HEXAGRAM
I think that "Hexagram" is Chino talking on the world today, how there's so much violence going in the world today. I think that it's pretty damn blatant actually, in the second verse where he sings "I think it's sweet of you and know your parents are proud", he's talking about people that are willing to go and fight for their belief's, causes, or country..."But I would expect it from anyone to protect life's indigenous sound"...he's saying that he expects anybody to fight for their own reasons - or helping those in need, its hard to explain especially when you're dealing with a delicate subject matter like this. "WORSHIP PLAY PLAY" - you could link this as an Islamic extremist attitude in this day and age, however, nearly all wars are started because of ideologies from one culture that are not agreed upon by another culture, in other words I think he's mocking those that choose to "Worship" their ideal, and then stamp on it and run around with guns. "How the streets they swell" - all the recent "Anti-Iraq" invasion, their the animals making they're way through the crowds or vice versa the "Pro-War" people making their way through the crowds, however you want to look at it...and here comes the best part, "God I trust everyone quicker with one great smile"...he's now caught up, he doesn't know who to believe or side with - The Pro-Iraq invasion people (whatever you wanna call them) or the Anti-Iraq invasion people, the last paragraph is I think him just saying how war is somewhat glamorized on the TV with patriotic themes floating around on so forth, he still remains proud of his country...heh well at least that's the impression I'm getting, I really like this song because it's got so much depth and relevance to what's happening now in the world. By the way, my view comes from my own experiences - I used to be Pro-Iraq, but they didn't find any weapons but Bush keeps on saying that they did...that and have you noticed how the US army seems to keep on fucking shooting anything that moves? Now I'm somewhere in between on the subject matter. Anyway thanks for your time.

Hexagram is a song that makes a political statement against fundamentalist Muslim." death is standard breach for a complex prize" means death is what you have to do to live in heaven with virgins are your helm. " i think its sweet of you and your parents are proud" address sarcastically the reality that families are paid for sons who martyr themselves to kill those against what they believe." how the streets they swell" is how everybody runs for safety after a bombing. "as the animals make there ways through the crowds" is the bomber himself making his way through a crowd to find his destination." if you keep listening you can hear for miles" literally if you are near a car bomb you can hear it. "god i trust everyone with every faint smile" tell how chino will take any sort of human love and take it for as much as he can in this crazy world." the crowd goes wild" is a twist to what you would think instead of a positive crowd going wild its a croed of terror running for there lives" the cameras make you seasick" reports are running from the scene to save them selves." God it's so sweet of you and I know you're proud And the car bomb hits quick click, faint smile! its the same sound" is a message to these terrorist that you may be proud but you do nothing special every car bomb has the same sound. sorry so long but this is a complex song.

First of all, never take any of the Deftones' stuff as literal all of the time. A lot of it is just emotional, and I think this album is the best yet by them because of this fact. Music is art, and no one's meanings are wrong because everyone gets what they want out of a work of art. My interpretation of "Hexagram" (which is one of my top three favorite on the album) is that the song is all about fame. "Death is the standard breach for a complex prize" - Fame can drive people to the edge (i.e. Kurt Cobain). "And the car bomb hits quick click....faint smile" - describes the flash of a camera and the falsity of all the publicity associated with publicity. "Worship..play...worship, play" - the two sides of fame; the fans worship them and those who "play" (meaning literally play as in musicians, or those who party like rock stars). If anything, Chino uses a lot of imagery in his songs, even the ones that are blatantly about sex. Look at them as you would with poetry, or any piece of art for that matter.

Hexagram is to me, life in general and how he (chino) wishes things were much simpler. Paint the streets in white refers to keep everthing plain and simple, rather than complexing shit up and discriminating. Death is standard breach for complex prize, means that you'll understand the true meaning of life, when it's already too late. Everyone has dreams and goals that they're proud of or. That's where (I think it's sweet of you and your parents are proud).Back in the old days (years back) people would think of themselves, however now people actually try and make an effort to protect life.(but i would expect it from anyone now to protect life's indigenous sound.. Worship, play, play - refers to religion that everyone has, each different from one another exactly like a game, but based on one concept that he will take us to paradise (winning). How the streets the swell means, our lands begin to populate and evolve. As we continue to grow, we force things out, i.e. animals (while the animals make their way through the crowds). It goes on everywhere, and it's always going on -(if you keep listening you can hear for miles). And the crowd goes wild means people react to this in diffrent ways either by trying to stop or turning a blind eye to it, which let's in ensue. And the camera makes you seasick, talks about how people are sometimes insecure about themselves, and hate how they look(ed), when something reminds them of the past. We often to bury our past. it's sound of a hexagram is plainly saying its life...it's the sound of life

