DEFTONES REVIEW - FARGO, ND - MARCH 21st -- Chris Hart This was my first time going to a Deftones concert and it was well worth the wait. I've been a fan for the longest time and finally I had the opportunity to get out and see my favorite band play. As far as the rest of the concert went, it was fairly good. Dredg, As I Lay Dying, Atreyu, Story of the Year and Thrice played extremely well and the crowd took well to all of them. However, bar none - the Deftones were the most liked and most anticipated band of the evening. After the Steel Drum Corps, fans in the Fargo Civic Center started chanting, "Deftones, Deftones, Deftones!" and kept chanting until they appeared on stage and when Chino came out in his flanel, long-sleeved red shirt; the crowd went nuts and started chanting, "Chino, Chino, Chino!" The atmosphere was amazing, and the Deftones put on a hell of a show. I don't know the exact set order, but they started off the show with Street Carp, vwhich led into My Own Summer, and that's when people started going extremely crazy. After My Own Summer, Feiticeira was next on the bill and the whole crowd road "Soon I'll let you go!" along with Chino. After that, the Deftones played one of their newer songs, which was extremely interesting and was a mix of funky keyboards and a twang-like guitar. Very soft for most of the song, but it ended with a harsh explosion at the end. After the song, Chinovtried to play to the crowd, talking about how the Deftones hadn't been to Fargo in years. He reflected upon when they were young and a time they played at the Fargo Dome. Chino cracked a joke, stating how Abe, Stef and himself were in their teens and Chi was thirty. That helped settle the mood with the crowd for a while. After the joke, Chino ran up to the crowd and low and behold -- Hexagram was next on this list. Possibly the highlight of the night, the crowd responded so well to it and the performance was flawless. After that, I cannot remember the exact order -- but I believe RX Queen was next, in which the Steel Drum Corps joined them and put on an interesting ensemble of drumming to compliment Abe. The Deftones switch backed to Around the Fur for a while and played the title track and then Be Quiet and Drive. Those were the two songs I was most interested in hearing and well, they played them. Like I said, not too sure but they did play Bloody Cape, which everyone got into as well. I was surprised how much old stuff they played, as the final three songs I remember were Nosebleed, Seven Words and Minus Blindold -- which was extremely surprising -- I hardly see that on setlists in other reviews ever; but I'm not too sure if I'm right on that one -- but that's what it sounded like. I was really tired and I did too much crowd surfing to remember exactly how it went. I'm not sure how long they were on stage (as the stage was absolutely pathetic in my opinion, I bet they felt the same) but I'm fairly certain it was for a little more than an hour. You hear a lot about how the Deftones either are off and on from venue to venue, but I'd have to say they played their hearts out for the crowd here in Fargo. They were really appreciative of those who showed up and were thankful for the opportunity to play here; and Chino stated how fun it was to go out on the town. [I had a few friends who saw them at the VFW and a few clubs, so I think Chino was referring to that.] As soon as the last song ended, Abe threw his sticks out into the crowd and I dove in hopes to get it, it was a mad scramble, but I wasn't able to get one. However, my friend did and I'm now in the process of purchasing it from him. So in conclusion, the Deftones put on a hell of a show for the small, intimate setting at the Fargo Civic Center. My final thoughts are that they only played two songs from self-titled and they played alot of their older material. Perhaps it was a gift to the fans around here who don't usually have the privelege to see them, and in my opinion it's one of the better setlists I've came along by. I hope to see the Deftones again on this tour.
