We got to Austin early and went to eat at this place called Freebirds where the have the biggest buritios that I have ever seen!! Then it was over to the park to check out the dirt mouds and watch some BMX riders catch some air(Ross did you see the size of those fuckin jumps!) Then it was off to the Music Hall to see the Deftones. I've been hearing bad reviews about the opening band Denali. I personally really liked them alot. I can see why Chino picked them to open because the lead singer is a woman and she is a very awesome singer!! I recpect their band for thier artistic creativity. Its hard for any band to open up for the Deftones, but I think thast the crowd responded to them nicely. The next band was Poison the Well!!! I have seen these guys 3 times before so I knew that I wouldnt be dissapointed. They hit the stage with intense fury and the pit opened up and the crowd loved them. They played 4 songs from the new cd "you come before you" and they played 3 songs from" tear from the red" I lovce these guys and I can't wait for them to come back to TX!! Next it was time for the Deftones!!! Chino came out and all of the girls around me went crazy and screamed in my ear!! Me, Ross and Misty were on the front rail and the security guard(Brad) came and pulled Misty off the rail and put her beside the stage right next to Chino's feet!!! Ross and I stayed infront the whole show.(pics coming soon) Minerva was the opener and then Bloody Cape. During digital bath Chino's guitar was'nt tuned right and he threw it behind his back and sang basically all of digital bath with no guitar! It still sounded fuckin awesome!!! Chino talked to the crowd little and he was telling everyone about how last time they were in Austin that a huge possum almost ate Abe in the back of the Music Hall. Then he borrowed someones cell phone to call his mom, but all he got was the answering machine.....thenm they ripped into lotion. The highlight of my night was when they played the Chaffuer...it sounded great and Chino sang it perfectly! A great show other then it being pretty chilly outside, which isn't very cool when you're waiting outside for an hour and a half. Denali opened the show at 7:35 and were pretty good for the type of the music they were playing, but didn't do much to get the crowd going. It was nice to see a female vocalist though. Poison the Well played 2nd at 8:15 and put on one hell of a show, much better then their show at Take Action Tour. The only problem was that they didn't play Nerdy and only played one song off "Opposite of December". Deftones came on at about 9:35, playing a really good set even though at times the songs weren't played perfectly. They screwed up a part of Bored, but still they were amazing live. Chino was sober, thank god, and scream/sang really well. Chino even came in the crowd to sing "Lotion" and Hexagram". I would have loved to see a few more songs off "Adrenaline", but none the less a good show by the Deftones. Towards the end of the set some dude threw a bloody towel on stage that had a phone number and Chino contemplated calling it, but instead called his mom. Right before they played Headup, Chino mentioned Birthmark was on the setlist (one of my fav. Deftones songs that is never played live), but they never actually played it. A great show. heres the setlists of the deftones (in order) along w/ poison the well's. Poison the Well setlist -Zombies Are Good for Your Health -Parks and What they Meant to Me -The Realist -Botchla -For a Bandaged Iris -Apathy is a Cold Body -Artists Rendering of Me -Ghostchant Deftones setlist -Minerva -Bloody Cape -My Own Summer (Shove It) -Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) -Boy's Republic -Bored -Digital Bath -Knife Party -Mascara -Around the Fur -Lotion -Chauffer (Duran Duran cover) -Feiticeria -Hexagram -Headup Encore: Change (in the House of Flies) Tyler Richardson ----------------------------------------------------------------- So Denali comes on about 7:30, very Team Sleep-ish I think, good stuff, nice beats but I couldn't wait for Poison The Well to come on. They come on at around 8:30 or so: set-list as follows: Zombies, Parks And What You Meant, Realist, Botchla, Apathy, Bandaged Iris, Sticks and Stones, and ending with GhostChant. 2nd time to see em and they rocked that bitch! I woulda liked to hear Pleasant Bullet or Crystal Lake... anyway...on to the 'tones. They come on about 9:25 with the Minerva Intro, Chino in the same shit as usual, Right into Bloody Cape which was sweet as I expected, My Own Summer hits and that's when everybody starts pushin. Short break as he says thank you's for comin out. Into BQAD, then Damone which, you could tell alot of people weren't familiar cuz it started to die down, nice to see that one live, Short break into Bored, everyone got crazy again, Digital Bath, Chino's guitar fooks up in the middle of it so he gets pissed and throws it behind him and Steph takes over, after the song Chino threw the mic and kicked over the mic stand haha. Another short break...Chino and