NEEDLES & PINS
i think 'needles and pins' is conveying the same kind of message as 'my own summer'. "you're a star, you blaze...", "hey you, big star"...it kind of shows that chino's showing sarcasm that whoever he is referring to is just so great. also, chino comes off kind of cocky in this song, "if you want this, then come on" and "who wants to fuck with us now?" pins are also smaller than needles, and chino's needles, so he's referring to himself as bigger than the subject...someone famous he's probably annoyed with. *fred durst*...
- BY Cory Smith
This song to me is about someone admiring anybody that does something extraordinary, wether it be an ex girlfriend performing dance moves or a good friend's band perform. The popularity on these people may have risen so much that they begin to forget to give thanks to people who have supported them from the start. So everytime the admirer comes in contact with this person its always a lame conversation that 99% of the time ends up in argument or a push and shove match. Think about the lyrics and you'll understand. Ex "you're pins, i'm needles"
- BY RopesHangAwake@aol.com
I think this song is about the small barrier that deftones and its fans have and also I think its like a song to all its fans saying thank you. The song starts of with “How neat. I’m impressed how did you get to be so blessed?” and I think this is chino looking at the band from the fans point of view because growing up his probably looked up to bands the way his fans are doing now so its more like him saying “I understand”. Then the next line is “you’re a star. You blaze… out like a sharp machine…” its referring to the type of music the deftones do which is sharp and hard but he also says “like a whale’s moans” which I think is a beautiful sound and it like just sounds so powerful a bit like chinos voice. “well I am here if that’s what you want” his telling the crowed that he is “here” so no more waiting. “here we are… you’re pins – I’m needles – lets play” pins and needles is that numb feeling you get when you sleep on your arm and you get that feeling, well I think in that part of the song chino is trying to say that you don’t just get “pins” or you don’t just get “needles” but you need both of them to get pins and needles so his referring to the crowd as being pins and the band as being needles, so in a way his thanking the crowd because without the fans there wouldn’t be the band. And the rest of the song is just about how you need the fans and need to recognise that with out them a band is nothing and the end where he says “put a cross between me and you… who wants to fuck with us now” is a way of him saying now we’ve gotten this far so who the fuck wants to fuck with us (the band and fans) now?
- BY blahutoo@hotmail.com
I think this song's about like a perfect relationship. "You're a star, you blaze out like a sharp machine, like a whales moan", he's saying that the girl's beautiful on so many levels, not only externally but internally. "i'm here if that's what you want", here he's offering himself to her. Then in the chorus he's telling her that they belong together, "here we are, i'm pins, you're needles, let's play". Then he goes on to say that their relationship should be formed without outside pressure, it's a decision that has to be made by them and them alone, "tune out, everyone in the crowd". And he wants her to love him for who he is, "come fall in love with the sound".
- BY coebe@whiteshillsc.qld.edu.au
I believe this song is simply about tying the knot. It just explains how amazing this girl is. But these few lines make it clear. "Tune out everyone in the crowd"- When you get married, you forget everything else. "Make a pact to eachother, when no one's around."- This could mean a proposal. "Put the cross between me and you."- If you're Christian, getting married is like putting the cross between the two people forever. "Who wants to fuck with us now?"- This person is your life partner, and you feel like you'll be together forever, so it's kind of like saying 'it's us agaisnt the world'.
- BY Omar
to me the meaning of needles and pins is about chinos relation to us, the fans. "how neat i´m impressed how did you come to be so blessed?" describes how he is impressed over how big the deftones have become. "tune out everyone in the crowd, cause now its just me and you" now its only the deftones and us fans that matter. "who wants to fuck with us now?" no one! deftones are back and better than ever! "come fall in love with the sound" we already have. "here we are, you want this? then come on" hell yeah!
- BY danne_d87@hotmail.com
As a Deftones fan I made a research about the meaning of this song. So, as you certainly know (as it was reported in this site) this song had 2 working titles: "White Women" and "Aria", so I searched for a white women named Aria, and what did i find? a princess! Her full name is Aria Giovanni (if you ask I can send a photo). So, I think that this song is something like the part2 of White Pony's "Feiticeira", but this time it's not just the name that is inspired in a beautiful women, but also the full lyric.

MINERVA
In minerva I believe chino is singing about music, In general..and its effect on him...and us. "i get all numb", is the way he describes the feeling, and "were the same numb" is saying were all connected by the music and in the ways it makes us feel...That were not different when it comes to music ,because we all can feel the same way ,no matter who or where we are. " When she sings"," When you sing", I believe is just another way chino is saying it doesn't matter who you are but we can all create something so beautiful that "it brings our knees to the Earth". "God bless you all for the song you saved us" , is a thank you to everyone. Were all in eternal gratitude for the gift that is music. "it could bring back peace to the Earth " is describing the power music has. Which im sure is obvious to all of you..so is the line " For the hearts you break"... I think Minerva is an anthem for all music. One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
- BY Alex
For me, this song is an open love letter from chino to his wife and kid. the fact that he finds himself in a position of such happiness with a close family makes him "get all numb", and he's so amazed by what he's achieved that when he sees his son it "brings my knees to the earth". this song feels like it was written while chino was watching someone sleep. when he says "god bless you all for the song you saved us", it's almost like he's thanking his family for making him grow up and save him from going off and doing stupid shit. and obviously he doesn't like to hear his family moan because it breaks his heart, but at the same time he's glad that they're even around to make him sad, he wouldn't have it any other way. btw, for what it's worth minerva was the roman goddess of wisdom, i don't think that has anything to do with my interpretation of the song but it's nice to know.
- BY Ben
Personally, the song sounds to me like it's about america. minerva is the roman goddess of medicine and war; two elements that seem to be passions of our country. and we're all numb, with tv, with medications, with the war that's going on.. little phases us anymore, the violent video games, kids shooting each other, serial killers. this song is wonderful, and it sounds like america, on an overdose, taking the world down with her. "when she sings, it's over" and then "god bless you all, for the song you saved us" sounds like a prayer, for the end of our tyranny.
- BY Echo
In minerva i think that chino is reaching out to his fans and thanking them for all the concerts theyve been to and all the cds they have bought. Deftones shout out to their best fans. "i get all numb" may refer to the feeling he gets when he is in the studio or on stage but dont forget that fans are a big impact on any bands career. So that feeling may also be for what the deftones feels like when a fan runs up to them crying saying they love them. also this song may be a way of saying that music is a great weapon to keep peace. so deftones keep doin what ur doin and rock on!!!
- BY rey_e73@hotmail.com
Minerva is about war and the terror in war. "i get all numb when she (war) screams that its over....... and it brings my knees to the earth" this is a undescribalble feeling that when it hits you makes you weak such a joy that the war is over he has no choice but to fall to his knees in joy."You're the same...numb When you sing it's over Such a strange numb It could bring back peace to the earth" shows that this feeling of joy and love when a war is finally over the feeling both soldiers encouner will make them both better men and could make them peaceful. "so god bless you all for the songs you saved us all" this is to thank all soldiers for fighting and helpin protect our freedoms and the freedoms of the world. although this war is terrible chino feelis it is necassary to enjoy life.
- BY Mike Bangel
To me the song conveys about thinking of a loved one(s) while away at war. He get's so overcome with good/happy thoughts that his body goes numb all over -(I get all numb when she sings it's over). He's thankful for everyones prayers that helped him live and prosper through the hell he's endured (And god bless you all for the song you saved us). The numb feeling he get's is so significant that he thinks it could quite possibly restore order and peace to the world- (Such a strange numb it could bring back peace to the world). However when he speaks of (for the hearts you break everytime you moan) - he refers to the war, the lives it claims and takes everytime the war moans(-a serious battle-). All in all he wants to thank everyone wether they've departed from the earth or still roam it (And god bless you all on earth).
- BY Ivan 4 Nina
The song meaning is almost obvious, it's about Chino's wife and son, when he says "I GET ALL NUMB" is 'cause he's happy , but he doesn't know why he wants to cry I guess. He's grateful because of his son that's why he sings "AND IT BRINGS MY KNEES TO THE EARTH". "FOR THE SONG YOU SAVE US" This I'm not sure but I guess that he didn't effort making this song, it came from the heart. "FOR THE HEART YOU BREAK, EVERY TIME YOU MOAN" this is clear as water, when a baby is born there's a popular statement"It breaks my heart", and every time u moan are the childbirth pains.

