fans want to see a good show. Go to a Staind concert
and act Like That...don't Act Like a dork at a Deftones show. Thanks.
Nuno, your site f'ing rules...thanks for keeping that so updated and fresh. My friends and I
thank you countless times.
Peace,
Skee

i live in boston mass, it was a 3 hour drive there, 3 hours back, 257 miles.
got there at about 4, as we got out of our cars we saw there bus pull up on the sidewalk.
there were about 9 people not including us there already. we were hacking waiting for someone
to come out of the bus when chino came out with a very hot thin model type looking girl with
a short skirt, hot stuff. as he walked by about 10 yards away i said with a girlish voice
whats up chino, he looked at me and ACKNOWLEDGED ME haha sorry, and said whats up then walked
in. we gave each member a greeting as they passed by. steph passed by quite a few times so one
of the times i got him to sign my ticket which was awesome.
we get in, were at the bar. i never heard dredg but they were very good, i liked them. then
deftones came out after one of there songs with a staff member holding a tray with shots for
each member of dredg and chino said its a cheers for their last show together then they left.
this guy dressed up as a handicap with a broken foot and crutches came out and hyped up the
crowd. then a radio guy from w/e radio station was throwing deftones jim bean tour shirts
and i cought one, an interception from the girl next to me muahaha but she caught one after
so it was all good.
when tones came on they were awesome no doubt. chinos timing on his vocals were off quite a
bit and struggled alot with choruss from 7 words, hexagram, you get the point. but it was a
sick show, dont remember the order of the set but i was dissapointed they didnt play knife
prty, damone, battleaxe, or lotion.
at one point my friend (who has gone through 3 surgeries on his arms because of motocross
accidents over the course of the last year) was pulled from the crowd, so jumped out to see
how he was MIND YOU I WAS RESTING ON THE BAR AND I GAVE IT UP TO SEE IF HE WAS OK talk about
a friend huh. he was fine just exhausted from the pushing and the heat his arms were fine so
it was cool, i got him a water and said later.
then i fought through about 2 to 3 songs before i finally got back to the very same spot on
the bar next to my friend evan and this cool deftones chic we met.
by that time they were playing bloody cape and then it was over....man...........

a shirt it was worth it.

Dredge opened up with a great set, the crowd really got into the band
although I don't believe many had heard of them before. The Deftones came out before
Dredge's final song and treated the guys with a tray of drinks. After
exchanging hugs and greetings Dredge finished their set. Dredge had a great complex
mix of Keith Caputo(LOA)style singing, frantic drumming, sludgey base playing
and very U2"Edge" guitar stylings.
The Deftones set was intense. At one point Chino leaped off the stack of
speakers and rolled across the stage before erupting into a chorus. The guys
playfully battled back and forth amongst themselves throughout the show and really
entertained the crowd. Chino broke into a few suprising songs during the show
including "Wicked" during a chorus, which nearly tore down the house. Another
interesting song was a departure from the rest of the set, a middle eastern
themed song which included a side musician. Unfortunately I couldn't identify
the song. The lighting and sound was great at the Webster. The Deftone's clearly
demonstrated a beautiful mix of raw energy and intensity throughout the set.
Song after song erupted and sounded as great as the first time I had heard it.
Unlike acts like Korn and Metallica, the Deftones never get too comfortable
or formulaic. They left the crowd sweaty, excited and energized for the new
record in the Spring. The "Crowd Went Wild"!!! -vacmir1@aol.com

Hey guys, Hartford was amazing!! Not much different from the rest of the tour, but they threw
in a ton of rarities!
Possible Setlist, feel free to correct me:
Feiticeira
Change
My Own Summer
Hexagram
Around the Fur
Rickets
Nosebleed
RX Queen
Minus Blindfold
If Only Tonight We Could Sleep (Cure cover)
Engine No. 9 (w/ Wicked)
Bored
Root
7 Words
Minverva
Bloody Cape
Notes of Interest:
- the deftones came out during Dredg's set and shared a drink/shots with them, celebrating the
end of the tour. They seem to really like each other and were all smiling/laughing/hugging for
a few minutes. The crowd went WILD during this event, it was unreal!
- the deftones were really on last night. the vocals were way up there. chino's screaming was
very present and he hit all his notes. much less lyric-skipping than last year's tour. as always,
stef, chi, abe, and frank were tight as hell.
- abe and chino would collaborate for small solos in between songs and in the middle of songs
at times. usually abe would provide a beat and chino would start rapping and see if anyone knew
what he was singing...most people looked confused hehe
- my own summer was INSANE! after the break in the song, chino went crazy and flipped out for
the rest of the song...doing his dance and screaming sooo loudly, it was great!
- chino only got into the crowd once, during hexagram, which sounded amazing
- the band seemed really happy together. they were smiling the whole night and posing for
photographers. chino and abe would banter back and forth and chi would chime in. they seemed
really happy to be on stage
- they did not play "clint eastwood" or "say it ain't so" during bored or seven words, respectively
- rx queen sounded really cool, but a bit different than the album version. the steel drum
sound was not there
- there was a guy with a digital minicam filiming some of the show in front of the barricade;
there was also a guy filming from the sound board in the crowd...dvd anyone?
- nothing new was played except "if only tonight we could sleep," the cure cover. nobody
seemed to know what this song was
- the crowd at the show was really cool; not too many knuckleheads looking to hurt people.
i think most people were there for the music, and everyone seemed legitimately excited to
be at the show!
- i met chi w/ his wife to the side of the stage during dredg. he was really nice and all
smiles. i quickly told him how excited i was to be seeing the deftones, and was very appreciative
and in good spirits
- they had some new merch for the tour...nothing too special, just some t-shirts. one, which i
bought, had a red rooster and the word "deftones" underneath. the tour t-shirt had two pistols
on it w/ the dates on the back. the font was the same western font as the red "giddy-up" t-shirt
General Comments:
This was my third time seeing the deftones ( 1. at summer sanitarium, 2. in worcester last year
w/ denali/ptw). I really enjoyed the show and loved the setlist. Although it was missing a few
classics (BQAD, Headup, Digital Bath), it made up for w/ RX Queen, Minus Blindfold, Rickets
(which was sick!), Engine no. 9 with Wicked, 7 Words, and IOTWCS. This was probably my
favorite time seeing them b/c they seemd so precise, sharp, and aware of their performance
and musicianship. I think this is mainly due to their apparent sober state. It was great
seeing them so focused and impassioned!
I'm sad to say however, that butterflies did not fill my stomach this time around. I distinctly
remember feeling sooo excited before the deftones took the stage in Worcester, however this time
I didn't quite feel that way...can anyone relate? i hope i'm not "getting used" to seeing the
deftones live...
However, the Deftones are undoubtedly my favorite band, and I'm soo glad I drove from Boston to
see them! I would certainly do it again, I just wish the excitement that I once felt was still there.