Chi jabber about something...i'm right next to the speaker so when they slurr i can barely understand, goes into Knife Party, Someone throws their panties onstage: Chino: "Some chick threw her bloody rag on stage!" "What a bloody..bloody rag" "Her name is Tonya." "She put her number on here, Should I call Her?, Someone got a phone?, I ain't callin that bitch." Then Chi say's somethin bout diseases and then Chino talks about how last year when they were here, Abe almost got killed by a possum in the back. then he said "Gimme that phone...i'ma call my mom and tell her Abe almost got killed by a possum." Goes into Mascara,Chino is messin with his Voice Effects the whole time, it sounded hot, Then ATF kicks in and everyone went fookin nuts, Lotion...oh my god i been waitin forever to see this live...Chino was at the gate in the middle of the crowd GOIN OFF! Chauffer goes... not bad at all, a little slow for my deftones taste but..eh...then, Feiticeira hits and I start bouncin, its one of my favorites from WP, anyway Hexagram starts, but Stephs guitar goes in and out at the beginning but once it goes straight, the band gets rowdy and Chino is in the crowd, as it goes wild ha. Short break then Headup, Chi puts his mike in the special "deftones" pit area. Steph does a little Interlude and They Finish it off with Change. All in all, good stuff, i would have loved to see WGTB or Needles & Pins or even Mx but i ain't complaining. Next time come to san antonio. And for all the People who are reading this for just the Set-List in the right order...here you go: 01. Minerva 02. Bloody Cape 03. My Own Summer 04. Be Quiet And Drive 05. Damone 06. Bored 07. Change zerosleep_x@yahoo.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was so pumped about finally being able to go see Deftones in concert. Denali's singer had a wonderful voice. I enjoyed them for the first song. After that it all just kinda sounded the same and really dull. I used them as an oppurtinity to get water. Poison the Well was a good band. They really did the trick for getting the crowd pumped up for the Deftones. The pits started out crazy and only got worse, too many people punching and I had to get out of it. Deftones came on and the crowd went nuts. The entire crowd was moving back and forth and it became difficult to even keep in the same spot. So many people were going crowd surfing that along with everyone moving, people were getting thrown on top of people. There were even a couple of 3 body pile ups. All sorts of hats and shirts were being thrown up onto the stage. Someone even threw a bloody rag that said, "Call Tonya" and had a number. Chino attempted to read the number then asked for flashlights on the rag and for someone's cell phone. He couldn't quite make out the number so he tried to call his mom, he got the answering machine. They played some great songs, but I wish that they would have played Roots. They even played Mascara and Around the Fur back to back like it sounds on the album. I couldn't believe it when I heard them playing Damone. Those of you not familiar, fast forward Mx to around 30 mins, it is somewhere around there. I really liked that Chino got into it all and still showed a great deal of appreciation to the fans. That is one thing I respect about this band. All in all it was the best show I have been to. I really hope they come to Austin more. The last concert i saw was very dissapointing. Chino was sick or something and they sounded off. Stiil after that bad experience The DEFTONES still remained my favorite band. We finally arrived in Austin from San Antonio in a lil over a hour, just 15 minutes before the greatest band in the world went on stage. The house lights go out and the TONES are on stage playing the intro to Minerva. And the the crowd just went WILD!! I was impressed on how insink the whole band was that night. I also loved the fact that they played Mascara from ATF and The Chueffer, that was a smoke break for everyone when they played those songs. But when they played songs like hexagram, Head-up, bloody cape, Feiticeira, the crowd was in a frenzy. The only complaint on the show if i could have any is the TONES not playing root or sevenwords, other than that the show was the best i have seen all year!! NEXT time i hope they go to san antonio and austin i'll see them both times!! mindtripstillnumb@hotmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------ First off this was my 5th Deftones concert, but my previous experiences were in Houston. I missed the Houston concert so I could spend the night with my girlfriend, and man don't I wish Deftones came on the 6th. Don't get me wrong, the concert was hardcore, but Chino seems to be more connected to the Houstonian crowd. Anyway, Denali sucked, and Posion the Well put on a tight show. And the Deftones lit it up! They started with "Minerva" and then "Bloody Cape" (one of my favorite from the new cd). Then the tradition, and totally rocking, "My Own Summer" and "Be Quiet And Drive" filled the concert hall. Then came a song I had