GOOD MORNING BEAUTIFUL
I think Good Morning Beautiful is about a girl in a coma. Chino could be writing about a loved one or a friend. You're crazy to think i would leave you this way, he's saying he'll never leave her side. You should wake up, before the wrath comes, he wants her to wake up before she dies. You're too tired, you choose heaven over the earth and me, but come on please, he's pleading with her not to give in to death.
- BY coebe@whiteshillsc.qld.edu.au
i think GMB is about being unfaithul. about someone whos dating a girl that already has a boyfriend "you should wake up before the wrath come, me and you should take off before the wrath comes" he thinks the two lovers should run away together from the girls boyfriend and all the anger against the two. "and one of these days I pray it will be sometimes soon but you´re crazy if you think i would leave you this way" he hopes that it will be over between his girl and her boyfriend but he would´nt leave her in trouble no matter what.
- BY danne_d87@hotmail.com
I think this song is about how Chino or whoever Chino is talking about in this song will soon face a harsh end to a relationship with a loved one. He knows how important he is to their relationship and how important the other person is in the relationship to him, for he says 'one of these days you'll break me of many things", meaning that he can see himself and this person's relationship meeting its fate someday. As listeners, we cannot assume that he is talking about a female automatically, nor can we take into account the title. And that day when their relationship comes to an end, it will be a 'cold white day' which leads me to believe that Chino finds comfort and solace in a cold, non-eventful type day: it would also represent purity and innocence in many cultures, the color white, so perhaps the 'cold white day' is a symbol of how it will mark the end of a new beginning, how that Chino knows he can continue from that relationship from that point on: He just needs a whole cold white day to recuperate and start over again. Furthermore, he gives in to the notion that he is deeply concerned for this person or thing (why do we always assume that all songs are about people, he could be talking about a flower, you know, Chino trying to teach the flower how to grow during the drought season in Sacramento,,,makes total sense, Chino trying to water a plant, nurturing nature, not too far-fetched I don't think) when he says 'you're crazy if you think that i would leave you this way' that although this person or thing does not want to continue given the circumstances, Chino says 'hey, it's okay, i'm here for you, and i refuse that you don't reach your full potential, i'm right here if you need me'. Talking about waking up before the wrath comes, he could be referring to how this friend of his should stop doing drugs, having unprotected sex, cheating, stealing, whatever, or how the flower should force itself to grow. Wow, this song has a lot of interpretation here, I am going to stop here. He could be talking about his kids and about how he refuses to leave their sides, for he has a lot to teach them, and the wrath represents lost innocence in the teenage years. That's all for now, hasta luego fans de los deftones

This song is about, i believe, chino and this christian girl he wants to be with. you see i was raised in church, and i knew a million guys that wanted to get with all my friends in church, but if the guy wasnt the "perfect christian" then the guy had no chance. chino sees this girl that is wasting her life away in church devoting herself to someone elses ideas of life; "you should wake up before the wrath comes" is referring to the end of the world spoken of in the bible; the end of the world is exactly what the church has been wating upon for centuries. they wait for just "one of these days". but he wants her to see that there is so much more to the world outside the doors of church, and he would be "crazy to leave her this way", Well I know what you're like I've read it on the walls You're too tired, you choose heaven over the earth and me but come on please... chino has been through all the church stuff too; he knows that the church wants you to forget about life here on earth and concentrate completely on God; its a path that i would say is the "easy way out". chino is simply begging her to make some sense of what hes trying to show her.
- BY Zac
This song may be about chino and his wife.I don't know if chino is Christian or not but i believe this song is about him being a Christian and his wife a unbeliever and hes trying to help her to believe or teach her about God or salvation "you'd be crazy not to want me to teach you the way"i believe hes telling her to "wake up" and start believing"before the wrath comes" The wrath of god or the "rapture" when God comes back for his people and takes them to heaven and leave the unbelievers for his wrath"you should wake up before the wrath comes(me and you)" he wants her to go with him. but he know how shes like"i know what your like"he know she doesn't want to believe or doesn't want to go to church with him she makes up excuses she sais shes too tired"your too tired" but he tells her"but com on please" well thats what i think it means dumb huh...
- BY one_god_apostolic1@yahoo.com
I think it's about suicide. This boy is so sure that suicide is the best choice and he wants to convince his girlfriend to join him you'd be crazy not to want me to teach you the way, but she doesn't agree. But he promise her he won't leave her here you're crazy if you think I would leave you this way. He thinks that it would be so much better if they were dead and he doesn't want to be on Earth when the end comes (me and you) could take off before the wrath comes. In his opinion life on Earth is so hard and it makes people so tired to see the truth, the best way You're too tired, you choose heaven over the earth, but she still doesn't want to kill herself and he is still begging her but come on please... Well, that's it! And for the record I don't want to kill myself.

