Chino's most important
object: His belt.
Wildest thing he have
ever done on stage:
Diving into the drum set, he says.
Most memorable stage
experience: When a girl
in the front row got too close, she decided that she was going to bite him
in a place that he was going to feel for the next week...
Chino's name:
His mom gave him the nickname 'Chino' when he was still an infant because of his strongly
Chinese baby features (in Spanish, 'Chinito' means Chinese). It was also his
Grandpa's nickname, so it just seemed to stick. According to Chinese astrology, 1973 was the year of the Ox, so that means Chino is
'bright, patient, an inspiration to others, happy by one's self, and possesses the
ability to grind nappy quarter pipe coping with much style.' His mom
remembers him as a happy and quiet kid who has always liked music.

Chino
Moreno, is the voice of Deftones. "Chino" in spanish means
"chinese" and "Moreno" means "brunet"...
He was asked to join the band while he sang a Danzig cover in Carpenter's garage.
He's known by his capacity of taking his voice to the limit, from the
strong and tuned screams (defscreams) to the hypnotic and sweet melody
that characterizes him. Influenced by Punk/New Wave, with such bands as:
• Bad Brains (Deftones have a cover of Bad Brain's "Right
Brigade") - "The
first band I heard that made heavy music with a sense of depth. It's very
spiritual lyrically. I think subconsiuosly we take a lot from them."
• The Smiths and specially the vocalist, Morissey (Deftones covered The
Smith's "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I want")
• Weezer (a band that he would agree to join if he was invited, of
course, just if Deftones weren't here; Deftones have a lot of Weezer
covers like "Say It Ain't So", "In the Garage",
"Holiday", "Tired of Sex"...)
• The Cure (the band he first saw live on the Disintegration' Tour when
he was 15 years old)
• PJ Harvey (the singer he would like to tour with 'cause she has been a
really inspiration) - "Such
a huge voice coming out of that little person. I cope a lot of her throat
noises"
• Culture Club (Chino disguised as Boy George when he was younger during
Halloween)
• Duran Duran (Deftones played Duran Duran's covers like "The
Chauffeur" and "Nightboat")
• Danzig (he doesn't know why he stills loving Danzig, he just thought
of him as being some cool ass dude)
• Metallica (he loved "Master of Puppets" and "...And
Justice For All" he used to listen with Abe during classes that
album)
He's always appearing as guest in some bad ass bands like Soulfly,
Sevendust, Korn, Strife, Hesher and Cypress Hill. He is also in a side
project called "Team Sleep". Team Sleep songs, like
"Teenager" are featured on White Pony.

Chi
Cheng , the bassist of the band. We really don't listen very well this
instrument and some people don't give the deserved value that it really
deserves, but I can tell you that without it the band doesn't sound like
Deftones! Chi his one of the greatest on his art. Groovy when he wants to,
melodic when Chino needs the most...
One of his favorite hobbies is reading that's why is called the
intellectual/philosopher of the group. Chi is a Zen Buddhist.
Chi likes reggae, jazz, old blues and is also a metal man, Iron Maiden is
his favorite band. It was an Iron Maiden record that he first ever bought,
it was an Iron Maiden gig that he first saw. He considers Steve Harris,
Iron Maiden's bassist, is bigger influence on his career.
Now on Deftones he describes it like a "fairy tale" because he
never dreamed that those kids that just liked to have a jam once in a
while, could reach fame has they reach.
Chi released on July, 2000 his debut solo album. It's called "The
Bamboo Parachute" and it's a collection of 25 riveting and eclectic
poems... "It is pretty wacky stuff. I'll read something to my wife,
and she'll look at me and say, I don't know what the hell you're talking
about" (chi)
If Chi was invited to tour with someone, he would chose Bob Marley, and a
woman to date maybe Laureen Hill from the Fuggees.
Chi's favorite albums are: 'Jimmy Cliff - The Harder They Come' -
"
In my humble opinion, the greatest reaggae album of all time"
'Thelonious Monk - Straight No Chaser' - "I'm
not sure anyone pushed the envelope - musically, mentally or spiritually -
with as much class and inviduality as Monk. On of the heaviest albums ever
written."
Chi was most influenced by:
'Charles Bukowski' - "He's
about the beauty of being honest and raw. It's not always glamorous, but
it's real. We should get a dose of reality occasionally - It's part of the
whole."

Stef
Carpenter, is Deftones guitarist. One of the best in the world. With this
guy we can only receive a big dose of professionalism and sobriety. With
and along Chino's voice, Stef gives such a spirit to the band...rhythm, on
songs with such power as "7words" or psychoses riffs that takes
on everyone to the other side like on "Fist". Riff after riff, string
after string...oh God! Thanks Stef for what you have given to us! The first song he strummed guitar to was "Round And Around" by
RATT.
He listens to rap, for the most part. But outside of rap, he loves the
heaviest music that could be made--his two favorite heavy bands are
Meshuggah and Fear Factory.
Mettalica, Slayer, Antrax, Faith no More are some of his metal influences
but bands like Depeche Mode or Duran Duran were huge models for his
career.
His first record was one from the greats Black Sabbath and the first live
performance he assisted was Corrosion of Conformity.
Stef has a side project called Kush, featuring Christian and Raymond from
Fear Factory and B Real from Cypress Hill.
Touring with the Beatles on their trippy phase was a dream if he was asked
for a band to tour with. "Touring" with a woman?...maybe Naomi
Campbell...
Stef's favorite albums are: 'Meshugga - Chaosphere' -
"The
most brutal record i've heard, from second one to second last. It left me
wondering where the hell i'd been the whole time."
'Depeche Mode - Ultra' - "They've
settled into their groove. Every song makes you go, "Damn." It
drop you to your knees."
'Faith No More -The Real Thing' - "It
opened my mind to the blending of atmospheres. It was always heavy, but it
had a dynamic. You never knew what was coming next."
'Van Halen - Fair Warning' - "Riff
heaven from beginning to end. I just hear testosterone, an attitude of
confidence."

Abe
Cunningham, on the drums. Tuned and always on time Abe's drums gives, as
the others members, what the band needs on that moment of the song. No
more to say, perfect is the word and it stills not enough... Abe started
to like to be a guitarist but his step-dad always played drums and so, he
got in loved with drums, he says that with drums we can do such different
things, that with any other instruments is possible.
He's another Iron Maiden fan, as a drummer he considers Stewart Copeland
(The Police), Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell as the greatest. For Abe's one
of the most important thing on Deftones ascension was the chance to tour
with Bad Brains, a band that he kept a place on his heart.
Abe's wife Annalynn made a guest appearance on "Mx" singing
along with Chino Moreno.
Abe is a beer consumer, he really loves beer. He also loves 007, the
secret agent...he's a James Bond freak.
And his kind of woman is Winona Rider.

Frank
Delgado is the man behind the strange noises. He's the DJ on service. He
made for example that solo on the end of "Fireal" and "Headup", the "breathing" on the begin of "Minus
Blindfold" and some scratchy on "My Own Summer" and more of
course. Now with the "White Pony" he's an official Deftones
member, he's almost on every track of "White Pony" and he sure
gave a bit more of development and originality. He started in a band
called "Socialistics" from Los Angeles (they used to open
concerts for Deftones), and swiftly Deftones recruited him for some
workings.
