Deftones @ "Next Stage" Dallas, TX - U.S.A. 07 Nov 2003 www.deftonesworld.com Well the show last night was different for me because I was at the show the previous night in Austin and the show rocked. This show was very difficult for me personally and emotionally. I dated this girl for two years and alot of our relationship was based on the Deftones music. I cried during some of the songs, but Deftones music is awesome therapy. First off I hated the venue....NextStage has like 300 people working there...checking your tickets, telling you to sit down, get out of the isle.....its total bullshit. I had seats up in the 300 section, but I managed to make it all the way to the pit by the time the Deftones hit the stage. This show sounded really well and they played a longer show this night. Chino was wearing the same clothes he has been wearing during the whole tour. Its good to see the guys really jumping around again on stage! Chi was really thanking the other bands and Dallas for "always being cool to them" everytime they play here. All in all this was just another amazing Deftones show and it makes my 10th time to see them live and I loved every minute of it and I can't wait for them to hit Texas again!!! Here's the Set list Minerva Bloody Cape Be Quiet and Drive Shove it Bored MX Digital Bath Mascara Around the Fur Feiticeira Battle Axe Hexagram Minus Blindfold FIREAL Headup ------------------ change (in the house of flies) 7 words (intro) engine # 9 7 words (outro) Russell Campbell Waco, TX ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quite honestly, I couldn't tell you the order of the songs that were played where I saw the Deftones this past Friday the 7th of November at Next Stage in Grand Prairie, Texas. But I will tell you that it was the absolute best show I think I've ever seen them play. And if by any chance you could post this, I would like to apologize for scratching Chino when I was crowdsurfing and I grabbed him. :) Faab@Charter.net ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- omg. i cant even describe. the feeling. i got their @ 2pm. (I was the first one there, hos. ), and walked around to see if the band was there. no one was around, and i couldn't sneak in, so i just waited. DefStar and Damone from the messageboard showed up as well, and i hung out with them most of the 4+ hours we waited in the cold. When the doors were opening, i was pretty pissed because they opened the doors for the kids that barely got there, when me and the guys were waiting for so long. we got behind in the pit lane, and i was mega pissed. it didn't really matter though, because me and my friend ran to the front, and i got the best seat in the house. Very center, very front, not but 1 foot from the stage. It was so badass, although there was this kind of annoying guy next to me. Preshow, this guy was handing out backstage passes. He looked at me when i yelled, and offered me one, but asked if i was 21. I said yes, and he wanted to see my ID. i pulled it out and gave it to him, and he noticed i was 18, and gave it to some other guy. i was pretty peeved about that. Denali was beautiful. Someone descibed them as Team Sleep sound, and they were right. Her voice was melodic and peaceful. Very nice sound. Poison the Well was so gay. Screamo Hardcor crap with no sound at all. I didn't move at all, and i think that pissed some people off since i was Pit FrontCenter. But they sucked ass, so meh. Deftones. Deftones, deftones, deftones. Watching them come on stage was so grand an event. The whole show i was listening and singing and getting involved. Chino climbed into the crowd thrice, during My Own Summer, Hexagram, and Engine #9. During Hexagram and Engine, he was right next to me and i held his hand holding him up both times. He screamed right into my face, and i felt him shake when he screamed. The energy put into the show was fantastic and joygasmic. Setlist: Minerva Bloody Cape My Own Summer BQAD Bored w/ Clint Eastwood Digital Bath Feiticiera Mascara Around the Fur MX Hexagram Battle Axe Fireal Headup Encore: Change (in the house of flies) 7 Words pt1 Engine#9 7 Words pt2 And the night didn't end. After the show, me and my friend tried so hard to get into the backstage area. We tried clibning gate, but ended up just getting cut up. We found this garbage can area, but as soon as i got to the top, security got me and told me to go away. But not an hour later, we tried again, and made it into the complex. We walked around and found the Stage area. But this guy saw me and asked who i was. I told him i was crew (since i basically had on the same Khaki shorts and Deftones Hoodie they did), but i think he knew better. We ran off after he noticed we weren't with the crew, and found a new entrance, but again were caught by security and kicked out. After pain and heartache, we just waited outside. 