WHEN GIRLS TELEPHONE BOYS
This song to me is a fine example of what happens when you want to be in love with the wrong person. After too many failures of trying to make it work, you want the person to just go away. Life teaches a proud few of us that the best way to find out what love really is, is by making you go through a bunch of bullshit with the wrong person. Finally, you just want them to get out of your life. The kicker is when you actually do get back to being yourself without this person, you don't care about them anymore. But in typical female fashion (or male) they want to come back into your life. But now you just say FUCK NO, because your so much better than they are. You get the chance to say SOMETHING'S WRONG WITH YOU...AND I HOPE WE NEVER DO MEET AGAIN. Thank You Camillo Moreno.
- BY azazsaz@bellsouth.net
i think the lyrics refer to when the girl or the guy is on the phone to their partner and they end up arguing over the phone over pathetic things and the arguments just come and go on a daily basis and it comes to a point where one of them cant be assed with dealing with it anymore, they come to a stage where they love this person so much but then end up despising them because they cant take no more of this shit being thrown at them. 'always the same taste just new injury'- i think when he says this he refers to arguing with the person you are with in a relationship very often and the argument you are having is about the same thing it has been for a while, they keep going round in circles only it effects the relationship more. 'well i'll wear the claws if you'd like that'- i'll take the blame if you want me to and be the bad guy 'yeah if you'd like that we can ride on the black horse'- yeah if you want to we can go down that same path again, a bad experiance at that coz he mentiones the colour black usually resorting to morbid thoughts? 'dont speak dont say anything incase we ever meet again'- dont say anything at all dont stir up problems in case we meet again it will change things even more for the worse, dont say anything while on call, say it in person as we already go round in circles so what difference does it make? 'somethings wrong with you, well i hope we never do meet again'- you have changed for the worse and i cant stand to be around you no more, youve cause so much pain and hurt and ruined me that i cant bare to stand the thought of meeting you again 'you always sharpen your teeth cause youre like that, and youre like that everytime you pull heart back'- you always bring up topics to argue from, you like to go on at me about things not worth going on about, it comes naturally to you, its in ur blood to do this. you always go cold hearted on me and turn your back on me, you always change to a cold hearted person. 'and her compacts carving deeper in your lap'- her evil is getting to you now, you cant bare the thought of going thorugh the same thing time after time with her ' i would call but i forget where the phone is at '- an excuse not to call her because he doesnt want things to get from bad to worse
- BY tigger_n_company@hotmail.com
I think this song is about a guy reluctantly going to war. he doesn't support the war, but he has to go for soem reason. his girlfriend however, DOES support the war and he finds that repulsive about her. he tells her that he wear the claws and ride the black horse, basically become evil, if that's what she likes. and he promises to call when he gets back from the war, but he warns her not to say anything, because he is so close to hating her, if she makes one mistake he will leave her and never come back. he feels that this girl is brutal because she supports this war that he hates, and so, he warns her that he might just end things with her for that. i don't know why, but that's the sense i made of it.
- BY feitceira@hotmail.com
My take on this song is that it is about a girl that comes into, or rather, invades a guys life. The guy trys to live his own life and enjoy it to the fullest, but the girl constantly interferes, manipulates, and trys to control the guy by telling him what to do. At first, this guy and that girl were on good terms- friends and all, but after she gets involved with his relationships and drives away every girl he ever cared about, he grows to despise her. "Always the same old taste just new injury" means she always pulls the same old shit to drive different interests away from him, however the "new injury" means he suffers the loss of a new/different girl each time. "Yeah if you'd like that we can ride on a black horse/a great new wave Hesperian death horse" he trys to spend time with this girl as a friend to please her because he wants to be her friend and doesn't want her to get hurt. He tells her "I can call you when I get back" to make sure her feelings aren't hurt, however she takes this as an invitation to think of him as more than a friend. "but don't speak, dont say nothing/in case we ever do meet again" the guy shows negativity once the slow realization seeps in that she doesn't care about him, nor does she care if he's happy with his life the way it is- she will stop at nothing to rape him of everything he ever shared his life with so that she can be with him. "Somethings wrong with you/and I hope we never meet again" She is infatuated with him, but he hates her for what she is doing to him.

I'm an intense fan and think I dialed in on an slightly off-key interpretation of "When Girls Telephone Boys" on their recent album. I see that someone beat me to the punch and nailed this meaning out of the song--but I'd hope that my own thoughts and words on the matter would be beneficial to the site. I'd say mine strives for the complexities of the idea's comprehension, failing to trail off into line to line "teen-angst" tie ins. I hope you see the value in my thoughts... and can help me share them with the deftones-community:)! Thanks for your time guys, and ROCK THE 'TONES! BRM 'When Girls Telephone Boys'--a dial-TONE interpretation 'When Girls Telephone Boys', as I see it, is most invitingly, a bit of phone diaglougue between two lovers. The song's title reveals it foremost--the female role enlivening the initiating verse, ("Always the same taste just new injury...") through "yeah when i get back i will call!". The following four lines are as close to the chorus as exists in the song, through "well i hope we never do meet again". In these four lines, Chino’s vocal mood downshifts into a seemingly different character all together, and a polar negative of the previous verse. This dialogue repeats once, with the female role in the second verse starting; “You always sharpen you’re teeth…”, and then again the male, yet acting as a quasi-chorus, but also a verbal-counter-attack (beautifully written by Chino), ending the twice repeated pattern of tele-quarrel between the lovers. Lovers. Lovers?... 'Lovers': The original name of an album that is now their self-titled release(5.20.03), and the album with "When Girls Telephone Boys" to boast. ;)dig it?

Now, it's pretty hard to actually understand what is being said at the beginning of the song, but once I got it figured out, I think on the whole this is where a great deal of the explanation of the song takes place. I'm not certain of the first few words in the first sentence of the intro, but I believe that I hear the word "cuffs". I've been juggling between that and "cops" (who knows why) for the longest time and when me and a friend took a close listen to it, it definitely sounds like "cuffs". The next is "those things work?" being in a context of saying in question rather than exclamation, in which most people confuse it. Next said is "It's kind of left up to you... it's hella sensitive...". What I got from this and what led me to believe that it was the explanation was mainly just the context of the whole thing. I TRULY BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A SONG ABOUT ONE PERSON'S EXPERIENCE WITH A DOMINATRIX. If you read through what I have quoted from the beginning, it becomes more and more clearly possible. Next, the actual verse and chorus beakdown only re-enforces it. The first verse is from the dominatrix's point of view... "Always the same old taste just new injury" - She has been in her line of work for some time now and has come to realize that it's all the same. Each NEW day is the same for her, but something different for the person the recieving end. "I'll wear the claws if you like that." - If the person recieving wants to do something new and kinky, well what the hell, it's all in a day. "Well if you like it we can ride on a black horse." - Dominatrix = leather = black. "A great new wave, hesperian death horse." - Or even some more fucked up, new things than that. Now, from the person recieving's side, "I can call you when I get back. Yeah, when I get back I will call." - This was a weird experience, I think maybe if I need anything more from you, I'll call you, but dont call me. Now the chorus is pretty eerie if you think about it. "Dont speak, dont say nothing. Incase we ever do meet again." - If you ever see me on the streets, or anywhere, do not say a word about what happened. This is private and I want it to stay this way. "Something's wrong with you. I hope we never do meet again." - Quite simply, he figured out after doing it, that the dominatrix was one twisted bitch, and he never wants to see her again. As the song progresses, the tone get's angrier and more in your face. This is to symbolize that the person he is trying to avoid is not going away, and he cant get away. The dominatrix is simply infatuated with the fact that it was something new and great for her. Thus, she doesnt want to let go the feeling of newness.

