CALIFORNIAN quintet The Deftones don't conform to the nu metal stereotype.
Their experimental spirit has earned them a Grammy and kept them at arm's
length from the empty posturing of Limp Bizkit and Korn.
While The Deftones have a reputation for either spectacular or lukewarm
live performances, last night's set blew both hot and cold.
Singer Chino Moreno was captivating when he ditched his guitar -
hyperactively tearing around the stage, convulsing on the ground and
diving into the front rows.
And refreshingly he avoided the usual rock machismo by complaining that
his make-up was running.
At other times, though, they remained motionless with their gazes fixed
on the ground and a cliched Iron Maiden-style skull backdrop behind them.
They covered all four of their records evenly rather than concentrating
on their recent self-titled release, which hit the top 10 in the album chart.
But the band - 15 years together - also incorporated the Gorillaz hit,
Clint Eastwood, into debut album highlight Bored and later briefly attempted
The White Stripes' Seven Nation Army.
The wall of chugging guitars and grunted vocals started to grate after
90 minutes, but there was some hidden subtlety among the screaming and
swearing.
Indeed, Moreno's soaring vocal indignation occasionally matched Thom Yorke's
and the tag as the metal Radiohead made sense.
