Deftones @ "Fillmore Auditorium"
Denver, CO - U.S.A.

After seeing the Deftones nearly 20 times over the past 8 years, I still find that I get
extremely excited before each show. Last night was the same. I got to the venue about 3
hours before the first band was to go on. As I was sitting there talking to some friends,
I overheard a venue attendant say that she "heard" of the Deftones, but never "heard" their
music. At that moment, I remembered exactly why I love them.they've had a monumental
impact on the music scene over the past 10 years, and despite selling millions of albums,
the "mainstream" still do not know who they are.
The scheduled first band, Thursday, was not there to open up. Some guys next to me said
they were a really good band live. I was disappointed, to say the least. Thrice went on
and played a good set (about an hour long). They had a lot of energy, some catchy riffs,
and nasty effects. My only complaint was that all of their stuff sounded like one song.
I've heard other people say that about the Deftones, so I guess it is how you look at things.
When Thrice was finished, the crowd started to get rowdy for the Deftones. The place was
packed and people were antsy. The Tones opened up with Minerva, and despite the fact that
is my least favorite song on the new album, it was phenomenal. The crowd sang the entire
song in perfect harmony with Chino. The band then went on to play the first song of each
of their albums. The energy was amazing. When the white lights flickered on and off, all
you could see was the masses singing along with their hands in the air. Chino did his
classic "stand up and brace against the crowd" during many of the early songs. He did a
lot of crouching at the front of the stage during slower songs and fiddled with his effects
unit to create a lot of delay sounds with his voice. It was great.
As far as the rest of the band---Abe added in a lot of extra "off-beat" tom hits and crazy
double-bass combinations, Chi's voice was downright medieval, Frank mixed some insane
samples (much different than other live performances and on the albums), and Steph's guitar
effects were some of the best I've heard from him.
My favorite parts of the concert were:
1. Chino fell down flat on his back during one of the first few songs. He continued
to lie there for a few minutes like he was dead. I haven't seen this since he did it at a
show back in 1996.
2. When songs like "7 Words", "Mascara", and "Around the Fur" were played, the people
in the "specialty" pit knew none of the lyrics. Over half of them just stood there, not
knowing what to do.
3. They ended their set with Damone and Nosebleed. It was the first time I had ever
seen Damone live. Nosebleed was probably the best I've seen them play it. I was going crazy.
Here is the setlist. It is pretty shady because I'm going by memory. I don't think I left
any songs out.
Minerva - moody blue lights and girls screaming.
Hexagram - Chino was braced up against the crowd.
Shove It - the whole crowd was bouncing up and down.
Bored - I think lyrics from "Lucky You" were in this song.
Feiticera - the crowd was bouncing again.
Mascara - only the second time I've ever seen this. Beautiful.
Around the Fur - Chino was doing his classic "huffing" at the beginning.
Digital Bath - Frank had some weird mixes during this some. Very surreal.
Be Quiet and Drive - it started out with a riff I've never heard before. I was fooled.
Needles and Pins - one of my favorites. Heavy and muddy.
Deathblow
Bloody Cape - this was 50x better than their performance on Carson Daly.
7 Words - no breakdown with "Say it Ain't So". Thank God.
Pink Maggit - I think this is the song Chino screwed with the vocal effects.
Change (In the House of Flies) - crowd was singing again.
Damone - what a great surprise. The crowd had no idea what was going on.
Nosebleed - hell yeah!
All in all, they played almost 2 hours. I rate it an 8.5 out of 10 (the last show at the
Fillmore, Chino crowd surfed to the back of the venue and ordered a Cranberry and Vodka on
top of the balcony-that is a 10 to me. Plus, some guy grabbed Chino's shoe off him and I
snagged it from him at the last minute). My only criticism was that Steph had his guitars
too loud during the last part of the show. He drowned out Abe, Chino, and Chi. However, it
could have been that my hearing was completely screwed at that point. You better see the next
show that is coming up!

the show was FUCKING AMAZING. ten times better than the red rocks show. thrice is fucking gay.
every song sounds fucking identical. my friends and i made the trip from Boulder in the snow
and arrived as thrice started. we smoked some ciggies while they played and then sqeezed our
way to front and center. as the lights dimmed, the crowd went fucking nuts and the chants of
"deftones" could be heard from the back of the fillmore to the front. as chino and the boys
took the stage, they played the intro and then broke into minerva. the crowed swayed with the
song and it was simply unbelievable. then came hexagram... wow!!! chino came down off the stage
and posted himself on the banister. i can honestly say his wails and screams were the best i've
ever heard... all the boys were on tonight. the rest of the setlist i will not post because
i'm sure someone else will. a message to salt lake city and boise: you are in for the best
live show you will ever experience. be prepared to rock your fucking hearts out.
ps. fuck you faggots who enjoy moshing and crowd surfing during digital bath!! just fucking
leave after thrice is done... bitches!!!