DEATHBLOW
At first i could not get into this song at all...i wanted to, but i couldn't find anything redeeming about it. For the first time ever i almost dismissed a Deftones' song, but then... Then, I considered the title, "Deathblow," of the song, and while it played I pictured two men fighting; one guy delivering the final punch in slow motion. The other guy collapsed and died. Then i imagined a disease stricken persons' last fleeting grasp for air as they passed...and suddenly the song clicked. "Soon as you came in/All the beasts went away" means as soon as death entered all the pain and suffering ended. "The ropes hang to keep us all awake" could symbolize the I.V., drugs, and oxygen tubes administered when you're in a hospital, in your death bed. The song most likely is in reference to the passing of one of Chino's relatives ("home with you").
- BY Dirty Frank
I think Deathblow is about a guy and a girl who tend to fight in an abusive relationship and end up in the hospital with I.V.'s and all stuck up to them (The ropes hang to keep us all awake). Yet while in bed the guy sees his lover and puts all the anger and misery away from fighting (As soon as you came in, the agony it went away, I noticed what you wore, to everything we spoke and more...). Then when they finally make up and get home they continue to fight and it ends up repeating itself, where it's an on-again and off-again relationship (It only takes one break of your pose to get off, To save our place...home with you...still the same song....). That is what I think Deathblow means and it of course is most likely wrong, but one of many things that makes Deftones my favorite band is how Chino lets the fans interept the meaning of the songs in their own way and even his band members.

This song seems to have variations of meanings, but two stand out, one being a love story, the other being about how people act in the world, and how much it takes to wake up and see the true meaning of things. "As soon as you came in, all the beast went away." This line could represent the narrarator sees a beautiful woman and is love struck when she does, and all the ignorant other males fade out and he just focuses on her. "They noticed that you're warm wait till you leave then come back for more..." this line means after the woman left all the other normals in the room fade back in with their assholish comments on how good she looks, etc. "The ropes hang to keep us all awake" He's saying that nowadays it takes so much to make people see and hear the truth you basically have to be hung, even to get their attention. "And I should have known" When he realizes the truth, he wonders why he never realized before because it was there the whole time, he was just blinded by the normality in everyone, and how everyone always acts the same all through their lives, with no purpose or goal, just living how the media and the government wants you to live; blind."As soon as you came in, the agony it went away" When meeting this woman she shows him the truth, and his pain on not knowing the truth his whole life made him sick, but now his agony is gone. "I noticed what you wore, to everything we spoke and more..." He pays attention to every detail on her and what she says, as they speak about everything in the world. "It only takes one break of your pose to get off" This line is one of the most metaphorical in the song, when he says it only takes one break of your pose, he realizes that some of things she had been saying recently pointed out that she was being trapped in ordinary life again, and in telling him the things about normal life, she became a liar, faker, and poser to him. "To save our place...home with you...still the same song...." He wishes it was how it was before when everything they had together was special, the things they spoke about life, and how everyone was so normal without knowing the truth, but she changed and she began to lie and turned normal and simple minded again, and when he tried to communicate with her on those same levels again, she thought he was crazy. So he goes back to his ordinary life, everything being the same as it was before he met her, only with him knowing the truth, and her being oblivious to the truth again. "As soon as you came in, is when I believe we both crashed course" He believes that as soon as they met is when fate began to happen, he wanted escape, she knew the truth, he loved her for that, she started to go back into ordinary life again, she lied to him, and now he realizes that as soon as they met is when they started having problems, and confrontations. "It only takes one break of a pose to get off" Now all he needs is women, because he tries to forget her, and with him knowing the truth, there is no point on trying to turn others to the elite that have knowledge of the truth, women have become objects to him. "And to save our place home with you all" In this line, he is speaking to everyone (the ones of not knowing the truth, you, the viewers, everyone.) because even they have become objects, and now all he wants to do is be normal, and be with us all, but he cant, because the truth wont leave. "That's all it takes?" He must have talked to the woman who he had loved, the woman who turned normal, and she tells him secretly that there was no truth, it was all a perception and that he can go back to living his life again, since there is no truth, and there is no being normal. "Well I should have known." He should have known all along that he couldn't have been different from everyone else...(but could he have been...?) "It's still the same song..." He goes back to his normal life in wonder now, instead of knowing the truth, and instead of being "normal". Now he has to find the real truth.

I think "Deathblow" is about two people in a relationship, everything being good at one time, then bad at other times. "Soon as you came in/ all the beast went away" means that as soon as he, or whoever is speaking, meets up with this person, all his anger and hurt that he holds on the inside is terporarily cured because he is with this great person. "The ropes hang to keep us all awake" is supposed to be like a reminder saying things can't always be perfect, conflict will arise. "It only takes one break of a pose to get off " means that it's so easy to mess up and once someone has messed up things are fucked. " As soon as you came in, is when I believe we both crashed course" means the two people in the relationship got into a fight/argument. They were angry and one another.

I think deathblow is about love and suicide. there's this girl he loves so much, she makes everything bad go away. and when she walks in a place, no matter where it is, everyone falls in love with her bcause she's warm, and if she comes back they love her even more. he loves this girl so much, he values every single word she says, every lat detail of the way she looks and more. the ropes that hang to keep us all awake are the nooses where so many men have killed themselves for her, because she's this beautiful goddess. all it takes is one break of your pose to get off, one hint of rejection, and this man, too, will hang himself. they all hope that by dying for her, they save themselves a place home with her, in ehr heart, but they don't. it's still the same song, meaning nothing has changed. everyone loves this girl but no one can have her.

