deftones @ download fest 2003, donnington UK May 30th 2003 www.deftonesworld.com I made the trip all the way from london to sunny nottinghamshire for this one and god it was worth it. This was my third time seeing the deftones and this was by far their tightest performance yet. Ministry finished their set and a half an hour wait ensued for the tones to take the stage. Finally they came on and opened with feiteceira and played 11 songs in total. The setlist is as follows Feiteceira Shove It BQAD Hexagram Minerva (Before which Chino did his usual mini cover of 50 Cent's in the Club) ATF Root Change Headup Bloody Cape 7 Words The band were really on form. Chino was sounding better than ever and had the crowd at his mercy throughout. The best moment had to be before they played ATF when he turned to Abe and did his own Justin Timberlake "You know, I've dreamt about this since I was a little boy. Never knew it would be this way.....drums" then the opening kicked in and he jumped into the area in front of the crowd (taking out a paramedic in the process) and sang the rest of the song amongst the fans. He also customarily called two fans up onto the stage to do the backing vocal of "walk into this world with your head up high" midway through headup. The set seemed really short - 11 songs left us all begging for more. Oh well, nevermind, I'm going to see the kick it live tonight at Brixton which promises to be even better. Well done boys. zclfw03@ucl.ac.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------ A Late Saturday afternoon and the sun is beating down on Donnington Race track and Fans are waiting to See the Deftones , it is their 1st U.K appearance since the release of their fourth album the self titled "Deftones", so many are waiting to see New songs performed. The band come on to Stage , Vibrant and bouncy , they open with Feiteciera Blowing the Crowd away , this song is not what any one in the audience thought Deftones would open with. Chino bounces around the stage like someone half his age from the excitement and energy potrayed you wouldnt think that he is 30. 3rd song in and they play a song that everyone one will know " My own Summer (shove it)" Moreno spent the majority of the song in the Sea of People that is Download Festival. Many kid's attempting to Crowd surf over to him just to even get a touch of their hero. But the Crowd interaction did not end their ,During headup Moreno invited 2 members of the audience up on stage to sing the song with him. As Anticipated Deftones played some new songs ,Minerva saw Moreno play a guitar as well as singing. The Deftones finished the show probably using up all of the bands energy singing the violent and energetic " Seven Words" Deftones did a great show , and in my opinion was the high light of the 1st Day of Download Festival 2003 ollie@bigmonsterhitslittletokyo.com ------------------------------------------------------------ deftones were really the only reason me and my friend went to download on 31st may, but amen, marilyn manson and iron maiden were playing aswell, so it was a kinda cool line-up aswell. a lot of the bands who played were rubbish, especially inme, who are supporting deftones in manchester on june 4th which sucks cos they sounded really like incubus. but like i said i only went for deftones, so while ministry were playing i went into the crowd and got as close as i could, which wasnt very close but when ministry finished everyone seemed to leave which was good cos it meant i could get to the front but strange cos i didnt know why they would want to be leaving! there was some technical delay so they came on late and they didnt have a backdrop and i dont know if that was on purpose or because it hadnt worked. everyone in the crowd started chanting chinos name and they slowly came onto the stage one at a time and then chino came running on and stood at the front surveying the audience who had gone off their heads by this point. they opened with feiticeira and played (in not the order), my own summer, hexagram, be quiet and drive, root, change, head up, minerva, bloody cape, around the fur, and they finished with 7words. there may have been another one but i dont think there was. chino stopped early on in change and asked everyone if we wanted him to carry on and the crowd shouted at him for stopping so he started again. also he shouted "good morning beautiful" but got no reaction, apart from the odd few which i think must have pissed him off a bit! i dont know if hes done it at every gig but i saw him on the bigdayout video and before around the fur he goes on about how hes been dreaming of this forever and then cues abe by saying "drums" which is a cool intro. there was a path down the middle of the pit to the sounddesk and he came down to this during around the fur and was standing on the rail screaming in peoples faces and his shirt was all stretched and he was joking about it after. during headup he got a guy up onstage but two guys climbed up so they both did it and were good at it and chi gave them a beer after. it was really weird though because hardly anyone seemed to be singing along cos most of the crowd was there for iron maiden, so there were only a few of us singing our hearts out. but i think chino summed it up before they finished by saying something like "for those of you who are fans of deftones, lets show those who arent fans, what they are missing" and they went into seven words, slightly faster than normal. but what he said was so true, because those who dont listen to deftones, really dont know what theyre missing! chinochaos@hotmail.com ---------------------------------------------------------------- i went to download festival just to see deftones. deftones will be playing in holland at the pinkpop festival here but they only sell 3 day tickets and i only just wanted to see deftones! i know someone who could arrange presspasses for donwload so i decided to fly to the uk. also the bands playing there are mostly heavy bands, so the choice was easily made. saturday may 