2 Buses left, and people said that the guys were in the buses. We chased after the busses, but couldn't keep up so we went back to our cars. When we did, we saw that their was a crowd circling someone. We went to the crowd, and there was Chino! I got to hang out with him, and got my Minerva vinyl and Deftones ST cover signed. It was beautiful. Overall, i know this is drastic, but that was the best day of my life. 10/10 robbybobby85@yahoo.com --------------------------------------------------------------- This was my second time to see the Deftones, and it was by far the better of the two. The first time i saw them i caught them on the Summer Sanitarium tour and they only played for 45 min. It was good, but i needed more. I definitely got more on Friday night in Grand Prarie, TX. I made the 3 hour drive from Shreveport, LA and it was hella worth it. Denali was ok, I guess. The chic singer kinda sounded the same on pretty much every song, but it wasnt too bad. Poison the Well was pretty crazy. They didnt play but for 30 min though. But then the muthafuckin DEFTONES came on stage and they opened up with Minerva. Then they killed Bloody Cape man, that song is awesome live. Then out of nowhere they played FIREAL! I love that song and i did not expect to hear it live. When he started screaming "No fist can fucking save you from!" it was hella tight. When they played Hexagram Chino leaped into the crowd and started screaming "WORSHIP!". Man that song kicked ass. Mx was and awesome performance too. I loved it when they played Around the Fur and Chino when ape shit at the end of it. It was great. When they came back for the encore they played Change, then they played 7 Words. In the middle of 7 Words they stopped and played the entire length of Engine No 9, then finished 7 Words. The show was unbelieveable. One of the best times I have ever had. The Deftones are still by far the best band in the world. Heres the songs in some kinda order: Minerva Bloody Cape (kicked ass) My Own Summer Be Quiet & Drive Bored Mascara Around the Fur Feitceira Mx Fireal (this song was amazing) Headup Digital Bath Hexagram (kicked ass) Battle-axe Change 7 Words Engine No 9 Everybody sucks compared to the Deftones. Deftonesworld.com rules and Nuno you do a great job keeping up with everything. PEACE! JOSHUa ---------------------------------------------------------------- well i arrived at nexstage in dallas bright and early at 9:30. i had been waiting to see the deftones headline a show for years and this was my opportunity so there was no way i would not be the first there. i was freezing my ass off. it was so cold and rained quite a bit. well finally at about two more people showed up. they didnt talk to me at all so i didnt get company besides the two friends i brought until about five when some people i met from the thursday concert the night before showed up. anyways they were going to open up about 12 doors to let people inside and by the blessing of god they opened up the my door first. my friends and i managed to get inside befor anyone other doors were opened. i went a bought a deftones shirt that i had never seen so i was pretty excited about that. but it was made of some pussy ass material and easily ripped during the show. anyways i got on the floor front and center and noticed how small the floor was. 750 people the rest was seating. denali came on and they sounded so much better than the mp3's i dl'd. they reminded me of a rock version of bjork because the girl had an amazing voice. poison the well came on. i begged god to take my life at this point because they sucked so bad. every song was a soft intro that would suddenly become loud as death metal. you couldnt understand anyting the singer was saying and he spit everywhere. finally after my prayers were answered they ended. soon after a little setting up the deftones came on promptly at 9:15. the crowd didnt get crazy like pushing and shoving but instead screamed cries of happiness which was just fine with me. of course they opened with minerva. i loved it but i really wanted chino to be mobile. so i was looking forward to another song. i cant go through every song cause i didnt write them all down but here are some highlights.chino asked if it was anyone's b day and i raised my hand but then he announced he would have to see some id. since mine wasnt for a couple of days i put my hand down. during my own summer chino did his signature jump in the crowd and sing which i was insanely jealous during because he went to the right of me. soon all of the lights went out and chino sang mascara which was amazing i love that song and his distorting mic was badass. when they played mx the crowd sang abe's wife's part once then chino sang that part the next time around while we sang his part. that was real cool. digital bath was incredible he hit the high notes like a champ.before i knew it they broke into hexagram, my fav song on the new album, and once again chino came into the crowd and went to the left to me closer than the first time. i was able to hold his hand a little after a long stretch but i still wished he was closer. soon they all went off stage except for stef and the crowd was screaming and yelling with happiness from the flawless performance. then chino came out with his guitar and they started to play change. during change chino looked directly down at me and my friend ant signaled for us to be louder. they did an awesome job but i started to fear that it would be the last song and if it wasnt i was afraid that it wouldnt be 7 words. when the song ended chino walked up in front of my friend and me and we started yelling "7 words" he looked at us and smiled but didnt say anything. so we repeated yelling and then everyone started chanting "7 words 7words" then chino was again looked at the two of us and put up seven fingers and we did it back and then while he turned away and started to walk toward abe he said "so is that what you want to hear" then the song soon kicked in. i was in heaven. literally the happiest moment in my life but it got better. i dont think chino