BATTLE-AXE
Ok, i been in this situation before. this song is about 2 people. young lovers, right, and everythings going good for the first few months, until this girls past catches up to them. Then she starts changing, very slow at first, but then after a while she's a whole new person. The other person in the relationship is always telling her that she's changed and its not a good change and such, but she wont hear it. so then the relationship ends and these two people see each other on a daily basis, and the guy does all he can to avoid her at all costs because the wierdness is too much, Ex "i want to sleep if you are awake"
- BY RopesHangAwake@aol.com
So picture this. It's this realy realistic guy and he's in love with his best friend, and yeah she is a girl. The girl is innocently stubborn and is the believer in the relationship. She tends to twist and turn things how she sees it.The guy is trying to convince her that she should wake up,or well he wants to but he's not sure what would make her happy or what would be the best thing to do.So at the moment he stays away from her because he knows he'll try to intervene in her unfathomable dreams. So he says "I want to sleep when you are awake".Which puts a contrast in the song cuz she's the one dreaming not him.He wants her to realise she still sleeping and not seeing what's realy going on thus "Still making believe that you aren't at all crazy".According his intelectual prowes he believes she will be better off if the truth (or whatever she's ignoring, maybe herself")hits her hard and she makes peace with it now rather than living in a dream world and not being true to herself. He know's she's happy at the time and it makes him proud, but he knows she can't keep going on like this. This gives the sense of frustration in the lyrics. He says she faces it only when the pain of illusion hits her ("you only sleep when you lost cause").He will also love to know she will always feel that way, happy but he knows sometime, sooner or later it's going to nail her down. And as his own frustation reaches it climax, he blurts it to her that she is well far away in the skies. Thus securing her happines and ruining the little of what was left of the relationship. Well thats my meaning of it, and the great thing of the Deftones you make your own world which you relate to.
- BY Malice
Battle axe sounds as if he saying. Here's our new album. Buy it. Enjoy it. I'm proud of you. You thought we sold out but here is our old sound. Like it never changed. Like you've always thought it should be this way. It's a simple idea. The reason I believe this works is because a lot of the time (refering to interviews with chino) his lyrics are about being a star and his fans. Sometimes his lyrics don't have that deep meaning we're all looking for.
- BY murray@wetafx.co.nz
This song, to me, describes how you can be with someone, and after a while you involuntarily start to change them for the worse. And that person starts to think that they were always this fucked up. "you like to think that you have always been this way".
- BY michaelquiggle@yahoo.com
The title, battle axe, brings to my mind an axe with two blades. something with two sides. this leads me to believe that this song is about someone with an alter ego, or multiple personality disorder. "I want to sleep when you are awake, well I still believe that you aren't at all crazy"- these lines sound like one side of the personality trying to rationalize the behavior of the "other" person inside. then "you'd love to think you have always been this way" could be again one personality begging the other to realize that something is in fact wrong. "you only sleep when you've lost cause"- when the personality is tired and done with its' work then the other gets to take over. "i'd love to think you will someday feel the same"- one side hoping resolution can be found. the final line is kind of a like a warning from one side, telling the other that someday things will change. The personality that is talking could be considered more the yin to the yang of the dominant personality that is oblivious to the vivisection, the separation.

It's interesting to hear these interpretations. I always thought it was about religion, an anti-religious song. " Still make believe that you aren't all crazy" seems to me to say that the ideas in certain religious doctrines are insane. At the line, " If you don't believe I think you should" the song seems to switch to someone else's point of view; a parents, perhaps. " You'd make me so proud," suggests an attempt to coerce into religion.

LUCKY YOU
The first thing I thought when I heard this song was that it sounded like a perfect soundtrack track for the Crow, my favorite movie. Appropriate that it ended up on another soundtrack. Literally, it sounds like the somber cry of help from a prisoner of war.. ("They'll come soon I keep waiting... and I wait... Won't somebody...save me....").. waiting for the soliders killing and dying for him to arrive.. (You've crossed the walls - Excelled; Further along through their hell; All for my heart, I watch you kill; You always have, you always will). It seems like a bitter reproach on the P.O.W, and war situation in Iraq. The soldier seems to take a side of the protestors all over the world after experiencing it first hand, and has grown excessively bitter from the decayed situation around him. "Spread your wings and sail out to me..." sounds like a call to all those who have died (spread their wings to heaven) in search of possible P.O.W's and in the war overall.
- BY Ross Hudgens
I think this song is about being stalked by a woman at a party. I feel Chino is on some tripped out drug binge and keeps seeing this woman appear. As he sees her appear he tries to follow her but everytime he comes close, she seems to disappear. He feels so lucky that this woman is so intrigued by him. But at the same time he feels trapped as if she won't leave him alone. This woman also keeps appearing in his mind. Like she is almost unforgettable. I think she is searching for someone to love her and be with her. Soon Chino catches up with her and confronts her. All she wants is his affection. But he finally realizes in his mind who this woman is all along....and its his wife Celeste.

Lucky you reminds me al ot of the POW situation in kuwait and iraq. as m ore and more POWs are found in iraqi prison camps (more often dead than alive) we see more and more of how much they suffered over the past twelve years. the narrator of the song is a kuwaiti POW waiting for someone to come and save him. s/he's waiting for osmeone to come save her/him and take him/her home. this involves crossing the walls, going into their hell, and ofcourse, killing, so only attempt a rescue if you feel lucky. the repeated invite to "spread your wings and sail out to me" shows how desperate for rescue s/he is, asking to do whatever it takes to "come and take me home"

like all of the Deftones' songs, they seem to paint a scene out of a made up artsy college film that captivates and changes your point of view. Reminding me of lonliness and suicide, this song may as well talk about watching yourself quietly parishing into a deep unescapable hole. THEY'LL COME SOON, I KEEP WAITING,WON'T SOMEBODY SAVE ME....It has a hint of wanting help from family/friends or their attention at least SO SPREAD YOUR WINGS AND SAIL OUT TO ME thinking that dying (flying away) will take him out of his misary COME AND TAKE ME HOME pleading to God to take him up to where he belongs (heaven) or maybe a saftey zone in his life, something worth while

BLOODY CAPE
The song is written from the perspective of ... Cristofor Columb.Yes, the one who discovered America. In those days it was believed that the earth was flat and that one could, at the end of the ocean, "to fall off of the earth... ".When Columb chose another route to what he thought was going to be India, there were many people who thought they would literally "to fall off of the earth... " .Off coure the first lyrics all point to my conclusion as well :"In waves the ships have all sailed to the sea ".As you may know there were 3 ships that left for America. The song's title referrs to the massacre that followed, when the american-indiens were slaughtered by the europeans. The cape was worn at the time by the "conquistadors".Columb went to America searching for a road to India and trying to satisfy the needs of the europeans :"soon as our needs are fed". It may sound strange, but this is important since it is a milestone in American history. The uncharted route was dangerous , hence the end of the song : "God help!".