31st, 5.00 pm, i was hoping to catch some of the deftonesguys in the pressarea before the show cuz i saw a lot of other bands hanging out there like, taproot, spineshank, chimaira, murderdolls, amen, nofx, soil, a, one minute silence, disturbed, mudvayne and stone sour. unfortunatly, the guys must have stayed at the backstage area cuz i did not see any of them. anyways, i made my way towards the main stage just before they had to go on. the stage was huge so i was pretty far away. way different from when i first saw them in 1997 in a small club without barriers. the band entered the stage all together really 'easy'. they started out with 'feiticeira' followed by 'my own summer' and 'be quiet and drive'. they vibe was a lot different from the previous shows i've seen. i've seen deftones 10 times now and this one i wanna call relaxed... the band have grown musically and got a bit older, maybe that's why the first shows i saw were way more intense. for some reason i think this more relaxing way of performing was something good cuz the show was amazing. the band played 'hexagram' followed by a short interlude by chino singing some lines from rapper 50 cent's hitsong 'in the club'. chino strapped on his guitar to started out with the intro of 'minerva'. this song sounded amazing live. after this chino was making this little joke with saying the line from justin timberlakes song 'like i love you' in a childish sounding voice: 'i used to dream about this when i was a little boy, i never thought it would end up this way......drums' and abe kicked in with around the fur. followed by root after which chino picked up the guitar again to start out with 'change' which he stopped after a bit. the gave his guiter back to one of the crew members saying something like: i don't wanna do this, i wanna play iron maiden! chi started playing a maiden bassline and abe was trying to play a maiden song too after which they all laughed and chino finally started to play the full version of 'change'. the song actually started with just the sounds frank makes during the intro followed somewhat later by chino's guitar intro. between some songs chino also joked about chi; 'the only thing chi likes is porn and booze' he said. also chi said it was great to be back at donington and to play with iron maiden again after 15 years (????) next up was headup and during the break two fans were asked to come onstage to sing backups during the end of the song. they did a good job. annoying factor for me during the show were the many times the crowd was chanting: 'chino, chino, chino'... GUYS! it's the whole band that is great so: 'deftones, deftones' deftones!!!' headup was followed by bloody cape and the set was closed with 7 words introduced by chino with this line: 'for those of you who are deftonesfans, show those who aren't fans, what they are missing'. a great show, a little on the short side but that's just becuz it's a festival. SET: Feiteceira My Own Summer (Shove It) Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away) Hexagram --- 50 Cent's in the Club excerpt by Chino Minerva --- Justin Timberlake excerpt by Chino Around The Fur Root Change (In The House Of Flies) cut --- failed Iron Maiden jam Change (In The House Of Flies) full Headup Bloody Cape 7 Words after that i went to the pressarea again hoping to find one of the guys. luckily enough, stef was just passing by to the backstage area and i asked him to sign my drawing and cd sleeve. he was very nice and not stoned (as usually is hahaha). he even took the time to talk to me for a while and i took a picture with him. somewhat later my friend lucy who had an all access pass asked me if i wanted to borrow it for a while to see if i could find deftones backstage to which i replied very happily: yes please!!! i went to the backstage area where i saw the band sitting outside by their dressing room. i went up to chi to let him sign my drawing on which he replied: 'you're a badass artist man'! chino and frank, just done eating diner were sitting somewhat closer to the dressing room and i asked them to sign my stuff too. chino was very nice and remembered some art i did in the past (actually a logo i gave him in 1998, so that was very cool he remembered that shit!). i wanted to take some pics with them and stef offered me to take em after which i took one with him again witout a fence between us. stef was amazingly cool i talked to him for like 30 minutes about all kinds of stuff: the difference between america and europe, living in america, food, cars and digital camera's. he said i should move to la cuz there's where i could be rich! hahah it was so cool, he seriously made me change my mind about moving to the states! he showed me his super cool camera and we started to take pics to test options on the camera which was fun. in the meantime chino, frank and chi all left, probably to go see iron maiden. while i was sitting next to stef marily manson and his girlfriend dita von teese passed by all dressed up, holding a glass of champagne and they waved to stef. haha pretty funny to see. mike of taproot had joined us too and we had a little chat. i hadn't seen abe yet but he just arrived there too. he was talking to casey chaos of amen. in 2001 i promised him to send him a shirt for his son with the dutchdeftones.com 'pokemon' logo but after he was finisihed talking i asked him if he still lived there. he said he already moved and gave me a new address and said he had a second little boy who is just 2 months old. he was so supernice and smiling all the time. i like that dude a lot! i promised him to send 2 shirts. he liked my drawing a lot and i took a pic with him too. steve kidd, deftones tourmanager was preparing everyone cuz the band was about to leave. i decided to go also. i missed iron maiden which is okay cuz i met deftones! anyway i'm gonna see iron maiden in holland soon! unfortunatly my dutchdeftones.com buddy thijz couldn't come to this show and next time i hope we will go see them both!! sly sly@slyartwork.com www.dutchdeftones.com
