www.deftonesworld.com Deftones live at: "Club Xcape", El Paso TX 10/06/2004 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEST SHOW EVA!!! This was my 1st time seeing them live and i can honestly say this was the best show ive ever seen! Got to the venue a little late, some time during Dredge's performance. The crowd was alive the entire set and Deftones rocked every minute they played. Songs of the night for me were ' Knife Party' and 'se7en Words'. The Cure cover was also sweet. Cant wait for the new album to drop and the tour that follows in ' 05. Hope these guys come back soon! set-list in somewhat order: Hexagram Feiticeira Change MOS (shove it) E#9 Damone Cant Even Breath BQ&D Lotion Nosebleed *CURE Cover* Knife Party 7Words Minus Blindfold (break) Minerva Bloody Cape ----- the lens from my glasses popped out during this song but its all good i fixed them. ~Monty --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I had seen the Deftones live 3 times prior to this event, and needless to say was excited and even got a hard on when I heard the good news that the Deftones would be playing a club show here. Every Deftones show I have been to I have never been let down and this night would certainly be no exception. The show is slated for an 8pm start time, so we show up around 7:45 and notice a long stagnating line going all the way around the block. With the line looking as if its not moving too much, we decide to find a decent parking spot and engage in one of my favorite pre-concert rituals. So after a few tokes a pair of red eyes and a couple cashed bowls later we head off towards the club. The line was still long but moving relatively quick and we were able to get mushed into the club in only 20 or so minutes. The club was packed with people from end to end and hot as fuck. I first made my way to the bar for a few drinks to help pass the time and get my mind off the heat and big sweaty dudes squeezing and rubbing their way past me to get where they're going. The wait for the first band to come out took a little while. After the long, hot, sweaty wait the opening band Dredg finally took the stage. I had earlier read a couple sub-par reviews of this band so wasn't expecting much. And they definitely lived up to their reviews. As they came out and performed song after song filled with rather boring vocal melodies, uninspired guitars, really nothing special. I pretty much found it to be a bunch of mellow kick back music, I personally wouldn't spend any money to pick up one of their albums. But Dredg set did allow me to hang out by the bar and have a few more drinks before the Deftones were to come out. It wasn't till around 10:20 (thats just a guess since i wasnt wearing a watch) when the Deftones hit the stage. The setlist is very similar to the ones posted on this website from the couple of previous shows from this tour. As soon as the club lights went off, the crowd lets out their collective screams filling the room with a deafening pitch. The band files onto the stage one after the other, all taking their place behind their respective instruments, Chino takes to the middle of the stage picks up his mic raises both arms over his head and the band goes right into one of the sickest most relentless sets I have ever been privileged to witness. As soon as they open with Hexagram the place goes fuckin nuts, the pit breaks out, heads banging, and everyone swaying and singing along. The entire time the Deftones were on stage you could feel the positive energy and genuine love from every true Deftones fan in that club, which helped to propel the Deftones set to a whole other dimension, just a few steps shy of heaven. Every song kept u on your toes and yelling for more. From the heavy break your neck in the air riffs supplied by Stef, to one of the tightest rhythm sections in rock and roll-Abe and Chi. To see and hear Chi play and bang the fuck out of all his Fender basses is a thing of beauty. And I have always loved what Frank has to bring to the table, an ambient layer on top of an already kick ass band that helps catapult their songs to new heights. And of course Chino and his vocals ranging from sweet sounding melodies to angry growling screams and great stage presence that he has always had. Just a few songs that stick out as I write this are, Engine No. 9 with the Wicked rap thrown in was fuckin sick. And singing along to Be Quiet and Drive, and Digital Bath was fuckin great. After the encore break, they finish off the set with Minerva and Bloody Cape, as soon as Chino hit the opening chord for Minerva it set the crowd off to a fever pitch, the band layed it all down and the crowd was more than willing to sing along to this instant-classic of a song. If you're a fan of the Deftones and this club tour isn't coming your way, do yourself a favor and grab a plane ticket, hitch a ride or do whatever you have to, to check out this tour. El Paso, TX and the surrounding areas, is a dirty, forgotten southwest corner of this country, but the Deftones have managed to grace us with their live music time after time. With every new album they have put out they have always made time to bring their live show to us and I love you guys for that. So I sit here with my ears still ringing, memories still fond and eagerly anticipating the new Deftones album and future tours. stoned_nm@yahoo.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