I see this song kind of an spontanious escape from something maybe like "be quite and drive" or "passenger" going on a road trip spontaniously, and you get this feeling from it, something extra-ordinary, then it goes all wrong and a cry for help to return things to normal... In waves the ships have all sailed to the sea (neighborhood growing up and everyone moving off, branching off to new places) Well do you wanna wait or leave with me tonight (kind of a spontanious question to leave too) Cross your heart and pray (hope for the best) The ocean will take us all the way in... (everything will work out or if we follow our own path) First we are ever to fall off of the earth... (a feeling that has never been felt before on earth, something secred, unusul, different from what everyone else did) We could be...soon as our needs are fed (we can do what we want now) You'll give in to me and the whole heartache ( something to do with this couple during the adventure) Makes me feel alive, same typical offering ( i guess he's getting bored of this ride) And you always knew we make it all the way in... (you knew we would end up different) ....It could be soon...as.... The carnivals empty, I need you to take me home...(this isn't fun anymore...i want to go back) God help! (thing's get really bad and it seem's like theres no esCAPE)
- BY ELITE
i think bloody cape is about two young lovers that travel from mexico to USA as illegal aliens. "Well do you wanna wait or leave with me tonight Cross your heart and pray The ocean will take us all the way in." he wants to escape from their troubles (maybe they commited a crime in mexico) and run to the united states. "First we are ever to fall off of the earth... We must be the... First ones in the world to fall off of the earth" but it feels like they will get arrested anyway, but maybe they´ll make it. "We could be...soon as our needs are fed You'll give in to me and the whole heartache Makes me feel alive, same typical offering And you always knew we make it all the way in... " when they get there it will be allright, and the girl really believes they will make it. "god help!"
- BY danne_d87@hotmail.com
For some reason or other, bloody cape sounds to me like a couple of outcasts who want to get into college. they're worried the "ocean" wont take them all in the way in, even though all the ships have sailed, meaning all their classmates have already gone to college. when Chino says that they have fallen off the earth he means that they are the only ones in the world to fail. it's the usual feeling of failure, that you are the only one who has ever failed. it's a feeling of loneliness. it could be soon, soon they would be able to know weather or not they made it into college, enev though they always knew the ocean would let them all the way in. in the end, only one of them has made it, but the other one finds the carnival empty, is rejected, and needs to be taken home. now there is only one outcast left, and he's all alone.

I believe this song tells the story of Columbus, as described in an earlier post, as a metaphor for the effect of drugs, which would be consistent with the lyrics to Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event. ‘’High on the waves you made for us’’ (from the next song) I believe the recurring image of the ocean represents the vast hole of the drug world: deep, lonely and unforgiving if you do not take care of yourself. Hence, in this song, the narrator watches all the boats sail off to be consumed by the ocean, the drugs, and unaware of the danger, he feels compelled to go along with the other potential victims, as an escape from reality (the use of the term pray, as in ‘’need”). Notice though that he is bringing along someone else with him. Perhaps this song is describing the kind of relationship that revolves completely around the use of drugs? ‘’It makes me feel alive, same typical offering’’ The sensation of having been in the same space before, and expecting to feel elated, sedated or whatever else. The second verse basically states the primary importance of the chemical, without which the relationship cannot function: ‘’We could be… soon as our needs are fed, you’ll give in to me and the whole heartache’’. But eventually he sinks in too far, enough to fall off of the earth, which to me represents that sort of involuntary, complete and utter detachment from the entire world, ''depersonalization''. And by the end, the carnival is over, he’s had his fun, but now he is alone and must face the consequences of his actions. He asks for help to be taken home… but nobody there, so his plea goes out to God, unsurprisingly enough. He’s lost everything: his companion, his place and himself . That sort of animal, instinctive and cry when you feel like you’ve lost your mind… The sound of a wounded being, drowning: ‘’God help me!’’

ANNIVERSARY OF AN UNINTERESTING EVENT
I think "Anniversary Of An Uninteresting Event" is about the moon leaving the solar system. "No more gold lights for the queen earth to keep you warm in your kingdom" - no more rays from the sun on to the moon. "high on the waves you make for us" the moon causes waves to happen. "but now since you left have the waves come" - the moon left so there are no more waves. "the rockets rain is keeping you warm in your deathbed" - the moon is being considered dead and when the rockets depart from the moon the sparks and gases from rockets are the only thing keeping it warm. "to nadja, love - jesus" - i think it might be a letter from jesus to the moon, mabey Nadja is the moon's name of some sort and is asking the moon to come back.
- BY walther522@yahoo.com
I think this song is about the death of a female loved one important to Camillo, the "queen" of his "earth" .No longer alive in her "kingdoms", she doesn't feel the sun's warmth or see the rays of light, "No more gold lights...to keep you warm". Chino uses the concept of the moon's gravitational pull on the earth to portray the effect this person had on him, "but not since you left have the waves come" - thing's can't go on as normal with out her, the world wont go on spinning, the tides will not come.He uses water and space as a metaphors, "rockets rain" which creates the idea of a shower of stars, heavenly and ethereal, washing over her in her "deathbed". The religious imagery is continued with the line "love - Jesus". I think this is a beautiful, melodic song and the emotion is raw and detectable in Chino's voice.
- BY slitwristbarbie@msn.com
This song is about the loss of a loved one, and the effect it leaves on those who are still around. It is about the inability to let go. The lyrics suggest a beautiful world that has been taken away "No more gold lights for the queen earth". Also, the fun of the entire world is gone because they used to be "High on the waves you made for us" but now since the person is gone, so are the waves and the fun. The memories remain even though it is over."And the rockets rain is keeping you wet in your deathbed" The wet deathbed suggests freshness as if it is a constant reminder. Listen to the song and imagine the most beautiful world possible, and imagine it is taken away and everything ends, leaving you in a dark barren world with nothing but memories.
- BY the_key_69@hotmail.com
The song opens up, eery and mysterious, like the aftermath of a tragedy. This tragedy, is the end of the earth. This tragedy, is the end of all things to come, and the beginning of all things to end; This is Doomsday. “No more gold lights, for the queen earth... To keep you warm, in your kingdoms.” The storyteller is basically stating, the world cannot survive without sunlight, sunlight is what makes living possible, and now since the skies have been covered from a nuclear winter by volcanoes and war, we cannot keep warm in our “kingdoms” or “cities”. “High, on the waves, you make for us! But not, since you left, have the waves come!” We are amazed by the worlds beauty and how the cycle of the sun and moon create waves on the earth, and now that they have gone, the beauty within the ocean has died, and now it has become a dead sea. And there is no hope of it returning. “The bar is dead... and the rockets rain... is keeping you wet in your deathbed.” The Earth’s population has decreased, bar’s are dead, and cities are empty. War has broken out, and rockets keep destroying what little we have left; the earth is in it’s deathbed, waiting for death, suffering...from us. “So high..on the waves.. You made for us! And not, since you left... have the waves come.” Trying to remember how it was when the earth was fine, and there was no war, trying to remember the beautiful waves...but opening our eyes, we are back to realization that there are no more beautiful waves, and that our fate is near. “High...on the waves, you made for us! Not since you left have the waves come..(have the waves come)” The thought is a recurring thing in everyone’s mind, and now, they are just waiting for someone to pull the plug, on them, on the earth, and on life. The song is telling the earth it’s fate, and showing the tragedy that lies ahead, the song fades out, leaving you breathless and stunned, revealing the storyteller . This storyteller is Jesus Christ. To Nadja, Love - Jesus
-BY Jake Adams
This song is about the fall of man.(No more gold lights, for the Queen earth)this means that there is no more pure, good and kind-hearted beings on this earth(to keep you warm,in your kingdoms..high)As we all know, what pleases Jesus are the good beings.(on the waves you make for us)In this line, the word "waves" refers to trials. Jesus gives us trials in our life and we must struggle.(but not since you left have the waves come)But though, many have forget and turn back their faith so they face difficult trials that seems there is no more solutions over it because they lack faith.(The bar is dead)I think the word "bar" here refers to money, and money is the cause of all unearthly like crimes, robberies, etc (and the rockets rain)And this will lead to conflicts, war, terrorism. (is keeping you wet)and is bringing us close...(in your deathbed..high) close to our death. (To Nadja,Love-Jesus) If you reverse the name "Nadja" it will be "Ajdan" which means "Adan" and as we all know Adan is the first man created by God and Adan is the symbol of mankind. Which is a strong basis that this is a message of Jesus to mankind!

