I'll only accept reviews from recent shows! DEFTONES @ THE AXIS, BOSTON (MAY 6th 2003)
I just wanted to give you a quick rundown on the show that just
happened May 6th at the Axis in Boston, MA. I waited in line ALL DAY,
only 70 tickets available at door and yes I was lucky enough to get in.
The deftones sounded great but some interesting details were that rapper,
50 Cent had a concert going on next door at the Avalon. The two buildings
are connected and 50 Cent came out to the side of the Deftones stage
during one of their songs just banging his head, wearing a
Padres (san diego?) shirt. He didn't stick around long but after the deftones
took a quick break Chino sang on the mic "hey shortie, it's your birthday,
gonna drink bacardi like it's your birthday" to a little ditty.
The show was sick overall and most of the material played was off of
adrenaline, even Chino said it that night. Hands down "headup" was the
best song of the night, great crowd participation.

f you weren't deaf by the end of it, you were well on your way, as
Deftones exploded at Axis last night. The Sacramento-based group,
which has sold 4 million records and grew into an arena band on its last
tour, scaled down for a sneak club show to advance its new album,
''Deftones,'' coming out May 20. The sound was anything but scaled down,
though, as Deftones played ferociously overamped, art-rock metal that
shredded eardrums but also had a passionate intensity that was totally captivating.
The band unleashed its unique blend of scream-filled vocals and bruising,
rhythm-section sonics to a packed house of fans that moshed and slam-danced
but generally kept things under control, despite the obvious excitement
of seeing one of heavy-rock's most idolized bands in a tiny setting.
A few bodies flew here and there (and this writer had a pair of glasses
fly across the room after being crunched by a couple of bodies), but that's
the price you can pay when the Deftones are turned loose in such an intimate
setting.
Singer Chino Moreno fired up the crowd with his banshee wails (he dropped to
his knees numerous times and dispensed primal screams that had to be heard to
be believed) and his lyrical psychodramas about struggling onward in a post-modern,
dysfunctional world. He and his cohorts ripped through older Deftones songs
(from ''Feiticeira'' to ''Bored''), while also unveiling some well-received
tunes from the new album. These included the witchy ''Hexagram,'' new single
''Minerva'' (a bludgeoningly hypnotic track with Moreno adding the spiritually
positive coda of ''God bless you all on this earth''), ''Good Morning Beautiful''
(with grinding guitar riffs from Stephen Carpenter), and the crisp, backbeat-driven
''Bloody Cape,'' with Moreno offering the philosophical climax of
''The carnival's empty, I need you to take me home.''
The charismatic Moreno slapped the crowd's outstretched palms all night,
while thanking fans for coming in a genuinely sincere gesture that made one
understand why Deftones inspire such loyalty. Moreno didn't indulge in any
rock-star nonsense. He said, ''Let's have some fun,'' and he meant it.
He also promised a long show and delivered on that as well, setting the table
for a return appearance when Deftones join Metallica's Summer Sanitarium Tour
at Gillette Stadium with Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit on July 6.
It was quite a night on Lansdowne Street, with rap kingpin 50 Cent also
playing a sold-out show next door at Avalon (he went on too late to be reviewed
on deadline). But the metal fans were at Axis to catch Deftones,
and they were not disappointed.

Last nights show at Axis was awesome. They played for about an hour and 40 mins.
Chino looked pretty trashed the whole time and kept rubbing his eyes.
I noticed Chi spit on Stephen a few times, it seemed like it was accidental,
it was a small ass stage and all. Frank just kind of stood in the back for most
of it, and a few times I looked and he wasn't even there. This is the setlist,
in the correct order. There was one new song that I don't know the title of so I
just called it new song:
Deftones Set list 5-6-03 Boston
My Own Summer
Hexagram
Feiticeira
Around the fur
Lotion
Minus Blindfold
New song
Good Morning Beautiful
Bored
Teething
Change

WHAT AN AMAZING SHOW!! I have seen the deftones at regular size venues,
but this place was tiny, they were so close! I made it to the front barricade,
between Chi and Chino the whole time. I was lucky enough to get tickets through
next ticketing at noon the day the day before the show. They opened with my
absolute favorite, My Own Summer, and blasted through a sick setlist, mixing in
all 4 of thier CD's. The new stuff sounded good, but not as heavy as I was
anticipating. Chi was so into Headup, throwing his mic down at the end.
50 Cent was playing right next door, and Chino poked fun at him a few times,
saying they "were the only band playing here tonight" and also sang the obnoxious
chorus of "In Da Club". It was wicked funny. I grabbed Chinos hand a few times
and was actually helping him keep his balance when he came into the crowd.
Frank was also out about half the time and in my opinion is useless in the band.
An amazing show, so glad I didn't blow almost a hundred bucks to see them
play a short setlist ina football stadium this summer! Such a good show,
thier energy is unreal in such a small place. If you missed it and your a true fan,
it sucks to be you!! Peace.