never heard live..."Damone." I was confused to what song he was playing at first, and why I knew the words. I didn't find out the name of the song until I was listening to the cd in my car on the way back home (Houston). Then they played "Bored" and some other songs I have only heard live on the DVD..."Digital Bath" and "Knife Party." Chino got pissed during Digital Bath because his guitar kept cutting out, so he threw his guitar aside and focused entirely on the singing. "Mascara" and "Around The Fur" followed, and then the Deftones played my favorite song, "Lotion." The crowd went nuts and nearly knocked my back out of alignment. "The Chauffer" followed to cool things down, and then the Deftones followed up with "Feiticeira" and another great new hit, "Hexagram." They ended with one of their usual encores, "Headup." Then, the only disappointment of the night came when the Deftones failed to sing "Engine No. 9" (mixed with "Wicked") and "7 Words." They came out with an encore with "Change." All in all, the concert was awesome, but they failed to sing two of their greatest live songs. I anticipate the next time the greatest band of all time comes back to Houston. nate1105@hotmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------- What the fuck! This show was the shit. I know we couldnt hear a whole hell of a lot of adrenaline but....how can you be dissapointed at a deftones show. Denali gets props for not sounding like complete and utter bullshit. Poison the well gets mad props for getting the crowd fucking pumped to the max. Deftones get all the props for blowin the fuckin roof off. Minerva was awesome w/ the relay straight into bloody cape..nice...shove it and bqad came through nicely...the crowd was feelin it... DAMONE!....how many times have you heard it live? ya..thats what i thought...you could tell people weren't too familiar with this song...yet this is one of the best deftones songs ever...stef messed up on bored and chino was like...man you never mess up, you must have smoked some good shit here in austin...during digital bath chinos guitar kept fucking up so he flipped off his guitar tech and threw his guitar back towards abes set and kept going...atf the was the highlight of the night...th! e chauffe -dustin dont fuck with the DEFTONES tburleson@stx.rr.com ----------------------------------------------------- there is nothing as impressive as seeing a buildling full of deftones fans. i drove 3 hours and got 4 hours of sleep the night of the show cuz of damn highschool. i got to the venue about 8:15 or so and didn't realize that denali had already finished playing. i watched poison the well which was fun and hardcore and is certainly great adrenaline preparation for what was to follow. i started making my way forward after poison the well but still had no clue which band was next. the "elevator" music played inbetween the sets was totally hilarious. prince, abba, justin timberlake all sorts of crazy shit. all the guys were just standing there looking slightly amuzed/annoyed but for some reason a lot of the girls couldn't control them selves and all started dancing. the roadies started setting up and i got on my tiptoes and looked at the bass drum. i saw the artwork from inside the self titled album; the one of the mummified deers. i totally freaked out and tried to get a lil bit closer. it was my first deftones show despite them being my favorite band since i was 14. As soon as they came on stage there was a mad rush forward. they opened with minerva as i believe they do every show. the was directly followed by my own summer which got the crowd so pumped. i used the pit that formed right in front of me to get closer. i can say that my first pit experience was to the deftones. after being in the pit for a minute or so i broke loose through the crowd and got a lot closer. during digital bath chino got pissed because the sound guys were doing him injustice and he just through off his guitar and grabbed the mic. its when you see the guys live that you realize how much heart they put into it. the guys talked to the crowd a few times throughout the show and let us experience their senses of humor. chi got caught singing crappy versions prince songs, chino used someones cell phone from the crowd to call his mom, and stef explained how high he was. it was truly amazing to see how these guys make their music. chino uses his microphone like an instrument in itself. the crowd loved him. i have never seen such a variety of people at a show. for some people deftones is their soft style. for others it's as hardcore as they get. for others it's middle of the road. there were people with mohawks there. guys with abercrombie and fitch shirts with their girlfriends. there was a billion chino look alikes (long straight black hair, sideburns, and goatee). you could see the love the people had for the guys. their talent, their vision, their passion was transferred to everyone in the crowd. there is no experience like a deftones show. i can't wait till they return to the lone star state.