MOANA
When I hear "Moana", I start to think of a concert and a musican listen int he crowd. (There is a possiblity that Chino is talking about Moana Maniapoto, a famous international singer.) It sounds like a musican is listening to her and wondering what kind of style she has. "What's your taste?" Might even be some kind of admiration toward Moana by using her fans as 'an empire' but it sounds almost romantic when Chino begs "show me...come...Let me know what your like." Then she walks off stage as calm as she came on, truely spiritual. This is what makes me believe Moana Maniapoto is the singer he sings about...Her music carries a spiritual song and voice. "hopelessly devoted"....Any true fan feels hoplessly devoted...As much as I and all of you to the deftones...Nuno you know what I mean!
- BY Jesse Haney
Personally I think that Moana is about sex, but the girl is just having intercourse as if it doesn’t mean a thing, and she does it in a way that means nothing to her. “Somehow calm as she walks on stage” – the guy is nervous, while the girl is calm. He becomes involved with her, and enjoys her and really loves her. He wants her to know if he is pleasing her, because he actually wants to. “Let me know what you're like...let me... Know what you're like... What's your taste?” He also wants to know what she would want in order for him to please her if he isn’t already. It continues to explain how he is really into her for her. And at the end it says: “Somehow calm as she walks offstage” – she is done, and like the beginning the intimacy meant nothing to her, because she is “calm”, while the guy wants to feel more.
- BY Kelly Gerin
When I hear Moana, the lyrics put me in mind of a stripper performing. From the time she walks out "somehow calm you walk on stage" to how she hyptnotizes the crowd and makes them feel excited "I bet she carves your heart". I think the line "Her entire empire becomes your taste" refers to however she is dressed and how it kinda becomes the viewers fetish for the time while she's performing. Whoever is watching this stripper, kinda 'falls in love' with her, "let me know what your like". And as for the "Hopelessly devoted" part, a lot of strippers are in the business as a last resort, to make ends meet, to get through college or to get quick money to raise their kid. They're hopelessly devoted to the reason they are in it for.
- BY Phoenix
My belief is that Moana is about an orgasm a woman gets after receiving cunnilingus, nicknaming the orgasm “Moana”. “Somehow calm as she walks on stage…” is the beginning, when a woman first goes through the feeling and is in orgasmic shock. The orgasm is beginning, and now it's “entire empire becomes her taste…” the taste that the man is receiving from giving her oral sex. “Your taste...show me...come!” is the man’s loving want for the women to be pleasured, and he wants her, frankly, to come. “I bet she carves your heart when she walks onstage, Her empire slowly becomes your place...”, meaning how the orgasm controls the woman, increasing her heart rate, making her moan and squirm and enjoy the pleasure. The man cannot control himself, and he wants his lover to enjoy this moment. He constantly wants to “Know what you’re like in your place”, ‘place’ referring to the woman’s vagina. The music then goes to the pause, giving the woman more time to enjoy the feeling. “Somehow calm as she walks offstage, and entire empire recall your face...”, is the ending of the orgasm, and the man is describing the face the woman makes, a face of ecstacy. I love the ending of “(hopelessly devoted)”, because once a woman recieves a “Moana” from oral sex, she’ll be hooked.
- BY Robert Rodriguez II
To me the song Moana is about an obsession, an obsession between a guy and a girl, better said a celebrity type.(by celebrity i mean an actual celebrity or someone that this person has put on an altar and worshiped them) "her entire empire becomes your taste", this means that everything thing this girl does and has this guy worships and makes it his thing to make sure he knows everything about her or as much as he can. "your taste...show me...come" , this i interpreted as the guy wanting to be a part of her life, wanting to get her, wanting to be a part of anything she does. the line ,"i bet she carves your heart, as she walks onstage" means that everytime this person has a type of encounter with "her" he just falls deeper into his obsession. last but not least "somehow calm as she walks offstage an entire empire recall your face" this is when the guy realizes that he will never have her and is just destroyed by it the look on his face says it all. i think that this meaning could also be switched around with the girl being obsessed with the guy but i think that it happens most with guys , we get fixated on a girl, become obsessed and it takes forever for us to fall out of the obsession, even if we never spoke to the girl, guys know what im talking about.
