Deftones @ "Clutch Cargos" Detroit, MI - USA 22 Oct 2004 www.deftonesworld.com Dredg opened the show. They came out, and the crowd was shouting "Dredg" chants, which they also did after the set. I was pleasantly surprised. I LOVE Dredg, but I thought only about 20 people would've even heard of em. They played a 30-min set w/ 4 brand new songs, and then they ended w/ "Yatahaze." Deftones came up next. The first few songs consisted of the crowd singing loud as hell and just pushing forward, but when "My Own Summer" was played, the pit went BONKERS! Chino did that song from the crowd (as usual). I was really glad to hear "Around the Fur" cuz I haven't heard that one live in a long time. Their Cure cover was amazing, but the highlight of the show was DEFINITELY "Engine #9" w/ the "Wicked" part near the end. "Teenager" was an unexpected surprise, but cool. After that they played a song that sounded like a Suicidal Tendencies cover to me. They ended w/ "Minus Blindfold" and then came out to do an encore of "Minerva" & "Bloody Cape," which was a great song to end with. I watched the whole show from the balcony right above the soundboard. Not only does that provide a great view of the stage and the INSANE pits, but we could see the setlist that their sound guy was using. They followed the setlist for about half the show and then mixed things up. They had to end the show by 8:30pm in order to empty out the venue for a dance party, so they had to cut their set a few songs short. The setlist had them doing "Be Quiet & Drive" just before the encore, but they didn't play it. I believe "7 words" was also on the list, but not played. The songs they played were as follows: feiticiera change my own summer nosebleed hexagram around the fur rickets if only tonight we could sleep (The Cure cover) rx queen birthmark engine #9/wicked digital bath teenager cover song (or at least I think it's a cover) minus blindfold --encore-- minerva bloody cape peace - Kevin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another excellent show. The band interacted with the crowd in Detroit a lot more than in Cincinnati. Cheng was also a little bit more reserved, which I was pleased with. He is just too over the top lately. Pretty much the same setlist as in Cincinnati, except Seven Words and One Weak were not played. Teenager and Birthmark were played in place of those two which was sweet. And the highlight of the night, by far, especially for me was Subliminal. I was yelling to Steph the entire night to play it, and finally he heard me, looked at me and gave me the devil horns, smiled and started to play it, with no distortion. Then Chino noticed and said "Aww, what song is that?!" As soon as he said that, Abe came in with the drumb beat and Steph hit the distortion. The rest is history. Chino signaled for the circle pit a during the chorus. So sweet. Then a couple more songs passed and I yelled "Thank you Steph!" and he pointed at me and smiled with chink eyes. Deftinately the coolest part of the evening, especially for me. Still doesn't top meeting Chino the night before, but still fucking awesome. Nick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Great Show Tonight was a good time, my friend who was in Prison for most of the Deftones first 3 releases was able to see a band that helped him get through his incarceration. It was just as fun for me to see him have such a great time. That was probably the most enjoyable thing of the evening. To the band: They were tight. Chino is a fucking slob, by the end lf the tour, I'm sure he will have shed a few pounds. The set was great, big highlights were RX Queen, which I used to sing to my daughter to get her to go to bed, that was weird hearing the song live, somewhat emotional for a second. They also played Rickets! You don't hear that song much. There was also a fucking blistering cover of Suicidal Tendencies "Subliminal" It was amazing. They also played "Teenager". Big disappointments were: NO DAMONE They have been playing that song almost every night it's the only song I have never seen them play....The only one! There was no "Be Quiet and Drive" either....???Probably my favorite song....but was absent tonight. So for the 20 sumthing time I've seen them, it was still good. Here is the set-list, the first 11 or 12 songs are in order, the rest are kinda sketchy: 1. Feiticeira 2. Change 3. Summer 4. Nosebleed 5. Hexagram 6. Fur 7. Rickets 8. If Only Tonight We Could Sleep 9. RX Queen 10. Birthmark 11. Enigine #9 (sketchy after this) 12. Teenager 13. Digital Bath 14. Subliminal (Suicidal Cover)-Totally not planned, Stephen just started struming it, then they jammed it 15. Minus Blindfold ___Encore____ 16. Minerva 17. Bloody cape mjernigan@wowway.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Deftones played at Clutch Cargos in Pontiac, Michigan on Friday, Oct. 22. Dredg opened (I missed their set), but the 'tones came on stage at around 7:10 to a packed house at the remodeled, former-church. I've seen them play 5 other times, but this show had a much differentvibe then the previous shows that I've seen. The band came out playing Feiticeira and then went right into Change. While these songs are heavy in their own right, it didn't send the crowd into a frenzy as say Hexagram does. (the song they have opened with the majority of this tour's dates) Things picked up when My Own Summer was the third song of the night. Overall the set was very tight. Chino didn't have the mic problems that seem to plague him on other tour stops, and his voice was clear and distinct the entire evening. Stephen and Chi were on point too, but their mood seemed to be almost "mellow" as they played some older, slower Adrenaline-era songs. The highlight of the night however, WAS the set list as a lot of older songs were played. Rickets, Engine #9 (with Wicked in the middle), Minus Blindfold, and Birthmark were great suprises for the mainly younger, "White Pony"/"Deftones" era crowd. My personal highlight was the guys playing RX Queen. I have seen them a handful of times, and I own a ton of bootleg shows, but have never heard that song played live before. Needless to say it was pretty amazing, esp. Abe's drumming. Another highlight was Teenager, as Chino crouched on stage and Steph and Frank did the synth. and turntable work. The band also played the Cure cover and another new song that was said to be a Fugazi cover. (don't quote me on that, however) The latter was a much faster, punk-influenced song. The band did an encore of Minerva and finished with Bloody Cape. The set was just over and hour and 20 mins, but due to Clutch Cargos/Pontiac having an 8:30pm curfew, the show was a little on the short side. The t-shirts they were selling were pretty cool, esp. the ones that were like the Coors Beer cans. They are grey or yellow and say 'TONES on the front. $28 bucks though. Ouch. Overall it was a great show, and I can't wait for their new material. As I walked out, the guy @ the sound board gave me the set list. (note: for whatever reason, it's not 100% accurate though...as they changed things up during the show...added/subtracted songs. I listed them, but I noted the questionable ones with a "*" below.): Feiticeira Change (ITHOF) My Own Summer Nosebleed Hexagram Around the Fur Rickets If Only Tonight We Could Sleep-Cure Cover Rx Queen Birthmark Un-determined song-(Fugazi cover?)* 7 Words* Digital Bath Teenager Minus Blindfold Engine #9 (w/Wicked) Be Quiet and Drive* -------------------------------- Minerva Bloody Cape -Cy bakerut@yahoo.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