planned it because he didnt get on the ground then climb the rail instead he just jumped sraight onto from the stage and landed right in front of me and my friends. then the song switched to engine no. 9 if i remember correctly. i held his hand during the song to help him balance during which i got some amazing pictures. next the song kicked back into 7words and he started screaming "suck suck suck suck" and everyone was going crazy. the song ended and chino thanked everyone and abe came by and shook my hand. i felt like i got a glimpse of heaven. i even managed to get a guitar pick. it was said to see that my shirt ripped but i soon convinced myself that it's just "cool" concert scar. the best birthday i have ever had. nothing is better than seeing your favorite band headline a show for the first time. JBS52@aol.com ----------------------------------------------------- -SuPa- of Wills Point, TX NextStage @ Grand Prarie, TX 11/7 This was the most awesome concert!! It was all that I had expected and a hell of a lot more! It was pitch black and you could see their figures walking out on stage, then you could see a curtain pull away in the back revealing a screen. The screen lights up red, and a spotlight comes down onto Stephen. My adrenaline is pupming and the blood is being rushed to my head. I felt like I was gonna pass out when they all kicked in playing. Now, this is to everyone that has said the "The deftones SUCK live." ... You are out of you're freakin' mind!! The set list: Minerva Bloody Cape My Own Summer (shove it) Be Quiet and Drive (far away) <<--- the best ever Bored (w/ Clint Eastwood) Feiteceira Digital Bath Around the Fur Mx Mascara Hexagram Fireal Battle-axe Headup Encore: Change (in the house of flies) 7 Words/ Engine #9/ 7 Words Let me explain the Encore... They played Change and after that they started playing 7 words. Well, when it got to the break when Chino says, "Shut up, you don't know me..." The theatre blacks out and all of a sudden Stephen starts playing Engine #9. They play through Engine #9 and then it's blacked out again with the spot light on Chino and they finish 7 words from where the left off, from "Shut up, you don't know me..." --------------------------------------------------------------- I have seen deftones many times in Texas, and they proved once again why they keep me coming. They rocked out the new Nextstage Arena in Grand Prairie, TX. I remember when I first say them when I was 17 in 1996 at the Galaxy Club in Dallas, it's amazing how far they've come, and they keep getting better and better. Poison the Well was great too, they played a lot off of their new album, but they played one of my favorites off Tear From the Red, "Botchla." Here's the setlist, in some kind of order: Minerva My Own Summer Be Quiet and Drive Bored Around the Fur Mx Digital Bath Bloody Cape Mascara Hexagram Fireal Feiticeira Headup Encore: Change 7 Words/ Engine #9 The end of the show was great, they started playing 7 Words, then they went into Engine #9, and finally played the end of 7 Words. Overall one of my favorite shows of the year. jnature@yahoo.com --------------------------------------------------------- Deftones really surprised me. Being a hardcore fan of the tones for about 4-5 years now, it's been awesome watching them grow. Unlike other bands that get bigger and bigger, deftones reamain loyal and independent. They are by far one the best bands that has every come, and for sure the best band to make it big without getting too much air play and publicity. Anyways, here's a recap of the show. This was my second time to see them. The first time I saw them was when they were doing their "back to school" tour with incubis & taproot and that was such a badass show. So I was expecting this to top it. As you already know, they played @ next stage in grand prarie which was a really weird venue for them to play at. I was a bit disapointed in some ways. One of them being the fact that nearly the whole venue was seating. It was such a small pit but I guess better for me since I had pit tickets. The stage was far off so a lot of the time I missed out on seeing Chi and the rest of the band Jam. I've been to a lot of damn shows yet never surfed....and deftones finally pushed me to do it and it was bad ass. As for the band, they rocked of course. I did notice some differences in this show in comparison to the last. One was that their sound, although good, but not near as defined as I once heard. The guitars were hard to hear at times..... like what was going on and everything, but everyone new all the moments so it didn't matter. Chino showed me how much of a badass he still is....it's been a while since the last show so I have trouble forgetting how great it actually was. Everyone has correctly stated the set list so I wont bother but I will say my fav songs played were "bored, my own summer (everyone screamin shove it), feiticeria(probably the best, the drum roll kicked ass right into stop I'm drunk or what i like to sing 'fuck I'm drunk'. Oh, the ending combination of 7 words and engine number 9 was badass. Some other notes: pit was fucking crazy..... lost my shoe but was able to get it back on the way to the exit......chino didn't play guitar during change(interesting)...some girl jumped on stage a flashed the crowd and chino sorta laugh....and they didn't have any real back drops except a cool screen that just lit up different colors which made it kinda erotic. BADASS SHOW! -rob