I can't say that I have been to many shows. About 5 to be exact, but this
was by far the best one. I saw the Deftones at Summer Sanatarium and I kinda
thought of that as a warm up for this concert. Thursday were not there
tonight...but lucky for us Thrice was! Aww who am I kiddin', Thrice
sucked..but it got the crowd all ready for a kick ass pit when the Deftones
took the stage. The crowd went nuts when the lights dimmed and Abe walked to
his set..then the rest of the band followed...they started with the super
cool intro to Minerva then got the pit goin with Hexagram right after. The
set list was pretty normal..they played a few songs that I wasnt expecting.
The biggest suprise was Pink Maggit which went into Change. They played The
Chauffeur, Needles and Pins, then they mixed Lucky You into Bored (I think
it was Bored anyway). People who write these reviews weren't joking when
they said that 7 Words was fuckin intense. Im trying to remember what they
finished with, I think it was Nosebleed but Im not completely sure. Bloody
Cape is the best fuckin song ever. Chino's screams were perfect, especially
on Hexagram...if not better then ive ever heard them. Stef's Guitar was also
perfect...I dont think there was one thing wrong with this show...except for
that idiot in the mosh pit picking on kids. I wanted to get a group together
and jump his ass! Overall it was a memorable experience..i'll never forget
it.

This is so jumbled because I'm still shocked I saw the Deftones and needless to say I was
really stoned at the time of the concert. Something that wasn't mentioned was that Chino
recited the "ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT" part from the Outkast song "Hey Ya!" and he also started
singing the chorus to "Like Glue" by Sean Paul right after. Thursday wasn't there because they
were performing at the Big Day Out festival in Australia. Thrice was okay, their set sounded
like an hour long song and their fans didn't know how to use etiquette in the mosh pit, the
problem was that no one really knew where the pit was and where it ended. Too many drunk people
wanted to mosh that night. A big highlight of the show for me was "Deathblow," Chino's voice
sounded phenomenal. He wasn't too drunk to sing. I tore it up in the pit during "Nosebleed,"
that's one of my all time favorite songs, and to hear it live was awesome. I can't stress how
good Chino's voice sounded. Steph was of course smoking a blunt in between every song he only
added to the amount of second hand smoke, Abe looked like some sort of model with the fan blowing
his hair, Frank's beats were sweet and he varied them, and I'm sad to say I wasn't really able
to see Chi at times, but his bass sounded great. They played "The Chauffer" which was really
unexpected by me. I was glad to hear "Damone," not many people caught on to it though.
It seemed like there were more fans of their new songs and their main singles, than fans of their
old stuff. "7 Words" was awesome, Chino paused before saying "Squeal Like A Pig" and I could
tell then who knew the Deftones good, because we all screamed "SQUEAL LIKE A PIG." The pit
was intense during "7 Words" and "Hexagram." The only problem with the pit was that a few people
were targeting certain people, like me, especially since I'm a girl. Now that's just messed up.
I agree with Alex, when he said that Chino's screams were GREAT during "Bloody Cape." The Last
Call performance was crap compared to this one. I really liked the lights that happened during
"Deathblow," they were like looking into a kaleidoscope filled with glitter. During "Pins and
Needles" Steph brought out his five string bass and played... it made the song sound more loud
and more intense. It was a great experience, and the best show I have ever seen.

All that I have to say is that the show was amazing!!! People kept telling me that the Summer
Sanitarium show in Denver that I missed was not good and that they suck live now. Bullshit!!
This show proved that Deftones are still on top of their game!
p.s. I'm not sure why Deftones fans would not recognize their songs when they hear them but my
fellow reviews are wrong on their setlists. "Damone" was NOT played at this show it was "Can't
Even Breathe" c'mon guys!

I just read all the reviews form denver and I laughed my ass off. It wasn't damone
you stupid stoners, it was can't even breath off the escape form la soundtrack. they
didn't play
chauffer. there must have been a bit too much weed floating around. Anyone who wasn't
blown away by the pink maggit/change can suck my dog's red rocket. Aside from Hexagram it
was a hightloight of the show. the lighting was really sweet with the red lights and the
backdrop. the band were just dark silhouettes against the red background. the fillmore was an
awsome place. Mascara was a nice surprise as well, Chino used his voice box for some sweet
effects which really added to the song. It was funny to see all the big douche bags stand
around and not know what the song was. On all the songs Chino's vioce was on, his screams
were balls to the wall and on point. Especially on Drive. I was hoping for them to play Boy's
Republic and the Chauffer, but no dice. I will make a point of saying there were too many
macho douche bags out there starting unneccesary pits during slow songs. Just fucking watch
the concert you mother fucking cock suckers! People who just come to a deftones concert to
go to the pit and get high should just stay home and jerk off. Fucking assholes.
